RAlL-TIE AND FASTENlNG.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 14, 1907.
Application filed February 20, 1906. Serial llo. 302,078.
To all whom it muy concern,.-
Be it known that hmmm J. Kos'i, deceased, late a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Owensboro, in the county of Daviess and State of Kentucky, did
invent new and useful Improvements in Rail- T ies and Fastenings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to rail ties and fastenings, and particularly to metallic ties and means for securing the rails thereto, the invention having for its object to provide a me tallic lie and fastening means which simple of construction, inexpensive of production, durable and efficient in use to securely hold and brace the rails against deflection under the strains to which they are sul'ijected, and adapted to permit of the removal of the fastened rails and the substitution of new rails therefor when occasion requires.
The y referred embodiment of the invention isi lustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
.Figure 1 is a plan view of a tie and rails seated thereon and secured by the improved fastening moans; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the tie and cross section through the rails fastened thereto; and Fig. 3 is a cross section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Referring new more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 1 denotes a hollow metallic tie preferably of oblong rectangular box formation and provided with a top 2, sides 3 and ends 4 integral in single casting. The bottom or base wall 5 of the tie is removable and is secured in practice by screws, or other suitable fastenings, 6 to cross pieces or projections 7, cast or secured to the end Walls 4. The bottom vvall 5 bears against the lower edges of the side and end walls and may be suitably constructed in practice to,
form a tight joint to prevent access of Water to the tie and deterioration of the same therefrom. The tie may be filled in practice with earth, ashes, cement or any suitable material to give it a desired Weight.
The top Wall of the tie is provided adjacent each end thereof with a depressed seat sup-s port 8 for the rail 9, and on each side of said seat support is provided with transverse slots 10 and 11, the said seat support S being formed with a depending apertured lug or eye 12. Disposed on oppos1te sides of each rail are fish or tie plates 13 and 14 connected to each otherland to the tie on o positc sides of the rail joint by bolts 15. `hase fish or tie plates are of sufficient length to extend the desired degree beyond the sides of the tie and the joint to eilectually connect and sup# port the vmeeting ends of the rails. The two tie plates are provided With' laterally extending supporting plates or flanges 15 and 1?, respectively, which reject outwardly and inwardly from the joint and over the slots 10 and 11 and rest upon the u per Well of the tie. These plates are provi( ed with bracing ribs or enlargements 1S of any suitable form to reinforce them against strain, and are also, respectively, provided with downwardly rojecting apertured lugs or oyes 19 anV 20 which reject, respectively, down into the body ol) the tie through the slots 10 and 11 and thus lie on opposite sides of the seat support 8. p
The passage in the lug or eye 20 of the supporting flange of the inner tie plate 14 is threaded to receive the inner terminally threaded end of a tie bolt 21 'which passes loosely through the eye ,l2 in the seat support, the eye of the flange or enlargement of the outer fish or tie plate 13, and through the adjacent end Wall 4 of the tie. When the bolt is screwed up the plate 14 is drawn outward with companion plate 13 until the lug 19 of the latter rests against the outer Wall of the slot 10, whereby the parts will be firmly tied together to hold the rails against lateral, longitudinal and vertical movement,
thus adapting them to elfectually 'withstandy the strains to which they are subjected in service. The outer end of the top wall 1 beyond the slot 10 is preferably enlarged and a )erture'd to form an eye 22 for the passage of 'alle boit and to increase the area of the Wall at this point to form an effective stop or abutment for the lug or eye 10. The rails will thus he fastened in position insuch manner that they will be securely held from movement except to the slight extent necessary for expansion and contraction, while the bolts 21 maybe withdrawn to permit of the disconnection of the rails from the tie and the convenient substitution of new rails therefor when occasion requires.
The tie and fastenings are simple in construction, may be conveniently and inexpensively manufactured and are adapted to effectually serve as supports and securing ICC iiieans whieli hold the rails lirniljT against iiiovenient and lessen the amount of Wear falling thereon.
llaving thus desoribed the invention, what is elaiined is:
1.. A tie provided with seat supports and slots at opposite sides thereof, tie plates provided with flanges adapted to rest upon the tie above said slots and having fastening members projeeting downwardly through said slots, and a fastening eleiiient extending through the seat support and fastening ineinbers of the tie plates to hold said plates oonneeted to the tie.
2. A tie provided adjacent eaoh end with a j seat support provided with a bolt passage and formed on opposite sides of said seat support with slots, tie plates having bracing flanges to rest upon the tie and overlying said slots, said flanges being provided with lugs projecting downwardlyT through said slots, and a bolt extending through said lugs and the passage in the seat support and securing the parts in applied position.
3. A tie provided adj aeent each end with a seat support having a bolt passage and forined with. slots on opposite sides of said seat supports, tie plates provided with laterally extending flanges resting on the tie and overlying said slots, said slots being provided with bracing enlargements and with lugs projeeting downwardly through said slots, and a bolt passing through the tie, the seat support and lugs and holding the tie plates in applied position.
4. A hollow inetallio rail tie provided in its top with a seat support and slots on opposite sides thereof tie plates adapted to bear on opposite sides of a rail and having flanges resting on the top of the tie and provided with projections extending downwardly into the body of the tie through said slots, and a fastening device securing both projeetions to the tie within the latter and holding the tie plates in assembled position.
In testimony whereof, I affix in v signature in the presenee of two witnesses. Y
