STAY FOR WIRE FENCES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 615,401, dated December 6, 1898.

Be it known that I, ANDREW J. MUNGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Antwerp, in the county of Paulding and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stays for Wire Fences, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a stay for wire fences, and has for its object to 'provide an inexpensive staywire toconnect the running Wires at intervals along the length of the same to hold them in a parallel relation.
The invention consists in a stay-wire comprising a strand provided with a series of twin loops and a connecting-strand and Vrunning wires formed of two strands twisted together and embracing the strand of the stay-Wire between the loops.
The invention further consists in the parts shown in the'drawings, described in the speciication, and more particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure l is a front elevation of asection of fence, the stays thereof embodying the essential features of my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective View of a portion of the running wire and of the stay in engagement therewith. Fig. V is a front elevation of one side of a portion of the stay. Fig. 4 is a like View of the reverse side, and Fig. 5 is an edge View of the same.
In carrying out my invention I secure to the posts 1 the running wires 2, which comprise two strands of wire twisted upon each other, as shown. The stay-wires 3 connect the running wires at intervals between the posts to secure them in a parallel position, and the means for securing the stay-wires to the running wires constitutes the essential feature of my invention.
The stay-Wires are prepared as an article of manufacture and comprise a wire strand provided with twin loops 4 and 5, forming a connecting-strand 6, two of the loops and connecting-strand forming a connection for one of the running wires, there being as many pairs of loops and connecting-strands as there are to be running wires in the fence.
The running wires comprise two strands twisted together during the manufacture of the fence, the wires embracing the stay-wire between the loops 4 and 5 and when twisted form a loop 7 to embrace the strand 6 between the loops, and thus confine the running wire between the loops, whereby vertical movement of one running wire is prevented and the running wires are held in a parallel relation.
The stay-wires are preferably formed of a heavier gage of wire than the running wires and have a longitudinal rigidity. Consequently the loops are fixed and not liable to be bent when ordinary pressure is placed upon a running wire.
In a wire fence, the combination of a staywire formed with twin loops arranged in alinement with the length of the stay-wire twisted in reverse directions with a connecting-strand, and running wires formed of two strands of wire twisted together and embracing the oonneoting-strand of the stay between the loops, substantially as described.
