Description

Patented June 20, 1916.
W1 TNESSES:
Attorney ALOIS TEGELER, OF NASHUA, IO'W A.
METALLIC FENCE-POST.
Application filed July 27, 1915.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, Anne Tronnun, citizen of the United States, residing at Nashua, in the county of Chickasaw and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Metallic Fence-Post, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in metallic fence posts.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of fence posts and to provide a simple and inexpensive fence post of strong and durable construction.
A further object is in the provision of means, struck or stamped from a side of the post, for forming tongues arranged in a manner to permit the locking rod to be inserted between said tongues for fastening the rod against lateral movement, whereby the wire fence will be-maintained between the post and the locking rod.
The invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, material and minor details of construction, within the scope of the appended claims, may be made without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of the invention. Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation. with a portion of the post broken away to show the manner of arranging the tongues and the manner of fastening the wire fencing to the post. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. lis a horizontal sectional view on the line ii-*4: of Fig. 1, and Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view.
A represents a. vertical fence post which is disclosed as being made in the form of a triangle in cross-section, although a post constructed in other shapes will serve the same purpose, as the post might be constructed in a T-shape, or in the form of angle iron, or a channel bar.
The post herein shown is composed of three sides, 1, 2 and 3, and is preferably made of a single piece of material. The front side 1 is provided with a flange 4, which extends over the terminal of the side 3 and rests against the outer surface of the Specification of Letters Patent.

side 3, for maintaining the three sides in their triangular relation.
Struck or stamped from the metal of the post, and preferably from the front side 1, are a plurality of tongues 5. These tongues are preferably made L-shaped and are intended to lie in a horizontal plane. There are two rows of tongues forming right and left hand tongues or hooks. Each tongue is provided with a hooked or flanged portion (3, the inner face of which is preferably straight. The tongues are bent downwardly and outwardly at the bottom of the cut formed in the post and when the tongues are bent, preferably at right angles to the post, each tongue will form a support for the horizontal strand or wire fencing 7.
While I have shown the invention composed of a plurality of horizontal strands, other forms of fencing may be fastened to the post. After the horizontal strands have been applied to the posts and are supported by the tongues 5, a locking rod or wire 8 is inserted between the two rows of tongues, the rod being moved downwardly between the tongues and coming in contact with the straight or inner surfaces of the hooked or flanged portion ('3, the strands of the fencing 7 being interposed between the side 1 of the post and the rod 8. The tongues are arranged alternately, so that there is first a right hand tongue and then a left hand tongue, and so on throughout the length of the post, as is clearly indicated in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings. It will be seen that the tongues are in overlapping relation. The space formed between the tongues of the two rows is sufficient to permit of the vertical sliding movement of the locking rod 8, the hook portions 6 prevent the locking rod from being forced outwardly, and the body of the tongues prevent any lateral movement of the locking rod.
The upper terminal of the locking rod 8 is bent downwardly and then laterally, as at 9. The downwardly extending portion may rest along the inner surface of the side 1, and the lateral projection 9 extends through the opening 10 formed in the post in the formation of the uppermost tongue 5, thereby locking the rod against withdrawal, the lateral projection 9 being drawn through the opening 10 when the locking rod 8 is in engagement with the strands of the wire fencing.
' F rom the foregoing itfwill be seenthat I have provided a very simple means for fastening wire fencing to posts which can passageway between the alternately arranged right and left hand tongues, permits of the locking rod being easily and quickly removed and applied, and the tongues are not weakened by forming holes therethrough, through which the rods must pass for fastening the fencingto the posts.
What is claimedis,
1. A fence post comprising a plurality of tongues stamped from the body of the'post, said tongues being L-shaped and bent out- Wardly and lying in a horizontal plane and forming a support for, the horizontal strands of wire fencing, inwardly turned hooks formedat the terminals of the tongues, the hookof each alternate tongue projecting in 'an opposite direction, to the preceding hook and arranged 1n 'overlapplng relation, and
a vertical locking rod inserted between said tongues and engaged by the hooks for maintaining the 'rod in position.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for fence post comprising a plurality of alternately arranged right and left hand tongues stamped from the body of the post, said tongues being L-shaped and bent down wardly in a horizontal plane for forming supports for the horizontal strands of wire fence, hooks formed at the outer teri'ninals of the tongues, the hooks of the left hand tongues extending over the right hand tongues, and the hooks of the right hand tongues extending over the left hand tongues, a vertical locking rod having sliding engagement between said right and left hand tongues for confining the wire fencing to the posts, said locking rod being provided at the upper end with a lateral projection adapted to extend through an opening, made in the formation of one of the tongues, for
locking the rod against vertical movement after the wire fencing has been applied to the post.
I11 testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
