UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE H. PATTISON, OF FREEPOR'I, ILLINOIS.
FENCE-BARB.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent-No. 323,724, dated August 4:, 1.885.
appl'cation tiled September ll, 18*). (X0 model.)
T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. PATTISON, a resident of Freeport. in the county of Slephenson and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence- Barbs; and ldo hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
My invention is an improvement in fencebarbs of that class that are attached to a single wire, the wire so barbed being either used by itself as a single-strand fence or intertwisted with a plain wire to form a two-st rand cable. It is shown in a two strand cable in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is an elevation of the barb and cable, one of the strands, B, of the cable being cut away where it crosses the barb, and the position of the part so cut away being shown by dotted lines; and Figs. 2 and 3 are views of the barb from the ends 00 and y of the cable, respectively. .In Figs. 2 and 3 the strands of the cable are shown in section.
The barb is of a single wire pointed at both ends, the body of the bath lying in contact with and practically parallel to the main wire to which it is attached, one of the ends of the barb being bent at right angles to the body, and the other end being bent at right angles to the body and wrapped about the same and about the main wire.
In the drawings, DE is the body of the barb, lying parallel or nearly parallel to the main wire A. The end 0 is bent at right angles to the body at the point D, while the end G is bent at right angles to the body at the point E and wrapped aboutthe body and main wire, bind ing them together. The two points project in opposite directions and are practically parallel. By wrapping one end of the barb back upon the body the two points are brought more nearly opposite than where they are separated by the entire extent of the wrap on the main wire, and at the same time one of the points, 0, is firmly locked, so that it cannot be unwrapped from the main wire-a result which is not obtained in any barb which is wrapped about the main wire alone and not about any part of its own length.
It is evident that instead of the entire wrap being made from one end of the body of the barb, the body may be at the center of the barbing-wire; and both ends may be wrapped about it until they meet at the center.
The drawings show a two-strand cable; but it is plain that the strand B may be dispensed with and a single strand be used for a fence.
I am aware that a two-point barb formed of a single wire whose middle portion is wrapped about the main wire of a fence-cable is in common use, and has been patented, and I do not therefore lay claim to that invention; but,
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
The combination of a fence-wire and a twopoint wire-barb whose body lies in contact with and practically parallel to the fence-wire, one end of the barb projecting at right angles to its body, and the other end bent at right angles to the body and wrapped about the main wire and the body of the barb, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEO. H. PATTISON.
