Be it known that I, (irUS'lAYE Bnxxirrr, of Ravenswood, Long Island, and whose post-office address is 517 \Vest Twenty-ninth street, borough of Manhattan, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corner- Fasteners, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it flpPGl'ltllllS to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improved devices for fastening the side rails of metallic bedsteads to the corner posts. and particularly to what are known as three-piece beds; 2'. (2., beds in which the side rails are rigidly joined to each other by crossing end rails which carry permanently the woven wire or other spring.

The object of the invention is to simplify the ctmstruction of the parts at the corner so that they may be made not only strong but at a reduced cost.

It is further an object of my invention to adapt the corner fastening to beds having round side rails, and to facilitate the connection of the corner fastening therewith.

My invention involves other features of importance and all will be fully set forth hereinafter and particularly pointed out in the claim.

Reference is had. to the accompanying drawings which illustrate, as an example, the preferred manner in which my invention may be practically en'ibodied.

l igure 1 is a sectional view showing the post section secured by the chill and indicating the side rail section in engagement with the first named part; and Fig. 2 is a sectional plan on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.

The corner fastening, as shown in the drawings, is applied to each of the four corners of the bed. Only one has been illustrated, however, since all of the fastenings are duplicates. In the drawings, (1 indicates the corner post and 7) the adjacent side rail, which parts are to be secured together by means of the fastening.

The post section of the fastening comprises a plate 0 which may be of stamped or malleable iron and which is fastened permanently to the st by means of a chill d, or in other worc s, a mass of metal cast Specification of Letters Patent.

that the cast metal shrinks on the post and becomes a wrmauent part thereof, into which metal the plate or post section 0 is tirmly and permanently embedded The post section I: has a vertical edge 0 parallel to the center line of the post and the outer portion of such plate is formed with two hooks which are arranged one above the other and the inner surfaces of which in clino downward and inward toward the post.

The rail section comprises a curved or channcl-slmped part 0 adapted to partly embrace and conform to the rail 7). As shown in Fig. 2, said rail is formed with openings 1 7) and these are adapted to receive studs 6 cast integral with the body section a of the rail part of the fastening. The rail part or section of the fastening is formed of malleable iron and the body 6 has prongs or clamps thereon, which are adapted, after the body 0 is engaged with rail b, to be bent down around the rail as shown in the d 'awings. The prongs 6 therefore cooperate with the studs 6 and serve securely to hold the rail section engaged with the rail.

Integral with the body a of the rail section is a vertically disposed face plate f which lies in a plane transverse to the rail and is braced against the body part a by means of ribs 7'. At its upper end the face plate f is provided with a horizontal extension 1' projecting inward from the direction of the post a. To this extension f and to the upper portion of the face plate f is bolted, riveted or otherwise fastened the angle iron g which constitutes the cross rail connecting the two side rails of the bed and forming therewith a rigid rectangular frame. In addition to this the angle iron cross rail 9 serves to carry the woven spring fabric It 011 which the bed is spread.

Integral with the face plate f and projecting from one vertical side edge thereof toward the post a is the pin plate 71 provided with two pins 2' cast as a part thereof and projecting from the inner side of the plate in such a manner that they may enter respectively the hooks 0" as shown in the drawing. The parts are so arranged and proportioned that when engaged in the manner described, the tapering form of the hooks 0" will cause the two sections of the fastening to be drawn toward each other and the perpendicular edge 0 of the plate 0 around the post in a cold metal mold, so forced into engagement with the outer surface of the face plate f. This forms a rigid, solid connection between the two parts and, in addition, the engagement of the face plates with the hooks serves as a brace for the hooks and reinforces them so that there is no danger of the hooks being broken off by the strain on the fastening.

My invention therefore enables me to 0011- struct the corner fastening of simple cast ings of malleable iron, which may be securely applied to the two parts of the bed and which when engaged together form a connection which is practically solid throughout. It also provides for the easy attachment of the rail section to the rail and avoids the necessity of bolts and the like for this purpose.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is In a bedstead corner fastening, the combination of a post section, a vertically disposed plate extending outwardly therefrom and having a downwardly extending recess in the upper edge and an inwardly and downwardly recess in the outer edge, a collar cast about said post section and a portion of said plate and securing the plate to the post section, a cylindrical rail and a rail fastener having a substantially vertical face to engage with the outer edge of the plate and brace the same, the rail fastener also having pins adapted to enter said recesses and a body portion presenting a concave surface to receive said rail and provided with the stud intermediate the side edges thereof adapted to enter an opening in the rail, said side edges presenting pliable prongs adapted to be bent over the rail and with said stud hold said rail and rail fastener in their rigid engagement.
