Be it known that I, HARRY L. l-IEAoox, citizen of the United States of America, residing at Derry, in the county of Westmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ties and Rail-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to ties and rail fasteners, and the objects of my invention are to combine concrete and metal in a manner as to provide a strong and durable tie possessing sufficient strength and firmness to support the great weight of rolling stock, and to provide a tie having the necessary Vsuperficial area for the support of rails.
Other objects of my invention are to provide a tie made of standard materials and manufactured at a comparatively small cost, and to furnish a tie with fasteners that may be repeatedly adjusted to compensate for wear.
Further objects of my invention are to provide rail fasteners that will preserve the alinement of rails, obviate the necessity of using spikes and allow for the expansion and contraction of rails.
Vith the above and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construct-ion, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawings, wherein like numerals denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a portion of a tie and rail fastener in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the tie illust-rating a modilied form of fastener, Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view of the tie illustrating the preferred form of fastener, Fig. 1 is a similar view illustrating another modified form of fastener, Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the same, Fig. 6 is an end view of a tie provided with a further modification of the 1n vention, Fig. 7 is an enlarged perspective shown in Fig. 2, Fig. 9 is a perspective view of a detached locking member, and'Fig. 10 is a perspective view of a detached pin form- Speeification of Letters Patent.

A tie in accordance with this invention comprises an oblong box structure having a top plate 1, and inclined side walls 2 with the lower edges thereof bent inwardly, as at 3 to provide an open bottom 4. This struc ture corresponds in length to an ordinary tie and it is filled with concrete 5 or other durable material, the concrete extending from one end of the structure to the opposite end and completely Ifilling' the same with the exception of vertical recesses 6 that accommo- The recesses 6 aline with openings 7 formed in the top 1 of the tie, and the top of the tie, between said openings, provides a support for the base flanges 8 of a rail 9.
Arranged within the recesses 6 and extending out of the openings 7 are fasteners 10 having the lower ends thereof in proximity to the bottom of the tie, and cut away upon the outer sides, as at 10a, whereby the fasteners can be removed from the recesses without interfering with or striking the head of the rail 9. The upper ends of the fasteners are provided with inwardly projecting flanges 11 overhanging and engaging the base flanges 8 of the rails 9. These fianges are provided with openings 12 having the walls thereof screw threaded for set screws 13 employed for engaging the base flanges 8 and locking the fasteners in engagement therewith. The set screws have jam or lock nuts 14C for holding the set screws 13 in an adjusted position.
Each fastener has the outer side thereof provided with a vertical slot 15 and pivotally mounted in said slot by a transverse pin 16 is a locking member 17. The locking member 17 has a vertical projection 18,serving functionally as a handle, and a pin 19. Encircling the pin 19 is the outer convolution of a coiled compression spring 20 that has the inner convolution thereof housed within a socket 21 provided therefor in the vertical wall of the recess 15. 'The locking member 17 is adapted to extend into a cut away portion 22 of the tie, whereby said member can engage under the top 1 'of the metallic outer shell l5, thus permitting of the fastener being elevated and removed from the tie. The fastener can be easily snapped into engagement with the tie and the set screw 13 adjusted to lock the rails upon the tie.
In Figs. 2, 6, 8 and l0 of the drawings, there is illustrated a modification of the invention, wherein tapering keys 23, T-shaped in cross section, are driven into T-Shap'edV tapering slots 24 provided therefor in the upper ends of the fasteners, these keys beingused in lieu of the set screws 13. The webs of the keys are provided with openings Q5 to receive Cotter pins 26 employed for locking the keys within the fasteners.
A further modification of the invention is illustrated in Figs. 4L and 5, wherein the fasteners are designated 27 and made of a greater width than the fasteners 10. The inwardly projecting flanges l1 of the fasteners are braced by side bars 28 that eX- tend on to the base flanges 8 of the rail and brace the web thereof, as best shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings. This type of fastener is preferably used upon curved sections of track where it is necessary to brace the rails.
lVhile in the drawings there are illustrated the preferred embodiments of the invention, it is to be understood that the structural elements thereof are susceptible to such changes asfall within the scope of the appended claims.
Vhat I claim is l. In a tie and rail fastener, the combination with a rail, of an oblong metallic box structure having the flat top thereof supporting said rail andprovided with openings at the sides of said rail, concrete arranged in said structure and provided with recesses registering with the openings of said structure, said recesses having the outer walls thereof cut away, fasteners arranged in said recesses and having the upper ends thereof provided with flanges extending on to the base flanges of said rail, spring pressed pivoted locking members arranged in said fasteners and adapted to engage in the cut away portions of the concrete to lock said fasteners within the recess thereof, and means carried by the flanges of said fasteners for engaging and holding the base flanges of said rail.
2. In a tie and rail fastener, a rail, a metallic structure adapted to support said rail and having the top thereof provided with openings, concrete arranged in said structure and provided with recesses registering with`said openings, fasteners arranged in said recesses and having the upper ends thereof provided with flanges adapted to engage the flanges of said rail, means carried by the flanges of said fasteners for engaging and locking the base flanges of said rails upon said structure, and means pivotally arranged within said fasteners and adapted to engage in the outer walls of the recesses of said concrete for locking said fasteners within said recess.
