To an whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES GODFREY, a citizenof the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Bicycle-Handles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invent-ion is an improvement in that class of bicycles which are provided with a third or supplemental handle for use in steering the machine with one hand.
The novelty consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, whereby the steering handle is adapted for being adjusted and secured in different positions or elevations, as required, to adapt it for use by different riders.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation ofmy improved attachment for bicycles, showing the same in position on the handle-bar. Fig.2 is a plan view of the same.
To put my invention into practice with a bicycle of ordinary construction, consisting of the frame 2, the vertical guide-post 1, to which the handle-bar 3 is connected, and
vother well-known features, I attach to the said handle-bar 3, by means of bolts 6, a clevis 5, which spans the guide-post 1 and is an equal distance between the two handles 4.
Rigidly attached to this clevis 5 is a handle 7, by means of which the rider may properly guide the machine with either hand Connected by suitable screw-bolts beneath the central handle '7 is a curved barS, provided with a slot extending in the direction of its length and attached by means of a clamping screw-bolt 10 to a similar curved slotted piece 9, rigidly attached to the guidebar 3.
The two curved pieces 8 and 9 being thus adapted to slide on each other, it is apparent the steering-handle 7 may be adjusted and clamped higher or lower, as conditions require or preference dictates, and whatever its elevation it is for the time being a rigid attachment of the machine and does not interfere with the use of the ordinary handles 4 in the usual way.

The combinatiomwith abicycle-head, of the vertically-adjustable, supplemental steeringhandle, the clevis pivotally attached to the center of the handle-bar, the two slotted and curved pieces rigidly attached to said clevis and handle-bar, respectively, and adapted to slide on each other, and a device for clamping them in any adjustment, as shown and described.
