METALLIC RAILWAY-TIE.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. May 4, 1915.
Application filed August 12, 1914. Serial No. 856,438.
I To all whom it may concern:
,. Railway-Ties, of which the following is a Beit known that I, JOSEPH F. VALLIN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Audubon, Camden county, New Jersey, have invented certain Improvements in Metallic specification.
One object of'my invention is to make a simple and effective metallic tie, in which i A further object of the invention is to provide a tie which can be made of sheet; metal and which can be bent into the desired the ballast within the tie can be readily tamped and which will hold against longitudinal and lateral pressures.
shape.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1, is a perspective View of my improved railway tie; Fig. 2, is an end view showing the tie located in the ballast; Fig. 3, is a transverse sectional .view on the line aa, Fig. 4; with the railchair removed; Fig. 4, is a longitudinal sectional view, showing the rails and one of the rail chairs in position; Fig. 5, is a perspective View of one of the reinforcing plates; and Fig. 6, is a diagram plan view of the blank before being bent.
Referring to the drawing, 1 is the tie having a flat upper portion 2, inclined sides 3, and flanges 4 which are slightly inclined and turned up at the edges, as at 5, Fig. 3. These flanges are embedded in the ballast w, as shown in Fig. 2, preferably leaving the upper portion of the tie exposed.
The blank, Fig. 6, is bent on the lines y-y and 'vv to form the sides and the flanges, and at each end are sections which form the ends 6 of the tie. At each end of each side flange section are projections 7 which overlap the ends of the tie, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, andrivets, or other fastenings, secure these projections to the end plates 6 of the tie. The lower edges of the end plates 6 are bent inward as at 8 so as to engage the material under the tie and to hold the tie in position.
9, 9 are openings in the upper surface 2 of the tie, and 10, 10 are openings in the end plates of the tie. These openings are provided to allow for the introduction of the tamping tool into the body of the tie so as to insure the proper tamping of the ballast under the tie. Secured to the upper face of the tie are angle plates 11 which are spaced apart to receive the base of the chair 12.
13 is a rail which is mounted on the chair 12 and bolts'14= secure the rail and its chair to the angle plates 11. This construction of railway chair is fully described and claimed in an application for patent filed by me on a the 20th day of August 1914, under Serial No, 857,724. i .Other types of chairs may be used without departing from the essential features of the lIl VGIltlOIl and the rails may be secured directly to the tie, if found desirable.
In orderto retain the side members of the plate at the angle desired, I provide one or more spacers 15, consisting of a tube 16 and a bolt 17. The tubebears against the inside of the side members while the bolt 17 extends through the side members'and retains them against the end of the tube.
In the drawings I have shown one of these spacers at the center of the tie, but two or more may be used without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I preferably reinforce the tie directly under the chair by means of a reinforcing plate 18 having side flanges 19 which are riveted or otherwise secured to the side portions of the tie. The plates have end members 20 of any length desired, which extend downward and aid in holding the tie longitudinally in position on the ballast.
I claim 1. The combination in a railway tie, of a body portion; a flat top section; inclined sides; a flange beyond the sides at a different incline, said flange extending from one end of the tie to the other; end sections made integral with the body of the tie; and means for securing the end sections of the tie to the flanges.
2. The combination of a metallic tie having a flat upper portion; inclined side portions and flanges inclined at a different angle from the side portions, the edges of the flanges being turned upward, the flanges and the side portions extending from one 3. The combination in a metallic tie, of a body portion having inclined side members; means near each end of the tie for securing the rails to the tie; and reinforcing plates secured to the interior of the tie directly under the securing means for the rails, said reinforcing plates having transverse end members spaced apart and ex 4 upper surface and downwardly extending side members; laterally inclined flanges extending from the base of the side members so as to project under the ballast; tamping openings in the tie; and plates inside of the tie projecting downwardly into the ballast so that the ballast as it is tamped through the openings in the tie will be held by the downwardly projecting plates.
6. A metallic tie made from sheet metal, consisting of a body portion having inclined side portions and integral end sections; flanges on the side portionshaving upturned edges, the flanges having end projections bent over and secured to the end sections of the tie; a pair of angle plates near each end of the tie and securedto the upper surface thereof for receiving the means for attaching the rail to the tie; reinforcing plates secured to the underside of the tie directly under the angle plates, said reinforcing plates having downwardly turned end portions; and a spacer at or about the center of the tie and extending from one side portion to the other. a
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
