BARREL.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 6,1904.

LAVRENCE LOVE, OF TOLEDO, OHIO.
BARREL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 785,505, dated March 21, 1905. i
Application filed June 6, 1904. Serial No. 211,376.
To all whom 1315 may concern,.-
Beit known that I, LAWRENCE LOVE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrels; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear` and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My'invention relates to barrels, the staves and, if desired, the heads of which are composed of papier-mch, wood-pulp, or other suitable composition.
The objects of my invention are to furnish a light cheap strong barrel which shall be tight and effective, which shall be easily and readily assembled and taken apart b v an unskilled person, and which may be packed in knockdown form for transportation, thus permitting the barrel to be reshipped in compact form at low freight rates, to be reassembled and refilled, and thus to be used over and over. I attain these objects by means of the devices and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, and shown and illustrated'in the accompanying drawings, inl which- Figure 1 is a central vertical sectional elevation of my barrel, taken on line a', Fig. 2; and Fig. 2, a central horizontal sectional plan view of the same, taken on line m w', Fig. 1. Like numerals of reference indicate like parts of both views.
In the drawings, 1 1 are staves, composed of papier-mch, wood-pulp, or some other suitable substance and having the bulge and taper of ordinary barrel-staves. may be formed in molds or dies under great pressure. In the example shown in the drawings I have shown a barrel having four staves; but it will be obvious that this number may be varied according to the size and character of the barrel. The staves should, however, be exactly alike, so that they may be assembled and use d interchangeably without the necessity for fitting or selecting the staves.
derstood without further explanation.
These parts Each stave is provided upon one of its margins with an overlapping flange 2 and upon its other margin with an underlapping flange 3, the flange 2 of each stave overlapping the flange 3 of the adjoining stave. The flanges are so formed that the barrel presents smooth interior and exterior surfaces. Each end of each of the staves is chamfered and shouldered to form a chime for the reception of a head 4.
5k 5 are L-shaped angle-plates disposed in the angles of the heads and the inner side of the staves. One wing of each plate 5 is provided with a threaded hole for the reception of a screw or bolt 6, passing through a pair of lapped flanges 2 3, and the other Wing of the plate is provided with a like hole for the reception of a screw or bolt 7, passing through the head of the barrel near its margin. It will be seen that the angle-plates and their screws not onlyT serve to detachably secure the heads in place, but they also secure the overlapping flanges of the staves rigidly together. At each end of the barrel a fiat metal hoop 8 is provided, which serves as a hoop and as a protection for the chimes of the staves as well as a washer for the screws or bolts 6, which in turn hold the hoops 8 in place. The barrel is provided with circumferential grooves for the reception of stout Wire hoops 9, but other forms of hoop may be used, if desired.
The manner of assembling and disconnecting the partsl of my barrel will be readily un- It will be seen that the parts may be readily assembled` by an unskilled person for use and may as quickly and conveniently be taken apart and packed into compact form for transportation.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and' desire to secure by Letters Patent,
In a barrel, a series of identical staves, each stave having on one of its longitudinal ,niargins an outer iange and having on its other longitudinal marginan'inner flange, the outer flanges of said series of staves overlapping l the correspondinginner ianges on the adjoining staves, heads for the barrel, hoops near the ends of the barrel, angle-plates disposed in the angles of the head and staves, screws which pass through said overlapping flanges and engage the hoops and angle-plates, and screws which engage the ang1eplates with the heads.
In testimony whereof I afHX my signature in presence of two wltnesses.
LAW'RENGE LOVE.
