Description

No. 806,358. I PATENTBD DB0. 5, 1905. n J. MGGRANIGHAN.
' RAILWAY TIE.
APPLIGATION FILED JULY 29.1905.
WITNESSES:
UNITED sTATEs yPATENT carros.
JOHN MCGRANIGHAN, OF ROXBORO, PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.'
RAI LWAY-Tl E To au whom zit may concern.-
boro, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Innprovements in Railway-Ties, 'of which the fol` lowing is a specification.
This invention relates to the use of stone blocks for supporting railway-rails; and it has for its leading purpose the production of improved means for the application of such blocks to supporting the rails and for connecting them together in the form of a tie, whereby there is provided a strong and enduring structure which can be constructed, assembled, and removed at acomparatively small cost.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved tie. Fig. 2 is a side elevation lthereof. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the half of a modified form of tie, and Fig. 4 isa plan view of a structure similar to and to be joined with that shown in Fig. 3 to form a tie.
In Figs. 1 and 2of the drawings granite or other stone blocks l, having the battered sides 1', are each provided with a metal band or strap 2 on the bottom and a metal band or strap 3 on the top thereof. Each of the bottom straps has a twist 2 therein adjacent to the inner end of the vblock to which it is attached, and projecting inwardly therefrom a vertically-disposed part 2, lying in a plane at right angles to the main portion of the strap engaging the bottom lof the block. Each of the top straps has its outer end turned back to form a hook or catch 3 and is provided with a twist 3" adjacent to the inner end of the block to which it is attached, beyond which extends downwardly and inwardly a projecting portion 3"', disposed in a vertical plane at right angles to the horizontally-disposed main portion of the strap engaging the top of the block and overlapping the corresponding projection 2". Bolts 4 pass through the respective blocks and' the straps thereon to hold these parts together and to clamp thereto the clips 5 for engaging the inner anges 6 of the `rails 6, the corresponding outer flanges of the rails being engaged by the hook strap endsB.
Specification of Letters Patent. l
Application filed July 29,1905. Serial No. 271,727.
Patented Dec. 5, 1905.
The rails thus secured to the blocks are tied together by the ov/erIapping band ends 2 and 3'", through which arepassed the bolts 7 In the modified construction shown in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawingsthe stone blocks I have thereon the wooden block 8, through which and the straps 2 and 3 pass the bolts 4 for clamping the clips 5 upon the respective anges 6' of the rails 6, the ends of the straps 2 being provided, respectively, with the twists 2 and overlapping extensions, 2" and the ends of the strap 3 being provided, respectively, with the twists 3and the extensions 3" overlapping the extensions 2", these parts being y bolted together, as previously described.
Having described my invention, I claim- 1. In a railway-tie, in combination with rails, blocks for supporting said rails, a bottom strap secured to each block for connecting them together, and a top strap secured to each block and having means for engaging and holding said rail, substantially as specified.
' v 2. In a railway-tie, in combination with rails, blocks for supporting said rails, top and bottom straps secured to said blocks and connected together, and means whereby said top straps engage and hold saidrails, substantially as specied.
3. In a railway-tie, in combination with rails, blocks for supporting said rails, andtop and bottom straps attached thereto and connected together, said top straps having hooks thereon for engaging said rails, substantially as specified. y'
4. In a railway-tie, in combination with rails, blocks for supporting said rails, and straps secured together and to the tops and bottoms of said blocks, said straps having twists therein providing for horizontally-disposed portions to engage said blocks and vertically-disposed portions to engage said straps together, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand, this27th day of July, l1905, in the presence of the subscribing witnesses.
JOHN MCGRANIGHAN.
