Description

O. PED-E RS ON. Barbed Pence-Wire.
No. 205,501. PatentedJuly 2, 1878..
WITNEESEE INVENTDTB Wm. I fizz fZMfi v /w N. PETERS, PHOYOALITHUGRAPHER, WASHINGTON. D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
OLE PEDERSON, OF J OLIET, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN BARBED FENCE-WIRES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 205,501, dated July 2, 1878; application filed April 25, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLE PEDERsoN, of J oliet, in the county of Will and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barbs for Wire Fences; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this speeifica tion, in which Figure represents a piece of twisted fencewire with a barb or spur embodying my invention attached thereto. Fig. 2 represents an end view of the barb or spur detached from the wire.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts.
My invention relates to that class of barbs or spurs used upon the rails of a wire fence, said rails being composed of two wires twisted together; and the object of my invention is to simplify the construction of the barb or spur and lessen the cost of manufacture, and also to so form the barb or spur that it can be readily and firmly secured to the twisted wire rail.
To that end my invention consists in a castmetal barb having a series of sharp points projecting in opposite directions, and laterally from the plane of the twisted-wire fence-rail, and having the body of the barb or spur made in proper shape to fit the curve of the single wires when twisted together, and grooved longitudinally to receive the single wires, as hereinafter more fully described.
In the drawing, A represents the fence wire or rail, which is composed of two single wires, rt a, twisted together in the usual manner. D represents the barb or spur, which is made from cast or malleable iron, and is provided with sharp-pointed spurs 0, d, c, and f, projecting in opposite directions and radially from the body of the barb, as shown in Fig. 2. The body of the barb is elongated upon one end, and is so formed as to describe the arc of a circle corresponding with the curve of the single wire, as shown at F, Fig. l, and is provided with grooves formed on opposite sides, and between the points 0 e and d f, to receive the wires a a, respectively, when twisted together.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with the twisted wires a a, of the cast-metal barb D, provided with the pointed spurs 0, d, e, and f,projecting radially therefrom, and having the body of the barb elongated, so that its ends project beyond the outer edges of the spurs, and provided with the longitudinal grooves curved to receive and fit the angle of the twisted wires a a, substantially as shown and described.
OLE PEDERSON. Witnesses:
