Description

No. 861,855. PATENYTED JULY 30, 1907.
' F. L. IRWIN.
SIDE STAKE FOR CARS. APPLIOATION FILED MAY 26. 1907.
I l/orney THE NORRIS PETERS c0. WASHINGTON, n. c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK L. IRWIN, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE RALSTON STEEL OAR COMPANY, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 30, 1907.
Application filed May 28, 1907. Serial No. 376.073.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK L. IRWIN, a resident of Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Side Stakes for Cars; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in railway cars and more particularly to the side stakes to Which the side boarding, or steel side of a car is secured,- the object of the invention being to provide a side stake which can be cheaply manufactured, which will occupy very little space, and which will have adequate strength for the purpose for which it is intended.
With this object in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
The accompanying drawing is a perspective view illustrating my improved side stake and its attachment to the side sill of a car.
1 represents a channel side sill; 2 a portion of one of the cross-bearers of the car underframe secured at its ends to the side sill by means of an angle bracket 3, and 4 illustrates my improved side stake. The side stake 4 comprises a steel body portion 5 having a bend centrally between its side edges to form a central longitudinal corrugation 6 which extends from end to end of the stake and assists in insuring the rigidity of the stake. The body portion 5 of the stake is off-set to a point a comparatively short distance from the upper end of the same, as shown at 7, for the accommodation of a reinforcing member 8, the construction of which is identical with that of the body portion 5. The reinforcing member 8 lies against the body portion 5-with its corrugation 9 disposed within the corrugation 6 of the body portion and the two members of the stake may be riveted together or they may be secured together by means of the same bolts which serve as fastenin gs for the side boarding of the car. By off-setting the body portion 5 of the stake and disposing the reinforcing member 8 in this off-set portion the inner faces of the two members of the device will be brought into alinement with each other at the inner side of the stake Where the side boarding of the car is located.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is,
1. A side stake for a car Comprising two parallel longitudinally corrugated members, each provided at respective' sides of the corrugated central portion with holes for the passage of bolts to secure the side of a car thereto.
2. A side stake for a car comprising a body portion having a central longitudinal, outwardly projecting cor rugation, and a reinforcing member having a similar cor rugation lying within the corrugation of the body portion, said reinforcing member terminating below the upper end of the body portion.
A side stake for a car comprising a body portion having a central longitudinal, outwardly projecting corrugation, said body portion off-set from a point below its upper end to the lower end of said body po1'tion,'and a reinforcing member disposed in the off-set portion of the body portion and having a corrugation disposed within the corrugation of the body portion, whereby the inner face of the body portion above the reinforcing member will aline with the inner face of said reinforcing member.
Intestimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRANK L. IRWIN.
