BOX-STRAP FASTENER.
To all who/m, t may concern:
Be it known thatl I, EMIL DIETZE, a citlzen of the UnitedA States, and resident of .Richmond Hill, borough of Queens, in the county of Queens, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box-Strap Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention refers to box strap f astening devices. The strap with which 1t 1s used is of metal or other material and is of the kind that is'ordinarily used for fastening a band around a boX, bale, orother package, in cases Where it is essential that the ends of the strap should bc closely united, so that they cannot be pulled apart or disjoined, and hence so that there cannot be any unauthorized opening or pilfering of the package. A primary object of the invention, among many which might be mentioned, is to provide a fastening device which is the equivalent of a' seal to Ibe tightly attached to the strap sections, so that it cannot be detached therefrom without breaking, and if detached cannot possibly be reattached, and if broken will immediately indicate that the boX or package has been irregularly entered. The invention, therefore, consists essentially in the sealing or locking fastener, having many peculiar and distinguishing characteristics, and in the construction and arrangement of the various parts substantially as will be hereinafter described and claimed.

Figure 1 is a plan view ,of my improved seal or fastenenshown read to be compressed upon two sections o a strap embraced thereby for-the purpose of fastening the same together.
Figure 2 is a similar plan view of my improved device after the fastening device has been duly compressed by suitable means and shows the side flanges forced down tightly upon the strap. i

A and B designate two portions, sections, or ends ot a strap intended to pass around a box or other package for the purpose of strongly securing the same, and said ends overlap each other and are to be closely bound together, by means of av special seal or fastening device, in order that they cannot Ibe pulled apart or tampered with.
The seal or fastener is made of metal or any other similar or effective material, preferably of square or rectangular form, though it may be made of any shape and be of any size and outline. I have shown several different forms, which are the equivalents of each other, as they all do the same work and vary only in details.
In the form shown in Figures 1 to 6 the base of seal is aiflat and unobstructed plate 1 having its opposite ends provided with raised parallel edges 2, 2, bent at right angles to the base 1, further the base 1 as well as the raised edges 2 are'provided with a pair of slots 5, 5, located opposite to each other and cut out of the material of the seal,
a portion of the cut in each case being as statedv in the base 1 and a portion in the edge 2, and there being a part of the cut out material, as 3, left integral'with the seal and projecting horizontally from the raised members 2 so as to lie over a portion ofthe slot 5, as clearly indicated in Figures 1 and 3. Ordinarily this integral lip or projection 3 does not comprise all the material taken out by cutting the slot 5, but only a portion of it, Athe rest being discarded, as it is only desired to strike lout short lips 3 which when the sides 2 are bent down upon the strap ends lying between these sides, `as shown may' intervene between the 'sides 2 and the strap ends and have the function of compressing said straps or a portion thereof into the slots 5 and thereby form an effectual plant or binder, so that the parts will all be bound very closely and intimately together, and sothat it will be impossible to dislodge the seal or fastener from the strap sections, for the only way that the strap can be removed from the boX or bale will be by cutting`or breaking it. In Figure 1 these parts are all shown in the relative position which they take when the uncomp-ressed fastener is applied to a pair of strappings. After some suitable vpress has been applied tothe seal and the edges 2 have been pressed down on the' strap ends, the parts will occupy the position shown in Figures 2 and 4 andin the side view of Fig ure 5, as also the section of Figure 6, where it will be seen that the lips 3 have been bent and a securely combined fastener results in the same manner as in the fist form of the invention, `the changes and differences alluded to being only trifling and without any real change of result, the chief point in this form as in the other is, to furnish means b which when the side anges ,are compressed, the ymaterial'along the edges of the .strap sections will be forced into the slotsin the fastener. l V
In FigureslO, 11 and 12 I show a further alternative form, with equivalent means for producing the same result, and varying only in minor features which are related to each other in la somewhat different way. In this form 7 denotes the base of the seal having the sides 8 which are bent up from theedges of the base 7 and are provided with opposite slots 10 which have been cut into the sides 8'as1well as into the bottom 7. These sides 8 are preferably inclined instead of being bent at right angles, and when so inclined they will be closer together at the top than at the bottom and hence the straps `A and B will be kept in place and if they rise a little will not become disengaged from the fastener, the inclinations'of the sides in this case having the same effect as the. horizontall projectionV of the lips13. The portion 9 cut out of each of the slots 10 and under thesides2, and the latter have been4 left integral with the base 7 is bent over pressed, down so as to be parallel with the base 1 instead of being at right angles to said base. The lips3, as it were, when so bent add a segment of thickness to the sides 2, the effect of which is to press down certain portions of thel edges of the straps A and B into the slots 5, as seen in Figure 4,v at the edges 11, which latter show a somewhat curved form, as in Figures 2 and 5.
f The seating of portions of the straps A and B in slots 5 makes a locking.
