To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE M. WRIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Worcester, in the county of Worcester and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in clamps arranged to connect the vertical stay wires in a wire fence with the horizontal strand wires, and the object of my invention is to provide a rigid form of clamp which may be separately attached to the fence, connecting the joint between the stay and strand wires and which is designed to prevent the slightest movement of either wire at the joint. I attain this object by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a joint between a stay and strand wire, showing my improved clamp in use. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the blank from which my clamp is made. Fig. 3 is a plan view of my clamp before its attachment to the fence. Fig. 4 is a top view and Fig. 5 is an edge view of the same. Fig. 6 is a front view of the clamp attached to the fence, and Fig. 7 is a top view of the same.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts in the different views.
The clamp is formed from a blank 1 and comprises a central division 2, which is preferably grooved to fit the vertical stay wire 3 and side divisions 4 and 5 formed by slitting the blank on the broken lines 6 and 7, which extend downward approximately one half the length of the blank. The side divisions 4 and 5 are arranged to be turned downward in loops 8 and 9 to inclose the horizontal strand wire 10 as it crosses the stay wire 8 and to clasp it tightly. The lower portion of the blank is cut away at the sides at 11 and 12, as shown in Figs.
2 and 3, making the lower end 13 of the blank correspond in shape with the central section 2 of the upper end. The outer corners of the loops 8 and 9 are rounded at 14 and 15 to correspond with the rounded corners 16 and 17 of the blank when the loops are turned over to inclose the strand wire.
The oblique cuts 6 and 7 in the blank are nearest together at the upper end of the blank and gradually slant outward as they extend downward in the blank. As a result, the inner edges of the loops 8 and 9 when turned over are nearer together at the corners 18 and 19, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, where they are arranged to contact with the vertical stay wire 3 of the fence, and this distance is arranged to be approximately equal to the diameter of the stay wire 3, so that when the loops 8 and 9 are turned over to inclose the strand wire 10, the corners 1S and 19 will contact with the sides of the stay wire 3 and hold it securely from all sidewise movement, as shown in Fig. 6. The oblique cuts 6 and 7 gradually separate as they extend downward in the blank,
thereby affording a wider space between the upper ends of the loops, giving room for forming'the bend 20 in the strand wire 10 where it crosses the stay wire 3, as shown in Fig. 7.
I claim,
A clamp, arranged to hold wires crossing at right angles, having a central longitu dinal division to engage one of said wires and loops for embracing the other of said wires at right angles to said first wire, said loops having oblique inner edges with the inner corners arranged to contact with the sides of the wire lying between them.
