1 Application filed may 27,
To all whom-itmayroncern: 3 Be it'lz'nown that fimlinNJimrm H. JOHN- SON, and" Benson M. -PHnLi s,'citiZens of the United States, resid ing at ftoanokeyin the county of Roanoke, State'of- Virginia, have invented certain new and -usefulImprovements in Bed-Frame Connections; and we do hereby declare the following to" be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. p f i The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in bed structures and is directed more particularly to the provision of means for securing the side rails of a bed frame to the corner posts. The usual method of securement of the end rails of a bed to the corner posts thereof comprises open socket members'adapted to receive and seat lugs, substantially circular in cross section and connected with the ing taperingly reduced toward their lower ends to insure a firm engagement of the socket members therewith, preventing any undesired looseness, but this wedging relation is open to considerable objection in view of thedifficulty of disengaging the lugs and socket members when it is desired to disassemble the bed, particularly if the bed has been assembled and in use for a considerable length of time.
The object of the present invention is to provide'a simple and eifective connection for the corner posts and side rail ends of a bed, in which any relative looseness between the parts is prevented, but which permits of ready'disassembly when desired.
l/Vith the above and other objects and ad vantages in view, the invention resides more particularly in the novel. combination, formation and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings: 7
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the improved corner posts and side rail connec tions.
Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof. A
Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view therethrough on the line 33 of Fig. 1. I
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the connection. V
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the side SPefifimm e s P e t-'1 -.P tent dSent- 75 rail end, with the clamping plateli removed.
" Referringnowmore particularly to the drawings, 5 designates a corner post of=a bed, and 6 designates one ofthe' side rails 'thereof, the c'orner'postt ii'i the present ini stance carrying the male member of the connection, andthis male member comprises a block 7 having one end face-curved transversely throughout toifit against the periphery of the corner posts to which it is secured and formed on the opposite 'face'of the block is a vertically extending lug'8' cylindrical in shape and connected along one side integrally with the face of the block by a web 9, whereby the peripheral portions of the lug at the sides of'the web form retaining shoulders 10. At the bottom of the lug the block 7 is provided with a ledge or seat 11.
Secured to the side rail 6 is a coupling block '12 having its free end portion cut away on one side'and provided at its extremity with a transversely arcuate channel 13 cooperating with a corresponding channel 14: formed transversely in one end of a clamping block to define a substantially cylindrlcal recess for receiving the lug 8, the channels intersecting the ends of the blocks outwardly of the inner faces of the blocks whereby the outer side of the recess is open to receive the web portion 9.
7 F orsec'uring the clamping block 15 to the coupling block 12, a bolt 16 is provided which projects from the inner face of the coupling block 12 and is passedthrough the block 15 and has threaded thereon the wing nut 17, it being noted that when the nut 17 is loosened the blocks may be readily detached from thelug 8, while still connected with the bolt, and to hold the block 15 against rotative movement on the bolt,-a lug 18 projects from its inner end portion 7 and is engageable in a socket 19 in the block 12. It is noted that when the blocks 15 are clamped onlthe lug, the clamping block 15 substantially fills the cutaway portion of the coupling block 12 to present'a neat. ap-" 'pearance, the inner face of the blocks being spaced slightly apart to permit a positive clamping engagement of the'lug with the recess portions of the block, and both blocks seat on the ledge 11.
An exceedingly simple structure has thus been provided which will positively and rigidly connect adjacent side rail and corner post portions of a bed, and which may be having a cross-sectionally rectangular "end portion that is cut away at one side with a "a bed having a vertical lug'and a seat'at the base of the lug, of an angle iron bed rail resultant shoulder and a longitudinal face, there being a vertically" extending channel insaid face at its free end portion and there 7 being a socket in said face adjacent its inner .end portion, a stud: bolt projecting from- 7 said face between the channel and the socket, a clampin fblock disposed removably against said ace with one end against end portion of the block having a'vertical named channel and receiving with it the lug of the post, the block having'a lug rethe shoulder, the inner'face of the'o y' 1 channel in cooperative relation to the-*first movably engaged in said socket and having",
an opening through the block from which the stud' bolt projects, and a clamping nut upon the studbolt beyond the block.
In testimony whereof We afiix our signa tures in thepresence of two Witnesses.
