BEDSTEAD. Y
ATo all whom t may concern Be it known that I, JACOB L. MOORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Muncie, in the county of Delaware and State of Indiana, have invented acertaln new and useful Improvement in ABedsteadstof which the following is a full, clear, concise, and eXact description.
My invention relates to bed-steads `Or bedframes which employ side railsof angle iron formation that are united *atl their ends with the corner posts of the bed-stead which may be ofwood or metal. .The invention has for its object the pro-vision of improved meansffor eecting union betweenthe bed posts and the ends of the side rails.
My `invention resides in the corner post of a bed having a rail ,supporting` lug or lugs projecting toward the adjacent end of a side rail of the bed, in combination with a coupling member engageable with said lug or lugs and carried by this adjacent end of the side rail, this coupling member itself being also formed of angle iron and of such shape as to have very rigid union with said side rail end to which it is attached. In forming thisA coupling member I employ a blank of angle 1iron and cut from it a section Aof suitable length. The coupling mem ber which is formed from this angle iron'is disposed at right angles to the rail which carries it. In one wall ofthe Vangle iron section'l I form a recess Or recesses corresponding in numberto the number of lugs uponthe adjacent post, these recesses being preferably in' the nature of oblong holescompletely surrounded by the metal Lof the angle iron. The otherV wall of the angle iron section is so cut away and notchedl as to have a part adapted `to overlie the horizontal wall of the angle iron rail .carrying it and another part which is adapted to underlie this wall of the angle' iron rail and which latter partis riveted or bolted against the .inner face of the upright wall of vsaid angle iron rail. The parts ofthe coupling member between which tht-,horizontal wan of thtJ rail .is thus disposed have snug fit with this' Vwall to prevent.y turning movement of the rail in thel vertical post with respectto. the
I will explain my invention morefully by reference to the accompanying drawing showing the preferred embodiment. thereof and in which Figure l is' a perspective view Specification of Letters Patent.

illustrating the invention, this figure showing a portion of the bed post anda portion of a side rail assembled-therewith in accordance with the invention; Fig. 2' is a side view of the structure appearing in Fig. l taken from the outside of `the bed; 'f
Fig. 8 is a side view ofthest'ructure appearing in Fig. l taken from the inside of the bed structure; Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line 4 4 of Fig. 3; Fig. 5l isa front view of the coupling member separated from all associated parts; and Fig. 6 illustrates the coupling member in conjunction with an angle iron out of-whichl it has been formed.
Like parts are indicated by similar characters of reference throughoutthel different Each of the four posts 1 of the' bed-stea or bed-frame may be of wood or metal. The lugs 2, by means of which each of the two angle' ironside rails 3 are to be assembled with the corner posts, may be supported upon these posts in any suitable way. 'As illustrated, these lugs 2 are in the nature of outwardly projected hooks Awhich are struck from the plate 4, this plate being secured the. employment of a portion'of angle iron out of which thel coupling member may readily bemade. l
One wall 6 of the angle iron coupling member is to have flat contact with the plate 4 or is to engage the post directlyif such plate is absent. ThisV wall' 6 has two lug receiving Openings 7 ,in -the embodiment of the'invention illustrated, inasmuch as I have shown two sets of lugs 2 upon the illustrated post 1, thesefsets being separated longitudinally of the post. yItis obvious thatl the invention isnot. to be limited to the number f l openings'7v in-said coupling membenl versely of the kcoupling member to receive the horizontal Y wall of the" corresponding side rail whereby the coupling l:member is disposed at right angles to said side rail.
The portion 9 which Overlies the notch hasV snugengagement with the upper face of the horizontal wall of the side rail while the j portion l0 projects inwardly from the portion 9 and has snug engagement with the bottom face of said horizontal lwall of the side rail. or depressed at its inner end upon one side of the horizontal wall of the side rail as indicated at l1 to lessenthe work of the tools that ;are employed in making the coupling member and also to facilitate the insert-ion of the adjacent rail end into the notch, it
being possible to incline thecoupling mem-y ber with respect to the rail end in the process ofrafss'embl. a A
Holes 12 are formed in the part l0 of the coupling member to receive the shanks of rivets ,-13 which are employed to eiiect firm engagement between the part 10 of the coupling': member and the upright wall of the side rail', saidl lpart, l0 being beneath the .horizontal wall of the side railA and inen-r gagement with the inner `face or" the upright wall of the side rail. The parts 9 and 10 of v the coupling member are preferably in the same planev and parallel with the upright wall ,of the side rail or, more generally means offthe embodiment of the invention illustrated the coupling members maybe -reversed in position to bring the horizontalV walls of the side'rails ylowermost,. invwhich reversed -arrangement these horizontal side walls of the side rails may readily support the ordinary wooden bed slats. v
YThe, notch. 8 desirably terminates flush with :the-inner face of. that wall 6 of the coupling member which engages the lugs andthe end of the side rail desirably abn-ts against such face of this wall A6 to secure Amore rigid relation between the post and rail. Inas'much'fas the bottom edge of the `portion 9 andk the top edge or' the portion 10 are separated a distance just. about equal ,to
vthe thickness of the horizontal, wall of the side rail, the portion 9 is caused to terminate over the inner/enlarged part .ofthe notchjS Yin ordertoV form an enlarged gap into which the end of the side rail maybe inserted while the rail land the rail coupling member are tilted with respect to each other to make 'it' easy to assemble these elements preparatory The notch 8 is desirably enlarged notch to facilitate the assembly to passing the rivets 13 therethrough. Owing to the engagement of the' portion 10 with'the inner faces of the two walls of the side rails, the engagement of the portion 9 with the outer face of the horizontal wall of the4 side rail, and the abutmentV of the adjacent end ofthe side rail against'the wall 6 of the coupling member, a very rigid and firml union between the side rail'and the coupling member is effected which union is of such a nature as to prevent the tilting of said Vsidev rail with respect to the coupling member whenvfthehead and foot pieces or boards of the bed-stead are united by the side rails. Y
l The invention is not to be limited to the reversability of the side railsvnot to the de tails of construction illustrated.
` vHaving thus. described my invention I claim ais new and desire to secure by Letters Patent. the following A Y v l. In a bedstead, the combination with a bed-stead corner. post; ofa side railrsu'pporting lug carried by the post;` an angle iron side ,rail havingponc wall horizontal and the other wall upright; and a coupling member formed of Vangle iron and having Y lug and the other wall provided with anotch terminating at the first wall of the coupling member and extending transversely of the coupling member and separating this wall of the couplingmember into twol portions one wall Aadapted for engagement with said Y between which the horizontal wall of said siderail is snugly received7 one of said portions being secured to thel upright wall ofV the'side rail and 'againstuthe inner face of Ithis upright wall, andboth of saidp'ortions ofthe coupling member being upon the inner side ofthe general plane of the upright wall oiithe side rail, the inner end'of the notch Y .in the coupling member being enlarged on one side of the horizontalgwall of the side frail, the portion of the coupling member on theother side of said horizontal wall terminating over the enlarged portion of the railv and coupling member.
