To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS E. BARTON, Sr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Ravenna, in the county of Portage and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Railroad-Ties and Rail- Fasteners, of which the following is a speci fication.
This invention relatesto railroad ties and rail fasteners adapted to be used in connection therewith and the object of the invention is to provide an improved metallic tie for railroad rails provided with simple and efficient means for holding the rails securely in position thereon.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts constituting the invention to be hereinafter specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a part hereof wherein is shown the preferred embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings in which similar reference numerals indicate like parts in the different figures: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a railroad tie embodying this invention provided with means for securing the rails in position thereon. Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation of the device shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a clamping member used for holding the rail; and, Figs. 4 and 5 perspective views respectively of a nut and bolt used in connection with this invention for holding the rail in position.
Referring specifically to the drawings, the tie comprises a member of such material as to be easily rolled and sheared. into suitable lengths to constitute a tie and also comprises a base 1 from which extends upwardly a web 2 bearing a head 3 all formed integral with each other. Arranged to be p0sitioned on the base 1 and held there preferably by being mounted in slots 4 out therein is a depending anchor 5, but it may be secured to the basel by other means if desired. The head 3 is adapted to sustain the rails and beneath the position occupied by the rail flanges the web is provided with a plurality of openings 6, 7, 8 and 9, the openings 6 and 7 being adjacent the sides of the flanges of one rail and the openings 8 and 9 Specification of Letters Patent.

near the other. Extending through the head of the tie and terminating in the openings 6, 7, 8 and 9 are a plurality of holes 10 for a purpose to be later described. Positioned on the head 3 are a pair of rails 11 and 12.
The clamping devices for holding the rails in position on the head of the tie vary somewhat in detail but all embrace substantially the same structure and each embodies a bolt for clamping the flange of the rail and a nut arranged to be positioned within one of the openings 6, 7, 8 or 9. These nuts designated by the reference numeral 13 each consist of a body portion 14 arranged. to be inserted in one of the openings in the Web of the tie and each has a centrally threaded aperture 15 to receive a clamping bolt 16 and are further provided with laterally-project ing lugs 17 arranged to bear against one of the side faces of the web 2 of the tie for holding them against unintentional revolution when the bolt is being manipulated.
The bolt 16 on the left side of the rail 11 in Fig. 2 is provided with a washer 18 having theunder face thereof inclined so that when one side thereof rests on the flange of the rail the other side rests on the upper surface of the head 3 of the tie, whereby when the bolt 16 is tightened it securely clamps the flange engaged by the washer 18 firmly on the head 3 of the tie.
The nut 13 which is positioned in the opening 7 on the opposite side of the rail is reversed in position with respect to the nut 13 in the opening 6 and receives a clamping bolt 16. which bears a clamping member 19 shown best in Fig. 3. This clamping member is provided with a laterallyrojecting lip 20 on one side and a downward y-turned flange 21 on the opposite side and is further provided with a central aperture 22 to receive the bolt 16. When positioned the inclined lip 20 engages the flange of the rail and the downwardly-turned flange 21 rests on the upper surface of the head 3 of the tie so that the central portion of the member through which extends the aperture 22 is slightly raised from contact with the upper surface of the head 3, affording to a certain extent a resilient action when the bolt 16 is tightened, causing the inclined face of the lip 20 to firmly engage the flange of the rail 11. The left side of the rail 12 is held securely in position by the head of the bolt 16 which is made with a cylindrical head large enough to engage the flange itself without the interposition of any member or washer and is drawn down securely against the flange by the manipulation of the bolt itself. The right side of the rail 12 is held in position through the medium of the clamping bolt 16 which is provided with a nut 13 similar to the nut shown in Fig. 4. Mounted on the upper face of the head 3 is a combined bracing and clamping member 23 provided with a laterally-extending lip 24 to engage the rail flange and with an upwardly-extending brace 25 which engages the lateral face of the web of the rail 12 for holding it more securely in position and is adapted to be used upon curves and other places where unusual lateral strain is imposed upon the rails.
It will be noted that while the nuts 13 are shown reversed in position in the openings 7 and 8, it will of course be obvious that all of the nuts may be positioned the same as shown in the openings 6 and 9 and any one of the various clamping members may be employed for holding the flanges of the rails on the head 3 or the bolts 16 may be provided with sufliciently large heads to engage the flange of the rail without employing auxiliary means for engaging the rail flanges.
It will be apparent that while the bolt 16 which holds the member 19 in engagement with the flange of the rail 11 is shown with an enlarged cylindrical head similar to the bolt 16 on the left side of the rail 12, a bolt similar to the bolt 16 having a square head may be used in lieu thereof; but it will be obvious in the instance of the bolt- 16 which engages the left flange of the rail 12 it must of necessity be provided with an enlarged cylindrical head to firmlyengage the flange of a rail itself, there being no intervening washer or member used in connection with this bolt head, the clamping function being performed entirely by the bolt head. Further, it will be obvious that the head of the bolt 16 last referred to should preferably be cylindrical in order to permit its rotation when screwed down.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A railroad tie and rail fastener comprising a tie embodying a head and a base with an upwardly-extending connecting web, said web provided with an opening ad jacent the flange of a rail seated on said tie, said tie having an opening'extending through the head thereof to the opening in the web, a nut positioned in the opening in said web provided with means for preventing rotation thereof and a bolt extending through the opening in the head of the tie engaging said nut provided with means for clamping the flange of a rail on said head.
2. A railroad tie and rail fastener comprising a tie embodying a head and a base with an upwardly-extending connecting web, said web provided with an opening adjacent the flange of a rail seated on said tie, said tie provided with an opening extending throu h the head thereof to the opening in the wefib, a nut positioned in the opening in said web provided with means to engage said web and prevent its rotation and a bolt extending through the opening in the head of the tie engaging said nut provided with means for clamping the flange of a rail on said head.
3. A railroad tie and rail fastener comprising a tie embodying a head and a base with an upwardly-extending connecting web, said web provided with an opening adjacent the flange of a rail seated on said tie, said tie provided with an opening extending through the head thereof to the opening in the web, a nut positioned in the opening in said. web provided with means for preventing its rotation, a bolt extending through the opening in the heady of the tie engaging said nut and means carried by said bolt for clamping the flange of a rail on said head.
4. A railroad tie and rail fastener comprising a tie embodying a head and a base with an upwardly-extending connecting web, said web provided with an opening adjacent the flange of a rail seated. on said tie, said tie provided with an opening extending through the head thereof to the opening in the web, a nut having a body portion adapted to be inserted in the opening in said web provided with latcrally-extending lugs engaging said web for preventing its rotation and a bolt extending through the opening in the head of the tie engaging said nut provided with means for clamping the flange of a rail on said head.
5. A railroad tie and rail fastener comprising a tie embodying a head and a base with an upwardly-extending connecting web, said web provided with an opening adjacent the flange of a rail seated on said tie, said tie provided with an opening extending through the head thereof to the opening in the web, a nut positioned in the openin gin said web provided with means for preventing its rotation, a bolt extending through the opening in the head of the tie engaging said nut and means carried by said belt for clamping the flange of a rail on said head, said means provided with an upwardly-extending brace engaging the rail for preventing lateral distortion thereof.
