(No Model.)
' J. W. BUCHANAN.
WIRE FENCE.
Patented May 15, 1894.
J. I Q
'5 5 [WE/V] 022 l as shown.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN W. BUCHANAN, OF SMITHVILLE, OHIO.
WIRE FENCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 519,759, dated May 15, 1894.
Application filed September 27,1893. Serial No.486,57'7. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J OHN W. BUCHANAN, a c1t1 zen of the United States, and a resident of Smlthville, county of Wayne, State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wire Fences, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in wlre fences, the object of which is to provide an improved means for spacing and securing the fence wires at desired distance apart and to secure said wires in the kerfs or spacing notches provided in the spacing strip, by a a special wire provided therefor.
With this object in view, my invention relates to certain features of construction and combination of parts as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
Figure 1,of the accompanying drawings is a View in perspective of a wire fence illustrating my invention, and Fig. 2, is a similar view of the spacing strip showing kerfs or notches in the edges thereof, a fragment of fence wire in the kerfs and the wire, whereby the fence wire is secured.
Referring to Fig. 2, A represents the spacing strip, having formed in the edges thereof kerfs a in which the fence wires B are placed To secure the wire B in the kerfs, a binding wire 0 is provided, and for the purposes of this application, as seen, is secured to the lower fence wire B, as shown at b, and is then passed back and about the strip A, to and about the same wire B, binding the fence wire in the kerf a, thence up and over to the outside of the next wire above as shown by the dotted lines, that represent the position of the wire C on the opposite side of the strip A, thence back and about the strip and forward and about the outside of the fence wire as shown at m and thence up to the next wire, where the operation is repeated and so on, to the top wire, of the fence, about which the end of the binding wire 0 is wound as shown at 6. It will be noticed that the binding wire 0 can be quickly put on or taken oif, that when on, it will secure the fence wires in the kerfs, and yet allow the fence wire to be slacked or tightened while in position to make allowance for expansion and contraction.
Having thus fully described the object and the nature of my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination with a wire fence of a spacing strip, having at its side portions a series of kerfs to receive the fence wires B and a continuous binding wire 0, adapted to secure a series of fence wires in said kerfs, in vertical order by binding the wire 0, about the lower fence wire, at one side of the strip, then about the strip and the fence wire on the opposite side, thence up to the front or outside of the next fence wire above and over and back and about the strip to the front side of the fence wire, thence up to and repeating the operation to secure all the intermediate fence wires in the kerfs, then bending the wire 0 about the top fence wire at one side of the strip, then about the strip and finally about the fence wire on the other side, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 19th day of September, A. D.
JOHN W. BUCHANAN. Witnesses:
