To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE S. SMALL- WOOD, a citizen of United States, residing at Granite City, in the county of Madison, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railroad-Ties; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in rail ties and it has particular reference to a rail tie constructed of metal and designed to coact with the rail chair in firmly seating the rails.
The invention is designed to replace the wooden ties ordinarily employed by virtue of its inexpensiveness, simplicity and efliciency.
In connection with a tie of the above type the invention aims as a primary object to provide a novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, the details of which will appear in the course of the following description, in which reference is had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, like characters of reference designating similar parts throughout the several views wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of a tie constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section thereof. Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a section on the line 55 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a detailed perspective view of the major member of the rail chair, and Fig. 7 is a similar view of the minor member thereof Referring specifically to the accompanying drawings the numeral 1 designates a tie constructed in accordance with the present invention and the numeral 2 the rails seated thereon. The tie 1 is constructed similarly at each end thereof. The end portions upon which the rails 2 rest are of substantial H- shape in cross section as at 3 and are formed with inclined inner walls 4 extending downwardly on each side of a central longitudinal web 5 provided with the longitudinal side flanges 6 at its base and aflording a central portion of inverted IF-shape.
The ends 3 are constructed with central webs 7 alined with the web 5 and provided at their upper and lower edges with upper and lower parallel flanges 8 projecting on each side thereof, the flanges 8 conjointly constituting the top and bottom of the ends 3. On the upper surface of the ends 3 are lugs 10, and 11 which are preferably cast integral with the tie and have undercut bevel inner surfaces.
The flanges of the rails 2 are engaged by major and minor clamping members 15 and 16 having their outer edges extended obliquely and formed with an undercut bevel extending in opposite directions from the confronting edges of the respectively adjacent lugs 10 and 11. Between the lugs 10 and 11 and the respectively adjacent oblique edges of the members 15 and. 16 are wedge shaped blocks 13, having end projections 13 designed to be bent downwardly over the edge of the tie and prevent displacement of the blocks 13. The members 15 preferably extend beneath the treads of the rails and are provided with vertical strengthening ribs 14. The flanges 8 are reinforced by vertical webs or ribs 22 integral therewith and arranged in spaced parallel relation on each side of webs 7 and by vertical end walls 23.
The tie is applicable for use along all points of a track, including main lines, switches, and swings.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that simple and eflicient means are provided for accomplishing the objects of the invention, but, while the elements herein shown and described are well adapted to serve the functions set forth, it is obvious that various minor changes may be made in the proportions, shape, and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and. scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
