ROBERT WEIR, JR, OF MOKEESPORT, PENNSYLVANIA.
RAIL-JOINT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of LettersPatent No. 711,604, dated October 21, 1902. Application filed March 18', 1902.. Serial No. 98,737. (No model.)
useful improvements in rail-joints, and relates more particularly to that class wherein the use of nuts and bolts is entirely dispensed with.
The invention has for its further object a device of this character which will be ex tremely simple in construction, strong, du rable, comparativelyinexpensive to manufacture, and highly efficient in its use.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists'in the novel combina tion and arrangement of parts, to be herein after more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings,
forming a part of this specification, and wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views,in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved device. Fig. 2 is a top plan View thereof." Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the same.
the rails removed therefrom.
In the drawings the reference-numeral 1 represents the rails, said rails having their meeting ends formed on an angle, as shown, 7 at 2, and the sides of the web of the rails con'-' verge toward their ends, as seen in'Fig. 2
and shown by dotted lines in Fig. 3, to forma wedge. The rail-joint 3 comprises integral fish-plates 4, extending upwardly at an angle under the tread of the rail, as shown at 5. The upper edge of the fish-plates 4 extend at an angle, as shown at 6, and are beveled toward the center, as sho'wn'at 7 in Fig. 4 of the drawings, forming a wedge-shaped clamp at the meeting ends of the rails. The said fish-plates 4 are formed integral with the base 8, forming the chair portion, extending under' the underfaceof the base of the rail. It will be noted that the upper edges 6 and 7 of the fishplates are also beveled from end to end of the rail-joint, as shownin dotted lines in Fig. 1 of the drawings, thereby orming a wedge shaped clamp that' will eifectually bind both sections of the railstogether. An enlarged portion 9 is formed integral with the fish-plates near the center to give further strength and rigidity to the structure, the recesses 10 being formed in the sides of the railjoint, which are adapted to receive spikes or other suitable fastening means to fasten the device to the cross-ties.
When it is desired to bind the rails, their ends are inserted into the chair. face of the chair by reason of the central taper, as seen at 7 in Fig. 4, will register throughout with the tapered sides of the web and the upper beveled edge of the chair will enter the beveled portion in the under face of the tread of the rail, as seen in Fig. 3 and shown by dotted line in Fig. 1. Thus the rail will be securely held in position.
It will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention. I
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a rail-joint, the combination with the The inner plates having their'inner faces beveled and .formingwedge-shaped openings therebetween to engage the web of the rails, substantially as'described.
2. In a rail-joint, the combination of the rails having the ends of their web portions wedge-shaped and the under face of their treads adjacent the ends of the rails inclined inwardly, and fish-plates provided with an integral base, said fish-plates having their inner faces and upper edges. beveled toengage -'the web and inclined under face of the rails, fsubstantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my'namein the presence of'two' subscribing witnesses.
- ROBERT -WEIR, JR. In presence of- JOHN GROETZINGER, C. O. RAYMOND.
