UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
MACK ANDREW' LEITER, OF SADORUS, ILLINOIS.
WAGON-BOX CLAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 615,563, dated December 6, 1898.
Application filed May 19, 1898. $erial No. 681,140. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ll/IACK ANDREW LEITER, of Sadorus, in the county of Champaign and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Wagon-Box Clamp, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved wagon-box clamp which is simple and durable in construction and arranged to securely hold the wagon body or box in place on the bolsters and to permit of conveniently unlocking and removing the body whenever desire The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claim. a
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
Figure 1 is an end elevation of the improvement as applied and with the wagon-body in section, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.
The wagon box or bodyA rests on the usual bolsters B, each provided with standards B for engaging the sides of the box or body. The standards 13 are reinforced by braces 0, extending from a band C, fastened by suitable means to the ends of the bolsters B, as is plainly indicated in the drawings. The box-clamp is provided at each side of a bolster with two clamp-rods D, formed at their upper ends into hooks D and provided at their lower ends with screw-threads D the threaded portions of a pair of clamp-rods passing through a tubular arm E, extending horizontally and held in the braces O and the standards B, the ends projecting an equal distance at the sides of the standards. Nuts D screw on the threaded ends of the clamprods D and abut against the under side of the tubular arm E, so that when the nuts are screwed up the rods are drawn downward to cause their hooks D to firmly engage the top edge of the sides of the wagon box or body and securely lock the wagon-box in position on the bolsters B.
Now it will be seen that as the tubular arm E is held in the standard B and the braces C it is evident that the clamp-rods D can be drawn down very tightly on screwing up the nuts D against the tube without danger of breaking the bolster-standard.
It will further be seen that the device is very simple and durable in construction and arranged to permit readily disconnecting or unlocking the wagon-box body by unscrewing the nuts D to allow of lifting the hooks D out of engagement with the sides of the wagon-box. When this is done, the box can be readily removed from the'bolsters; but.
the clamp parts remain in position so as to be ready for instant use when the box is replaced on the bolsters.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination with a bolster and a standard thereon, of braces extended from the bolster to the standard, an arm extended through the standard and also through the braces and projected from both sides of the standard,
clamping-rods passing through holes in the arm and having hook upper ends, and nuts on said rods engaging against the under side of the arm, substantially as specified.
