PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUST STROBEL, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO AMERICAN METAL VARE CO., A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
FASTENING FOR BEDSTEADS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 732,133, dated June 30, 1903.
Application filed March 17, 1902. Serial No. 98,694. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern.-
Beit known that I, AUGUST STROBEL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastenings for Bedsteads, of which the following is a specification, and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
ro This invention relates to means for detachably securing the side and head rails of a bedstead to the corner-poststhereof; and it has for its object to provide a fastener which shall be extremely simple in construction, so that I5 the bed-frame may be readily taken apart or set up, which shall be inexpensive of manuture, and which shall secure the parts together in a rigid manner and effectively prevent them from working loose. zo The invent-ion consists of the combination and arrangement ofparts hereinafter particularly described, specifically designated in the appended claims, and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective of a bedsteadframe joint or fastening constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 relates to a detail of the fastening plate or pin and the wedge or key for securing the same, and Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. l.
Referring to the drawings, 5 indicates a bracket provided with a vertical vaperture 6, in which is designed to be secured in any suitable manner one of the corner-posts of a bedstead orframe. Integral with the bracket 5 and extending horizontally therefrom at right angles to each other are arms or eXtensions 7, to one of which is designed to be fastened the head or foot rail and to the other 4o one of the side rails, as 8, of the bed-frame. Each of the extensions 7 is provided with a vertical slot 9, elongated longitudinally with respect to the extension and the -upper and outer faces of which are disposed at a right angle with relation to each other. The rails of the bed, as shown by the side rail 8, are made of angle-iron, and when in position the top and side of each rail rests against the upper and outer faces, respectively, of the extension to which such rail is attached. 5o The top of the rail is also provided with an elongated aperture 10, adapted to register with the vertical aperture in the extension 7. Passing through these alined apertures is a hat pin or plate 11, having an enlarged head 12 resting when in place upon the upper face of the rail, and the pin has near its lower end whichprojects below the extension an opening 13, designed to receive a key or wedge 14, whose upper and lower inclined 6o faces react bet-Ween the lower face of the eX- tension and the bottom wall of the opening 13. When the parts are assembled, Yas shown in Fig. 1, and the wedge 14 forced into the opening 13, the rail will be firmly clamped between the enlarged head of the pin and the wedge, thereby providing a rigid and secure joint. To separate the head from the railpost, it is only necessary to knock out the wedge and remove the pin 11. 7o
I claim as my invention- 1. In a bedstead-fastening, in combination, a bracket adapted to be secured to a cornerpost and having a horizontal extension provided with a vertical aperture, the upper face of the extension being dat and in a plane below the top of the bracket which forms a shoulder for the extension, an angle-rail the top of which restsA upon the upper face of the extension and is provided with an aperture 8o registering with the aperture in the eXtension, a pin passing through the apertures and having a flat rectangular head which abuts against the said shoulder and extends iiush with the top of the bracket, the pin also having an opening near the end thereof, and a wedge located in the said opening and reacting between the extension and the bottom wall of such opening for clamping the rail and extension together. 9o
2. In a bedstead-fastening, in combination, a bracket adapted to be secured to a cornerpost and having a horizontal extension provided with an elongated vertical slot and the upper and outer faces of which are fiat and at a right angle to each other, an angle-rail the top and side of which coincide with the upper and outer faces of the extension, a slot in the top of the rail registering With the slot sion and the bottom wail of the opening for in 'the extension, a fiat pin passing through clamping the rail and extension together.
the registering slots and. having an enlarged head bearing on the. top of the rail and an opening in the end thereof which projects Witnesses: below the extension, and a wedge located in GUSTAV STIEGLITZ, the opening and reacting between the eXten- ADOLPH HARTMANN.
