END-GATE FOR WAGONS.
Application filed March 28, 1916.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Cirrus A. STROBACK, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Austin, in the county of Mower, tate of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in End-Gates for Wagons; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention is directed to improvements in end gates for wagons, and has for its object to so construct a device of this character that the same can be easily and quickly locked to a wagon or disengaged therefrom.
A further object of the invention is to provide an end gate so constructed that one section thereof may be swung open to dump the load, while the other sections remain in their locked positions.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an end gate so constructed that the same can be operated to permit all of the contents of the wagon body to be removed.
With these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a rear elevation of the device, showing the same in place on a wagon body. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary side elevation. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line 4ld of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on line 5 5 of Fig. 1; Fig. 6 is a sectional view on line (i6 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing 1 indicates the wagon body, the sides 2 thereof being pro vided with cleats 3, said cleats having their lower ends spaced from the bottom of the wagon, the purpose of which will appear later.
The end gate consists of sections 4i, 5 and G, the sections 5 and 6 being hingedly connected, as at 7 whereby the section 6 can be swung to its open position when it is desired to dump the load, and it is for this reason that the cleats are spaced from the bottom of the wagon. To prevent accidental swinging of the section 6, spring actuated bolts 8 are provided, and are slid- Specification of Letters Patent.

ably supported by the brackets 9, said bolts being adapted to normally engage the sockets 10 formed in the sides 2 of the wagon. Since the sections 4 and 5 are provided with the same locking mechanism, the description of one will suflice for both.
Pivotally connected to each of the sections 4, and 5 is a lever 11, said lever having pivotally connected to its ends locking rods 12, which are extended in opposite direc tions and have their ends adapted to em gage the bores 13 formed in the sides of the wagon, said rods being also slidable in the guides 14. Also pivotally connected to the ends of the lever .11 are the inner ends of the links 15, said links being adjustably engaged in the flanges 18 of the angle clips 19, the threaded ends of said links having en.- gaged thereon, jam nuts 20, whereby the clips can be adjusted with respect to the links.
The flanges 21 of the clips are provided with openings 22 which are adapted to be engaged by the outer ends of the rods 12 when the locking mechanism is in its operative position. Thus it will be seen that when the lever 11 is swung to the left that the rods will be engaged in the sockets 13, and as these rods move outwardly, the links will be drawn inwardly, whereby the clips 19 will be simultaneously actuated so that the outer ends of the rods will engage in the openings 22 of the flanges 21 of said clips, thus firmly locking the sections in place.
It will be noted that when the lever 11 is in a horizontal position, that the links and rods will be in such a position as to prevent accidental rocking of the lever, thereby preventing the rods and links from accidentally becoming disengaged with their respective securing devices.
Of course it will be obvious that the uppermost section can be dispensed with, but in that event, the section 5 will necessarily have to .be made in such size as to Wholly close the rear end of the wagon body.
What is claimed is 1. In combination with a vehicle body having sockets formed in its sides, an end gate consisting of a plurality of sections, levers pivotally connected to certain of the sections, rods having their inner ends pivotally connected to the ends of the lever and having their outer ends slidably engaged in the sockets, links having them inner ends pivotally connected to the outer ends of the lever, angle clips adjustably connected to theouter ends of the links, one of the flanges of the clips being provided with openings adapted to be engaged by the outer ends of the rods, when projected through the sock ets.
2. In combination with a vehicle,- body having upper and lower sockets formed in its sides, an end gate, spring actuated bolts carried by the gate for detachably engaging the lower sockets, levers pivotally connected" to the gate, rods having their inner ends pivotally connected to the ends of the lever and slidably engaged in the upper sockets, links having their ends pivotally connected to the outer ends of the lever and having clips adjustably connected to their CHRIS A.
