NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB A. THOMPSON, OF MCDONALD, PENNSYLVANIA.
RAIL-JOINT.
SPIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 687,082, dated November 19, 1901.
Application filed May 10, 1901. Serial No. 59,641. (No model.)
To all wil/0711, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB A. THOMPSON, a citizen of the United Statesof America, residing at McDonald, in the county of Washington and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Joints, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in rail-joints, and more particularly to that class wherein lthe use of nuts and bolts is entirely dispensed with.
The invention has for its object to construct a rail-joint of the above-described class in a single piece of metal, wherein the ends of the two sections of rail will be Securely retained y and firmly held in position.
The present invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts, to be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specication, and wherein like numerals of reference indicate corre- Asponding parts throughout the several views, in which-- l Figure 1 is a side elevation of two sections of rails joined together with my improved rail-joint. Fig. 2 is an end view thereof. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4f is an enlarged perspective view of the rail-joint.
In the drawings the reference-numeral 1 indicates the rails, and 2 represents the baseplate, having secured on the upper face thereof centrally a rail-section 3, formed integral with said base-plate. The web of said railsection 3 is enlarged to a thickness equal to the tread of the rail, (indicated by the reference-numeral 4,) said enlarged web 4 carrying extending fish-plates 5, formed integral therewith, the ends of said fish-plates carrying beveled ends 6. An opening 7 is formed between 45 y the inner walls of the fish-plates that will engage the ends of the webs of the rail-sections. An opening 8 is also formed below the fishplate, between it and the base-plate 2. The lower faces of the integral fish-plates are bev- 5o eled, as indicated by the reference-numeral 9,
to receive the upper f ace of the base of the rail. The upper faces of the fish-plates are also beveled, as indicated by numeral 10, to correspond with the lower face of the tread, form- 55 ing a perfectjoint therebetween.
The many advantages obtained by the use of myimproved device will be readily apparent from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. 6o
It will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what 65 I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is=
1. In a rail-joint, a base-plate, a rail-section secured thereto, sh-plates made integral with said base-plate, beveled upper and lower 7o engaging faces on said fish-plates, the said fish-plates and base, having a space therebetween for the reception of the base of the rail, substantially as described.
2. A rail-joint which comprises a substan- 7 5 tially Hat base-plate carrying a rail-section on the upper face thereof, fish-plates formed integral with said rail-section and having a space between their lower ends and the baseplate, and upper beveled engaging faces on 8o said fish-plates, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afx my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JACOB- A. THOMPSON.
