WILLIAM H. JOY, MARK E. SMITH, AND FRANCIS KORFF, OF LANSING, MICHIGAN,
DETACHAIBLE RUNNER FOR FOLDING GO-CAR'IS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 12, 1911.
Patented Feb. 13, 1912.
Serial No. 626,739.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM H. JoY, MARK H. SMITH, and FRANCIS KORFF, citizens of the United States, residing at Lansing, Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Runners for Folding Gro-Oarts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in detachable runners for carriages.
Our improved detachable runner is especially designed by us for use on folding gocarts 0r carriages, of the type in which the wheels fold under the body when the carriage is collapsed, although it is desirable for and adapted for use in various other types.
The main objects of this invention are to provide an improved detachable runner for carriages which can be attached or removed without the use of tools and which is very secure when attached.
Another object is to provide an improved detachable runner for carriages which may be readily adjusted to carriages of different sizes, so that great accuracy in manufacturing is not required.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
We accomplish the objects of our invention by the devices and means described in the following specification.
The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of our invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this invention, in which Figure I is a detail side elevation of a structure embodying the features of our invention, a pair of carriage wheels with their connecting bar being shown in connection therewith to illustrate the manner of applying the runner to the wheels, the locking toggle being shown in its released position by dotted lines. Fig. II is an inside perspective view of our improved detachable runner. Fig. III is an enlarged cross section of the runner taken on a line corresponding to line 33 of Fig. II.
In the drawings similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents ward end to form the nose 6. The rear end of the shoe portion of the runner is curved up at 7 The plates 5 co-act with the vertical arm 8 of the runner in forming seats for the wheel as shown.
The runner is clamped and locked upon the wheels by means of an adjustable attaching member for one wheel comprising a link 9 pivoted to the vertical arm 8 of the runner at 10, the link being ofiset at its outer end 11 to receive the shank of the wheel engaging hook 12. The shank of the hook 12 is threaded and is adjustably secured to the link by means of the nuts 18. A clamping toggle is provided for the other wheel and consists of the link 14 mounted on the pivot 10. A lever 15 is pivoted to'the link 1d at 16; and the wheel engaging hook 17 is pivoted to the lever 15 at 18. The hook 17 is adapted to engage the felly of the wheel when the lever 15 is swung up to the position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. I, or as shown in full lines in Fig. II.
To look the toggle and clamp the wheel, the lever 15 is swung down against the runner as is shown by full lines 1n Fig. I; this applies tension to the runner and clamps and locks the parts in place. The hook 12 is adjusted to secure the desired clamping tension when the toggle is locked. By thus arranging the parts we secure a structure which may be readily attached or detached, and which, when attached is very secure. Further, it is adjustable so that it may be applied to carts differing quite materially in size, that is, in the space between the wheels, and great accuracy in manufacturing either the carriage or the runners is not required.
Our improved runner when attached is neat in appearance and can be readily attached or detached without the use of tools after the adjustable member has been adjusted t0 the particular carriage on which therunner is to be used. Where the runner is made especially for a particular gocart no adjusting device is needed.
We have illustrated and described our improvement in a simple and effective em bodiment thereof. We are aware, however, that considerable variation and construction of details are possible, but as such variations will no doubt be obvious to those skilled in the art to which this invention relates, we have not attempted to illustrate or describe the same therein Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with the front and rear wheels, of a carriage; a runner formed of angle metal adapted to receive said wheels; plates secured to said runner to coact with the vertical arm of the angle metal to form seats to retain the wheels; an adjustable attaching member comprising a link pivoted to said runner between the wheels, an adjustable wheel engaging hook having a threaded shank and lock nut means con nected to said link; and a clamping toggle comprising a link pivoted on said runner between the wheels, a lever pivot-ed on said toggle link, and a wheel engaging hook pivoted on said lever, the pivot for said hook being disposed so that it is carried past the dead center line of the pivots for the lever to the link and for the link to the runner when the lever is forced against the runner, for the purpose specified.
2. In a runner attachment for a carriage, a runner formed of angle metal. adapted to receive the wheels; plates secured to said runner to coact with the vertical arm of the angle metal to form seats to retain the wheels; an adjustable attaching member comprising a link pivoted to said runner between the wheels, an adjustable wheel engaging hook having a threaded shank and lock nut means connected to said link; and a clamping toggle comprising a link pivoted on said runner between the wheels, a lever pivoted on said toggle link, and a wheel engaging hook pivoted on said lever, the pivot for said hook being disposed so that it is carried past the dead center line of the pivots for the lever to the link and for the link to the runner when the lever is forced against the runner, for the purpose specified.
