Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern: v
Be it known that we, FREDERICK P. HUN- KLE and CHARLES NORDFELDT, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Mo- Keesport, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Me tallic Ties and Rail-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing. This invention relates to metallic ties and rail fasteners, and the primary object of our invention is to provide an extremely light,
and durable tie that can be manufactured at a minimum cost, easily t-amped in a roadbed by unskilled labor, and used in lieu of the ordinary type of wooden tie.
Another object of our invention is to provide a tie possessing sufficient strength and firmness to support the great weight of rolling stock and the requisite amount of elasticity to prevent injury to rolling stock.
A. further object of our invention is to furnish a metallic tie with fasteners that can be repeatedly adjusted to compensate for wear and prevent lateral and vertical displacement of rails mounted thereon.
A still further object of this invention is to provide rail fasteners that are durable, inexpensive to manufacture and highly efficient for the purposes for which they are intended.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein like numerals denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is a top plan of a portion of a tie with one of the fasteners thereof partly broken away and partly in section, Fig. 2 is a bottom plan of the same, Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view taken on the line III-III of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4: is an enlarged perspective view of a detached inner fastener.
A metallic tie in accordance with our invent-ion comprises longitudinal side walls 1 and 2 having the upper edges thereof connectcd by a top plate 3 that has lateral extensions 4 at the ends thereof and an 0blong central opening 5. The ends of the opening 5 are in communication with longitudinal slots 6 and the top plate 3, adjacent to said slots, is braced by transverse webs 7 formed integral with the top plate 3 and the side walls 1 and 2. The top plate 1, adjacent to the ends thereof, is provided with integral outer fasteners 8 in the form of splice bars of a greater length than the width of said top plate. The outer-fasteners 8 are adapted to brace the outer sides of rails 9 placed upon'said top plate, said outer fasteners engaging the webs 10 and the heads 11 of said rails.
Retaining the rails 9 in engagement with the outer fasteners 8 are inner fasteners 12 of the splice bar construction, said inner fasteners having pins 13 extending into openings 14 provided therefor in the webs 10 of the rails. The inner fasteners correspond in length to the outer fasteners and the ends of said inner fasteners are provided with depending hooks 15 engaging under the lateral extensions 4 of the top plate 3. The inner fasteners 12, intermediate the ends thereof, are provided with lat eral extensions 16, and the under sides of said extensions are flat to rest upon the top plate 3 and the top of said extensions gradually swelled or enlarged to brace the inner fasteners. The extensions have depending L-shaped members 17 reinforced by webs 18. Engaging the members 17 are tapering keys or wedges 19 that are driven between the webs 7 and said members to force the inner fasteners into engagement with the rails and to lock the inner fasteners in engagement with the top plate 1. The tapering keys or wedges 19 are driven through openings 20 provided therefor in the wall 1-of the tie, and the wall 2 of said tie, at a point opposite the openings 20, is provided with openings 21 to accommodate screws 22 that enter the small ends of the keys or wedges 19 and retain said keys or wedges in engagement with the tie.
The walls of the tie can be easily embedded in the ballast of a roadbed, and the large opening 5 permits of ballast being placed in the tie to firmly anchor the same, after the inner fasteners have been shifted into engagement with the rails and locked in posit-ion. vVith the outer fasteners formed integral with the tie and the inner fasteners hooked under the lateral extensions 4 of the tie, it is impossible for the fasteners to become vertically displaced, while the pins 13 prevent longitudinal displacement of said rails.

In a metallic tie and rail fastener, the combination with rails having the Webs thereof provided With openings, of a tie having a top plate provided With a central longitudinal opening and longitudinal. slots, outer rail fasteners formed integral With the top plate of said tie and bracing the outer sides of said rails, inner rail fasteners bracing the inner sides of said rails and having the ends thereof provided With hooks to engage under the longitudinal edges of the top plate of said tie, pins carried by said inner fasteners and extending into the openings of the Webs of said rails, lateral extensions carried by said inner fasteners and extending over the slots in the top plate of said tie, and means located within said tie and adapted to lock said extensions in engagement With the top plate thereof. 7
2. In a metallic tie and rail fastener, the combination With rails, of a tie having a top plate provided With slots, outer fasteners carried by said tie for bracing the outer sides of said rails, inner fasteners bracing the inner sides of said rails and having the ends thereof provided with depending hooks to engage with the top plate of said tie, lateral extensions carried by said inner fasteners and extending over the slots in the top plate of said tie, depending L-shaped members carried by said extensions, and means arranged Within said tie and engaging said members for locking said extensions upon said tie.
3. In a metallic tie and rail fastener, the
combination with rails, of a tie having the top plate thereof provided With slots, Webs bracing the top plate of said tie, outer fasteners carried by the top plate of said tie for bracing the outer sides of said rails, inner fasteners bracing the inner sides of said rails and having depending hooks engaging under the longitudinal edges of the top plate of said tie, extensions carried by said inner fasteners, depending members carried by said extensions and extending into said tie, and means interposed between said members and the Webs of said tie for locking said inner fasteners upon the top plate of said tie and in engagement With said rails.
4. 111 a metallic tie and rail fastener the combination With rails, of a tie having the top plate thereof provided With slots, Webs bracing the top plate of said tie, outer fasteners carried by the top plate of said tie for bracing the outer sides of said rails, inner fasteners bracing the inner sides of said rails and having depending hooks engaging under the longitudinal edges of the top plate of said tie, extensions carried by said inner fasteners, depending members carried by said extensions and extending into said tie, means interposed between said members and the Webs of said tie for locking said inner fasteners upon the top plate of said tie and in engagement With said rails, said means including tapering keys having the small ends thereof locked in engagement with one of the Walls of said tie.