In the form of the invention illustrated in Figures 7, 8 and 9 the same general outline and ,list of parts obtains as in Figures 1 to G, with the exception that the lips or projections 4, 4, instead of coming out horizontally, as 3, 3, from the raised sides 2, rise vertically from the base 1a and hence lie parallel to ,the vertical sides 2a, there being slots 6, 6, similar to the aforesaid slots 5. In this form thestrap sections A and B when the seal is placed thereon., will. lie on top of the lips 4, instead of being underneath the lips 3, in the first form, and hence when the sides 2n are compressed upon the strap sections, as shown in Figure 9, the upper ends of the lips 4, will serve to cau the portions 12, 12, of the strap sections to be lifted or curved upwardly by the force of the clamping effect into the slots 6,'6, as shown in the section of Fi 1re 8 and in the plan of Fig ure 9; but tie locking engagement of all very effectual` interthe various partsis substantially the same,
upon same in the original formation of the seal, thus thickening the base 7 at the endsI of the slots 10 and providing the same kind of a thickened abutment on the base as is provided by the horizontal lips 3 after the raised sides 2 have been bent down thereon; for it will be seen that with these thick portions 9 upholding the strap ends A and B, when the sides 8 are .pressed down upon the said strap ends, the result willbe exactly as indicated in Figure 11 where the edges 13 of the strap sections will be lifted up- Wardly by the members 9 and flexed over@ said members and into the slots 10 thereby causing the same kind of a rigid embedding of the material of the strap in the slots of the fastener, as is accomplished in the other forms `of the invention, with the same .firm and unyielding union.
Many changes in the exact form, shape and relative location of various members, parts, and connections may be made without exceeding the scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention,lwhat I claiml as new and desire to secure by Letters .Patent is:
1. In a box *strap fastener, a seal plate having parallel raised edges and opposite slots' cut partly in the edges and partly in the plate to leave a portion of the cut out material 'to form inner integral projections, in combination witlroverlapping strap' sections against which the raised edges are bent to compress the said raised edges, thel projections and the strap ends together, and force the latter into the slots.
2. In a boX strap fastener, a seal plate having parallel raised'edges and opposite slots cut partly in the edges and partly in the plate to leavea portion of the cut out material to form integral projections eX- tending inwardly from the slots, in combination with a strap whose ends overlap between the raised edges and against which the edges are adapted to be bent to force the projections against the strap and press the strap into the slots.
3. In a box strap fastener, a seal yplate having parallel raised edges and opposite slots cut partly in the edges and partly in the plate to leave a portion of the cut out material to form inner integral projections adapted to lie under and thicken Said edges when they are bent down inwardly, in combination with overlapping strap ends which lie between the said edges, and against which the latter are compressed with the inner integral projections between them to drive the material of the strap into the slots with a curved embedded effect.
4. In a boX strapfastener, a seal having a flat base provided with parallel rightangled raised edges and out of which slots are cut partly in the base and partly in 30 the edges to leave a portion of the cut out material to form inwardly extending'horizontal projections that lie parallel to the iat base, in combination with overlapping strap members against which the raised edges are compressed with the horizontal projections between them and the base to force the material of the strap members with a curved embedded eect into the slots of the base.
5. In a box strap fastener, a seal device having a base member and parallel raised edges, said base and edges being formed with slots cut partly in the base and partly in the edges to leave a portion of the cut out material to form integral projections located between theraised edges and the base to furnish thickened points which serve to compress the material of the strap section into curved form at certain points on the l edges, andcause said compressed material to enter the slots in the seal, whereby an interlocking inseparable combination of the seal and strap results.
