METALLIC TIE AND RAIL-JOINT COMBINED.
SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent o. 701,194, dated'lVIay 27, 1902.

of which the following is a specification, ref` erence being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in metallic ties and railjoints combined, and has.for its object the provision of novel means, first, to construct a metallic tie that may be easily applied to the rail-joint and forms a part thereof, and,v
secondly, provide a rail-joint without nuts and bolts that will effectually retain the rails in proper position and prevent the same from spreading.
The present invention further aims to construct a rail-joint that will allow for the expansion and contraction of the rails dueto the changes of temperature.
The present invention also contemplates to set forth improvements in railway construction that will be extremely simple, strong, durable, comparatively inexpensive to mamifacture, and highly efficient in their use.
The invention has for a still'further object to entirely dispense with the present form of fish-plate and to employ a locking fish-plate on the outer side of the web of the rail and a locking-plate upon the inner side of the rail, forming a connection with the base thereof; furthermore, to provide novel means for both locking said fish-plate and locking-plate firmly in position.
The present invention also contemplates to provide a ballast for the rails, and, furthermore, to employ a cushioning-plate that will take up the jar caused by a heavy load hauled over the rails.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification and wherein like numerals of reference indicate correspondin g parts throughout the several views, in Which- Figure 1 is an end View of one of the rails, showing a portion-of my improved tie and rail-joint combined. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the same, showing the rail removed therefrom. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the locking-plate. Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 5 5 of Fig. 2 looking in the direction of the arrow. y
In the drawings the reference-numeral 1 indicates the rail, and 2 indicates the metallic cross-tie, which is preferably constructed of a channel-bar and is secured to the railjoint by means of rivets 3 0r other fastening means.
The reference-numeral 4 indicates the railjoint, having a downwardly-enlarged portion 5, said portion 5 being preferably fluted, as shown at 6, to form a corrugated lower face. The said rail-joint is also recessed, as shown at 7, forming a shoulder 8, to receive a locking fish-plate 9, which locking fish-plate bears against the outer face of the web of the rail, said locking fish-plate carrying on its under face a lug having anvopening formed therein, which lug communicates with the longitudinal opening v10, through which is driven the locking-wedge 11, the end of which may be locked or secured in any suitable manner.
The reference-numeral 12 indicates a locking-plate which likewise carries on its under face a lug 14, having an opening 15 formed therein to receive the locking'- wedge 16, which is similar in construction to the locking-Wedge l1.
The reference-numeral 17 indicates a cushioning-plate secured in the recess 1S in the railjoint, upon which the base of the rail rests.
The many advantages obtained'by the use of my improved device will be readily apparent from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
It will be noted that various changes-may be made in the details of construction Without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what Ioo I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with a metallic tie, a railjoint comprising an enlarged corrugated portion having contracted ends .one of which is Secured to the metallic tie, the upper face of said enlarged portion being out away forming shouldersLsaid enlarged portion having a pair of openings formed therein one on eaeh'sid'e ofthe rail-base, a looking fish-plate engaging one of said shoulders and one side of the rail head, web and base, an apertured lug on the under face of the said fish-plate and extending into one of said openings, a wedge engaging in said apertured lug and In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
