1 b all whom it may concern .Be it known that I, CARL E. Pn'rnnson, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kerhoven, in the county of Swift and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railroad-Ties and Rail-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to railway ties and rail fasteners.
The object of my invention is to produce a metallic railway tie adapted to preserve the desired resiliency in a railway track and means for fastening rails thereon to prevent their displacement and separating under the strain of use and changes in atmospheric and thermal conditions; and a further object of my invention is to produce a more simple, cheap and efficient combined railway tie and rail fastener therefor than has heretofore been attained.
To these ends my invention includes the combination ant. arrangement of component parts to be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, in which like reference characters indicate similar parts: Figure l is a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line of Fig. 2; and Fig. at is a detail view of the parts comprising my device.
My invention includes gene ally, a tie structure formed of corrugated metal, U-shaped in cross section and open at its top; a bracing plate carried longitudinally of the tie, resting on its base and intermediate of its side walls; supporting plates or rail rests having down-turned flanges bolted at predetermined distances apart on the tie; a rail plate having an upturned hook at one end to engage the base of a rail and a down-turned hook at its opp0- site end to engage the edge of said rail rest removably bolted to the rail rest between one wall of thetie and the bracing plate, and a rail fastener removably bolted to said rail rest and rail plate.
Referring now to the drawings, 1 indicates a railroad tie formed of metal being U-shaped in cross section and comprising the base 2 and upturned sides 3. Intermediate of said upturned sides and extend ing longitudinally of the tie, I provide the bracing plate t resting on the base 2 and projecting to the level of the top of the Specification of Letters Patent.

For the purpose of supporting rails adjacent to the ends of the tie I provide a plate (Shaving downturned ends or flanges 7 which embrace the top of the sides 3 and are bolted thereto, as shown, at 8. Mounted on said rail rest or plate 6 is carried the rail plate 9 having an upturned book 10 at one end and a downturned flange 11 at the opposite end, the hook 10 being adapted to engage the edge of the base 12 of the rail 13, while the flange 11 extends downwardly and abuts against the end edges of the sides 3 and bracing plate 4. The rail fastener 14-, comprising a flat plate 14* and clamping portion 14:", engages the opposite side of the rail from that engaged by the hook portion 10 and said fastener is secured in position by a bolt 15 passing through the same and the rail plate 9 and through the supporting plate 6 whereby the tie supporting plates and locking members are secured together to hold the rail in fixed position.
It will be appreciated that the structure of my tie will impart a sul'licient degree of resiliency to a railway structure and that the combination and arrangement of parts described for mounting a rail thereon will secure the same against lateral displacement and prevent the shifting of the rails under the strain of railway use.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to be secured by Letters Patent, is:
1. The combination with a metallic railway tie having upwardly extending longitudinal sides, of a vertical bracing plate resting on the base of the tie intermediate of the sides, a plate resting on the upper edges of said sides and bracing plate and secured to the sides, a rail plate carried on said rail rest plate having an upturned hook on its edge adjacent to the end of the tie adapted to engage the base of a rail and a down turned flange on its opposite end adapted to engage the edge of the rest plate, a clampiug plate engaging the inner side of the rail base, and means for locking said clamping plate, rail plate and ail rest in assembled positions.
2. The combination with a metallic railway tie having upwardly extending longitudinal sides, of a vertical bracing plate resting on the base of the tie intermediate of the sides, a plate resting on the upper edges of said sides and bracing plate having doWnturned flanges secured to the sides of the tie, a rail plate can lied on said rail rest plate having an upturned hook on its edge adjacent to the end of the tie adapted to engage the base of a rail and adownturned flange on its opposite end adapted to abut against the end edge of the sides and said bracing plate,
a clamping plate engaging the outer side of the rail base, and means for locking said clamping plate rail plate and rail rest in assembled positions.
