Description

No. 798,781. PATENTED SEPT. 5, 1905. J. M. GILMER.
WIRE FENCE TIE.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 12.1905.
JOHN M. GILMER, OF JACKSON, HICHIGAV.
WIRE-FENCE TIE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 5, 1905.
Application filed June 12, 1905. Serial No. 264,821.
To (bi/Z whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, J on) M. Gimme, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Jackson, in the county of Jackson and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ire-Fence Ties; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap. pertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in wire-fence ties, and more particularly to such ties when made of wire; and its object is to more effectually secure the ends of the wire forming the tie, so that the same will not become loosened or detached, to protect the ends of the tie from coming in contact with objects moving in contact with or near the fence, and to provide the device with various new and useful features, hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an enlarged elevation of a device embodying my invention; Fig. 2, the same, showing the side opposite to Fig. 1; and Fig. 8, an elevation at right angles to Fig. 2.
Like numbers refer to like parts in all of the figures.
1 and 2 represent, respectively, the horizontal and vertical wires of a wire fence. 3 represents the tie applied to these wires at the crossing of the same to secure them in fixed relations to each other, which tie consists of a piece of wire bent in substantially circular form and engaging the crossed wires at opposite sides of the same and binding the same firmly against each other. The middle portion of the tie engages one side of the wire 1, and its side portions engage the opposite side of the wire 2 at each side of the crossing of the said wires 1 and 2, and near the ends of the tie it engages the wire 1 and crosses the same side by side.
The ends of the tie are thence twisted partially around itself in opposite directions, whereby the ends are securely fastened in place and brought within the plane of the crossed wires, and thus present no projecting ends liable toengage with anything moving along near to or in contact with the fence. hen the ends of the tie are wound around one of the fence-wires as usually done, the said ends terminate outside the plane of said fence-wires and are liable to engage anything moving in contact with or near the fence.
The essential novelty of this device is in the ar 'angement of the ends of the tie, whereby they are wound partially around the wire forming the tie instead of the fence-wire and brought within the plane of the tie and fencewircs, and thus more securely held and also protected from contact with anything moving near or in contact with the fence.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A wire-fence tie consisting of a portion of wire bentin substantially circular form and engaging the fence-wires near the crossing of the same and at the sides of the said wires opposite the sides thereof which contact each other, said tie also having its ends bent around itself and terminating within the plane of the fence-wires.
2. In combination with the crossed wires of a fence, a wire-fence tie consisting of a portion of wire bent in a closed circuit and having its ends wound partially around itself in opposite directions and terminating in the plane of the said fence-wires.
in testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN M. GILMER.
