METALLIC TIE AND RAIL-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
"atented Aug. 22, 1911.
App1ieation filed May 10. 1911. Serial No. 626,263.
b all whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, PAUL Tune, a sub- Ject ot the King of lluugary, residing at l central vertical openings 5). The top plates Toleston, in the county of Lake and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ivtetallic Ties and Rail- Fasteners, of which the following is a sl iecitieation, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to metallic ties and l base flanges t; of the rails.
rail fasteners, and the objects of my inveution are, first, to provide a strong and the rable metallic tie for Stt1)]')0lftll1 rails; secend, to furnish the tie with a fastener li'or positively retaining the rails thereon; third, to provide a rail fastener that will n-event lateral and vertical displacement of rails relatively to a tie, and fourth, to provide a metallic tie that can be easily installed in a roadbed without the use oil skilled labor.
I attain the above objects by a mechanical construction to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure l is a plan of the tie and rail 'l astener in accordance with this invention, Fig. 9 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same, Fig. 3 is an end view of the tie, and Fig. r is a cross sectional view ol the same.
A tie in accordance with this invention comprises a base plate 1 and welded, brazed or otherwise mounted upon the base plate are two integral rail chairs 2 having rail. seats 3 for the base flanges l of rails 5. The
chairs 2 have longitudinal side walls (5 having the inner ends thereof terminating in a central web 7 secured to the base plate 'l. The inner ends of the walls 6 are connected by top plates 8 and these top plates have 8 are provided with seats 1t) 'lor inner rail fasteners 11v having vertical openings l2 adapted to register with the openings 9. rtrranged in the openings .l and 19 are verti' cal bolts l3 provided with nuts H. The in ner rail tasteners extend over the inner base flanges 4 ot the rails 5 and are provided with depending ribs '17, extending on to the seats l and bracing the inner edges of the The chairs 2 have integral over-hanging outer rail fasteners It engaging the outer base flanges it ot the rails I).
The ends ol' the plate 1 are enlarged and said plate can be embedded in concrete or the ballast ot a roadbed.
\Vhat I: claim in a metallic tie and rail Fastener, the combination with rails, oi a base plate having enlarged ends, chairs mounted upon said base plate adjacent to the ends thereof and having seats adapted to support the base llanges ot said rails, side walls carried by said chairs, a web mounted upon said base plate and connecting the inner ends of said walls, over-hanging outer rail fasteners formed integral with said chairs and engaging the outer base [hinges of said rails, inner rail Fasteners supported by said chairs and engaging the inner base tlanges ol said rails, and bolts and nuts adapted to secure said inner rail Fasteners to said chairs, substantially as described.
l n testimony whereot l atlix my signature in the resencc of two witnesses.
