To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, SETH A. CRONE, a citi- 'zen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in End Sills'for Cars, of which the following is a specitication.
The invention relates to improvements in railway-cars, and pertains moreparticularly to a novel construction for the end sillsof such cars, the purpose of the invention being to provide a trussed end sill offspecial construction which may be used conveniently. and advantageously and without interference with the necessary parts carried at the ends of cars. Y
My invention comprises, among other features, an end sill having a beam` or plate extending from side to side of the car at the end of the latter and comprising in one integral piece a truss member extending downwardly on converging lines toward the center of the car and to a suitable extent to permit of an adequate space being formed between the sill proper andthe upper edge of the truss member to receive the body of the usual. coupler. The beam or plate for the end sill will be an ordinary rolledi beam or merchant-plate slit in line with itslength except at its end portions and the .metal at one side of the said slit being bent downward to form the integral truss member.

Referring to Figs. 1, 2, and 3, 10'designates the end sill for a car, said sill being in one integral piece and formed from a rolled channel-beam of commercial shape slit along the `of the draw-sills 16 16.
Fig. 4 is an elevation of av line 11 to form the horizontal member 12 and truss member 13, the latter being bent down- Wardly on converging lines, as shown in Fig. 1, to constitute a truss of substantial character, the truss member 13 being integral with the member 12by reason of the fact that the slit along the line 11 does not extend through the end portions of the beam. The end sill shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3 is thus in one integral piece and made from a rolled channelbeam, whose upper and; lower iianges 14 15 receive between them at the oppositeY sides of the longitudinal center of the car the ends Between the central portion of the upper. and lower flanges 14 15 of the end sill and between the parallel drawsills 16 are provided the filling-pieces 17 1S 19, the piece 17 being in the form of a hollow casting fitting below the upper flange 14 and extending downwardly to the lower edge of the upper member 12 of the end sill and the fillingpiece 19 being in the form of a hollow casting fitting above the iiange 15 and extending upwardly to the upper edge of the truss member 13 of the end sill, while the lling-piece 18 is also in the form of a hollow casting of general rectangular outline fitting between the upper and lower members 12 13 and upper and lower llingpieces. 17 19, said fillingpiece 18 having an opening 2O for the passage of the body of the usual coupler. The fillingpieces 17 and 19 are securedby being riveted to the end sill and draw-sills, and the fillingpiece 18 is detachably secured, by means of the bolts 21, to the draw-sills 16. The purpose of detachably securing the filling-piece 18 is to enable it to belreversed in position or turned upside down between the sill members 12 13, so that'when desiredthe 'opening 2O in said filling-'piece 18 may be brought directly below the upper member 12 instead of, as shown in Fig. 1, directly above' the lower member 13, this reversibilityfof the fillingpiece 18 being desirable, so as to adapt the opening 2O1thereinto the position of the coupler., For a car built low it would be necessary that .the filling-piece 18 be reversed in position, so that the opening 20 may come at the upper edge thereof, where it would be adapted to receive the body of the coupler;
but for very many cars the filling-piece 18 ICO would be given the position shown in Fig. 1, with the opening 2O directly above the truss member 13. The filling- pieces 17,18, and 19 very materially strengthen the central portion of the end sill and form durable structures capable of withstanding the action of the coupler members.
Upon the ends of the end sill are secured buffers 22.
The end sill shown in Fig. 4 is adapted for wooden cars, andthe novelty in the structure disclosed in Fig. 4 consists in slitting the usual wooden end sill and interposing between the sections 25 25 thereof the metal plate in one integral piece comprising the upper horizontal member 26 and truss member 27, the latter being formed by slitting the plate as with respect to the structure of Fig. l and bending downward one section of the plate along the line of said slit to form the truss member 97, the latter affording great strength and durability and there being provided above its upper edge a suitable space fox,` the coupler members. The wooden portions of the sill shown in Figs. 4 and 5 may be recessed, as at 27, to afford additional space for the coupler members, said recess 27 terminating at the lower edge of the upper member 26 and said member 26, together with the truss member 27, affording sufficient strength to the end sill to prevent the formation of the recess 27 from prejudicially weakening the end sill at its central portions.
In each of the constructions shown in the drawings an end sill is presented having as its essential feature a trussed metallic section in one integral piece formed by slitting the beam or plate longitudinally except at its ends and bending downwardly one division of the beam or plate along the line of the slit to form the truss member, the said metallic section being formed from either a commercial rolled beam or a merchant-plate of known construction. The said metallic section materially adds to the strength and longevity of the end sill and adjacent car structure without materially increasing the cost of the latter.
In the process of manufacturing the end sill it may be desirable while bending downwardly the truss member to avoid stretching the metal in said truss member, and this may be readily accomplished by upsetting the upper metallic member of the end sill during and in the proportion to the bending downward of the truss member, this upsetting of the upper member of the end sill being performed by the pressing toward each other in a well-known wayof the ends of the beam or plate during the downward bending of the truss member.
The metallic section of the end sill is arranged on edge, as shown, whether of the flanged rolled beam or merchant-plate construction, and when the end sill is formed from a hanged rolled beam for use in metal cars the lower central portion of the truss member 13 will be horizontal and parallel with the upper member 12, as shown in Fig. 1, so as to afford adequate space for the ends of the draw-sills, the filling-pieces, and the coupler parts.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The end sill for cars comprising in one integral piece the metallic section having the upper horizontal member and the lower truss member, the latter being formed by slitting the beam or plate, except at its end portions, and bending that section of said beam or plate at one side of said slit in a direction therefrom; substantially as set forth.
2. The end sill for cars comprising the hanged rolled beam slit lengthwise through its web, except at its end portions, the section of said beam at one side of said slit being bent to form the truss member 13, while the section at the other side ot said slit constitutes the horizontal member 12; substan# tially as set forth.
3. The end sill for cars comprising in one integral piece the anged rolled beam slit longitudinally, except at its ends, and having one section thereof bent in a direction from said slit to form the truss member, While the other section thereof constitutes the horizontal member, combined with the draw-sills at the opposite sides of the center of said end sill, and a metallic filling secured intermediate the upper and lower flanges of the end sill and the vertical facing sides of the drawsills, said filling having an opening therein for the coupler; substantially as set forth.

The end sill for cars comprising the flanged rolled beam slit lengthwise through its web, except at its end portions, the section of said beam at one side of said slit being bent to form the truss member 13, while the section at the other side of said slit constitutes the horizontal member 12, combined with the draw-sills at opposite sides of the center of said end sill, and a metallic filling secured intermediate the upper and lower flanges of the end sill and the vertical facing sides of the draw-sills, said filling comprising the upper piece 17, the lower piece 19, and the intermediate piece 18, having the opening 20 and secured to said draw-sills; substantially as set forth.
5. The end sill for cars comprising the flanged rolled beam slit lengthwise through its web, except at its end portions, the section of said beam at one side of said slit being bent to form the truss member 13, while the section at the other side of said slit constitutes the horizontal member l2, combined with the draw-sills at opposite sides of the center of said end sill, and a metallic filling secured intermediate the upper and Ylower flanges of the end sill and the vertical sides of the draw-sills, said filling comprising the upper piece 17, the lower piece 19, and the intermediate piece 18, having the opening and detachably secured to said draw-sills and being reversible so that said opening may be ICO IIO
