Description

J. R. JENNINGS.
RAIL CHAIR.
, 191s. 1 ,079,768,, Patented Nov. 25, 1913.
A \I II .ll ll I'll. v I. llll l I a |.|.l| I V II UNITED STATES PATENT oFricE.
JOHN RAYMAN JENNINGS, or wnsr NEWTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
RAIL-CHAIR.
mounted upon a tie or other support for positively holding a rail, and to furnish the chair with novel means, as hereinafter set forth whereby it cannot creep or shift relatively to the tie or support upon which it is placed.
Other objects of my invent-ion are to pro vide a rail chair for rails wherein the rails have provision for preventing lateral displacement of the same upon the chair, and to provide a chair that can be used in connection with the present type of wooden ties to prevent the same from being unduly worn or agitated by rails, mounted thereon.
Further objects of my invention are to provide a rail chair that can be easily and quickly manufactured and installed without the use of skilled labor, and to accomplish the above results by a durable structure that is applicable to varioustypes of railways.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides'in the novel c5nstruc-' tion, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed. I
Reference will now be had to the drawing wherein igure l'is a side elevation of a chair 1n accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan of the same, Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a portion'of a rail adapted to be mounted upon the chair, Fig. 4 is a bottom plan of the chair, Fig. 5 is a bottom plan of the portion .of rail illustrated in Fig. 8,
Fig. 6 is a longitudinal sectional view of the rail chair,-and Fig. 7 is a cross sectional "viewof the same; ,A rail chairin iLCCOIdBJlCB Wlt-h this 1n-'- yention comprises a rectan lar plate 1 and the bottom of said plate is vprovided with Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 5, 1,913.
Patented Nov. 25, 1913. Serial No. 783,146.
i The top of the plate 1 is provided with transverse enlargements 3 constituting inner and outer rail braces for the base flanges 4 of a rail 5. The rail 5 has that" portion thereof which is mounted upon the plate 1 provided with transverse'serrations, corrugations or ribs 6 which are adapted to engage in a complemental surface 7 provided therefor upon the plate 1, between the enlargements 3.
The plate 1, at the enlargements 3 has openings 8 for spikes or other fastening means employed for retaining the plate upon a tie or other support.
In the construction of the track, it is preferable to arrange the plates 1 of the rails so that the vertexes of the ribs 2 will confront, consequently any spreading action of the rails of a track will simply tend to tighten the thereof. I
One embodiment of the invention has been illustrated but it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such variations and modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is j A rail chair comprising the combination with a rail having the lower face of its base flanges provided with transversely extending serrations, of a rectangular rail supporting plate provided with spaced transversely extending enlargements engaging the edges of the-base flange of a rail toprevent lateral shifting of the latter, said plate having its upper face, between said enlargements, formed with longitudinally extending serrations alternately disposed with respect to the serrations on the base of the rail, the serrations in the plate engaging in the serrations of the base to prevent longitudinal movement .of the rail, said plate -"provided with diagonally disposed o'penin s for the passage of spikes, and lon 'tu inal y "conver mg ribs integral *wit lower face 0 said plate and-V-shaped in the I plates 1 relativelyto the rails I cross section, said ribs merging into each other at their outer ends centrally of the lower face of the plate, one of said openings' arranged between said ribs and. the
ether of seid'openings arranged at the outer side of one of the ribs and near the enter f the latter. v
