To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, ELIGAH H. FIELD and WILLIAM F. WALKER, citizens of the United States, residing at Suwanee, in the county of Gwinnett, State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Railroad Angle- Bar, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in rail angle bar and more particularly to a rail bar to which one of the fish plates is hingedly secured.
An object of the present invention is to provide a rail bar including a side or fish plate formed integral therewith and to hingedly secure the opposite side or fish plate to the base of the device.
A further object is to provide a base plate, the corners of which are provided with upstanding lugs or bosses through which eX- tend the spike receiving openings, it being noted that in this class of devices the base is usually formed of some thin material and unless some means such as the bosses herein described be provided the base of the device will in time out through the spikes and allow the rails to shift and spread as it is thought will be readily apparent.
A further object is to provide a rail bar including a base plate and formed integral with one edge thereof an upstanding flanged fish plate and oppositely disposed with relation thereto and embracing the rail web and spaced therebetween a detachable fish plate which interlocks with the bosses or lugs of the base plate and is held at its lower point thereby. In combination with the foregoing there is a reinforcing flange hingedly secured along its outer edge to the edge of the base plate and secured with a filler interposed therebetween, to the detachable fish plate last mentioned.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter de scribed and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings accompanying this specification and forming a part thereof, the preferable form of our invention has been illustrated, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a rail with our improved rail angle secured thereto. Fig. 2 is a similar view taken from the opposite side thereof. Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is an end elevation of our improved device with a rail secured thereto. Fig. 5 is a top plan view thereof.
Referring to the drawings in which simi lar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, a wide flat base plate 6 is provided at its four corners with the bosses 7 7 and extending centrally through which are the openings 8. The base plate 6 conforming to the usual construction of rail angle bar is composed of thin material and by reason of the en larged bosses 7 7 a sufficient area of contact between the railroad spikes and the base plate will be had, preventing the cutting of the spikes due to the tendency of the entire rail hinged angle bar and rails to shift.
Extending along one edge of the base plate 6 and preferably formed integral therewith is the upstanding side plate 9 which, as will be apparent by a reference to the drawings, conforms along its inner face to the outer contour of the rail with which it contacts and lies tangential thereto. The side plate 9 thus contacts with the base, web and under edge of the rail head and as long as the rail is held in such position will successfully prevent any vertical movements thereof.
The upstanding bosses 7 which are located upon the opposite edge to which. the side plate 9 is secured are cylindrical in outline as illustrated in Fig. 4 and somewhat lengthened so as to provide suitable shoulders over which the detachable side plate 10 may fit and engage. The detachable side plate 10 as shown in Fig. 5 has the central portion thereof removed while the portion adjacent thereto extends out to the extreme edge of the base plate. The side plate 10 acting in a manner similar to the side plate 9 conforms to the outline of the rail against which it contacts and against which it is held by its engagement with the cylindrical bosses 7. Thus the detachable side plate 10 is rigidly held at its outer edge against lateral shifting.
The base plate 6 at the central portion of one side edge is bent upwardly as at 11 and provided with the slot 12 adjacent thereto. The slot 12 is spaced a slight distance from the edge of the plate so that a thin narrow strip 13 is formed and about which is bent or curled the extreme end 1 1 of an auxiliary side plate 15. This auxiliary side plate 15 is hingedly secured to the base plate 6 and positioned above the general level thereof so that there will be no projections extending beneath the general level of the bottom of the base plate A filler 16 of any suitable material is positioned between the side plate 10 and the auxiliary side plate 15, thus holding them spaced a distance apart and due to the rigid material of which the filler is formed, holding the same rigidly in such relation. In order to securely lock the various parts in their required positions, the bolts 17 are provided which extend through the side plate 9, detachable side plate 10, filler 16 and the auxiliary hinged side plate 15. Thus the bolts in connection with the nuts 18 are adapted to engage the various parts just mentioned and to hold the same in rigid relation with the result that a most secure and trustworthy juncture will be formed between the meeting ends of two rails and furthermore the said rails will be properly anchored to the ties. The auxiliary hinged side plate 15 being spaced from the detachable side plate 10 is adapted to strengthen the same and prevent the outward movement of the top portion thereof. Thus it will be apparent that the top and bottom of the detachable side plate 10 are securely braced against shifting.
Having thus fully described the invention, what we claim to be new and original with us is 1. An angle bar comprising a base plate, a side plate carried thereby and rigid with respect thereto, a detachable side plate, means for holding the same against shifting with respect to the said base plate, an auxiliary side plate secured to the said base plate, a filler interposed between the said detachable side plate and the said auxiliary side plate.
2. An angle bar comprising a base plate, bosses disposed along the edges thereof and projecting upwardly therefrom and provided with openings extending therethrough, said bosses afi'ording a wide area of contact between the base plate and rail spikes, a
side plate carried by the said base plate and rigid with respect thereto, a detachable side plate interlocking with the said base plate at its lower edge and held against movement thereby, an auxiliary side plate secured to the said base plate and bracing the upper extremity of said detachable side plate.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination of a base plate, a side plate carried thereby and contacting with the side of a rail a detachable side plate disposed upon the opposite side of the said rail contacting therewith, means disposed upon the said side plate interlocking with the said detachable base plate and holding the lower edge against relative motion with respect thereto, an auxiliary side plate secured to the said base plate, a filler positioned between the said detachable side plate and said auxiliary side plate, and means extending through the said side plates and filler, supporting the same in rigid relation.

In a device of the class described, the combination of a base plate, upstanding bosses along the edges thereof, a side plate carried by said base plate and rigid with respect thereto, a detachable side plate interlocking with the said bosses and held against relative motion thereby, a portion of said base plate offset in an upward manner, an auxiliary side plate engaging the offset portion of said base plate, a filler interposed between the said detachable side plate and said auxiliary side plate, means extending through the said side plates and filler adapted to hold the same in rigid relation, said bosses securing a wide area of contact between the tie spikes and said base plate.
5. An angle bar including a base plate, a side plate carried thereby and rigid with respect thereto, a portion of said base plate offset in an upward direction, a detachable side plate interlocking with the said base plate and held against relative motion with respect thereto, an auxiliary side plate hingedly secured to the ofiset portion of said base plate, a filler interposed between the auxiliary and detachable side plates, and means extending through the said side plates and filler adapted to hold the same in rigid relation.

In a device of the class described, the combination of a base plate, a side plate carried thereby and rigid with respect thereto, the central portion of one side of said base plate offset in an upward manner and provided with a slot adjacent thereto, said base plate provided with upwardly extending bosses, a detachable side plate provided with openings adjacent the edges thereof, said openings fitting over and interlocking with the said bosses, an auxiliary side plate hingedly engaging a portion of said base plate adjacent the said slots in the ofi'set portion thereof a filler in as our own, We have hereto affixed our sigterposed between the said detachable and natures in the presence of two Witnesses. 1o auxiliary side plates and means extending ELIGAH H.
