CORNER IRON OR STRAP FOR CARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 644,017, dated February 20, 1900.
Application filed October 6, 1899.
To all whom it nuty concern.-
Be it known that I, ISAAC L. KISER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Little Rock, in the county of Pulaski and State of Arkansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Corner Irons or Straps for Cars, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to corner irons or straps for cars, the object thereof being to provide a strengthening device of this 'character in which the corner-strap or angle-iron and its attaching or clamping devices are all constructed and arranged in such a manner as to impart increased strength, decrease the cost of production, and give greater durability and solidity to the cars on which-such straps are employed.
To enable others to clearly understand and to successfully practice my said invention, I will now proceed to describe the same in detail, and following said description will particularly point out in the claims the novel features which constitute my invention. For the purposes of said description reference is .had to the accompanying drawings,in which-- Figure 1 is a sectional plan showing a corner-iron constructed in accordance with my invention and applied to a car. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the corner-iron and clamping-rod removed from the car. Fig. 3 is a view of one of the exterior angles of a car, showing my invention. Fig. A is a View showing a modified construction of the corner-iron.
The reference-numeral 1 in said drawings indicates the body of any ordinary car, the corner only being shown, with its post 2 and the side belt-railand end belt- rail 3 and 4, Fig. 1.
My corner-iron consists of an angle-plate or corner-strap 5, of suitable width and length and thick enough to impart the necessary In said strap at corresponding points on opposite sides of the angle are formed openings 6 for the ends of a clampingrod 7, the ends of said rod being threaded to receive nuts 8.
The corner-iron is applied to the outer face of the car at the angles, the ends of the rod 7 being inserted in holes bored in the sills, belt-rails, and top plates of the car. This is readily effected, since the ends of the clampin g-rod are parallel with each other, as shown Serial No. 732,808. (No model.)
in Fig. l. The ends of the clamping-rod project into'recesses 9 in the sills and in the side and end belt-rails, respectively, and receive nuts 8, which are screwed up, and thereby drawn into said recesses, so that there are no sharp projecting points or angles at the interior corners of the car.
When applied at the lowest point on the car, I may make the corner irons or straps 5 wider, as shown in Fig. 3, and in such a case the corner-iron may have two or more clamping-rods to secure it in place.
By constructing a corner-strap in the manner shown I am able to secure a high degree of strength and stiffness without increase of weight. The corner iron or strap has a much more ornamental and graceful appearance when secured in place by the clamping-rod 7, as no bolt-heads appear upon the outer face of the strap. Moreover, the latter is not weakened by the formation of numerous holes for receiving a series of attaching-bolts.
I may construct the corner iron or strap 5 in the manner shown in Fig. 4-that is to say, with an end extended and provided with a crimp 10, formed in it for the end of a truss, a single perforation 12 being made through the crimp.
As shown in Fig. 3, it is preferable to apply the corner irons or straps 5 to the outside of an ordinary car at points corresponding with the location of the car-sills, belt-rails, and top plates; and the holes for passage of the screw-threaded ends of the clamping-rods 7 are extended through the sills, belt-rails, and top plates at an angle of about forty-five degrees, corresponding with the angles formed by the ends of each clamping rod. The clamping-rod 7 is circular in cross-section and is formed with three bends, as shown, the two ends of the rod being parallel and provided with screw-threads for engagement of the nuts 8, that secure the straps 5 and rods 7 in place. The thickness, width, and length of the corner-straps 5 will correspond with the dimensions of the car-sills, belt-rails, and top plates at the points where the cornerstraps are applied. It is preferable to make the strap-openings 6 oblong, as shown in Fig. 4, thereby facilitating application of the clamping-rod 7 and its straining by the nuts 8, so'as to secure the corner-straps firmly.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. A corner iron, or strap, for cars, consisting of an angle-plate having openings in its end portions, in combination with a clamping-rod having parallel screw-threaded ends and provided with the described bends,whereby the said rod is adapted to be applied along the outside of said corner-iron and With the parallel ends of the rod extended through the openings in the corner-iron, and nuts on the screw-threaded ends of said rod,substantially as described.
2. A corner iron, or strap, for cars, consisting of an angle-plate having oblong openings near its ends, in combination with a clamping-rod applied to the outside of said corner-iron and provided with parallel screwthrcaded ends projecting through said openings at an angle of about forty-five degrees, and nuts on the screw-threaded portions of the rod ends, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a corner iron, or strap, for cars, of a clampingrod having bends, as described, and provided with parallel threaded ends to project through openings in said corner-iron, and nuts on the threaded ends of said clamping-rod, substantially as described.
4. The combination with a car, of a corneriron consisting of an angle-plate having openings near its ends, a clamping-rod provided with bends and having parallel screw-threaded ends to project through the openings of said corner-iron and through openings in the sills or belt-rails of the car, and nuts turned onto the screw-threaded ends of said rod and adapted to rest in recesses in the inner faces of the belt-rails and sills of the car, substantially as described.
