RAIL FASTENER AND TIE.
Specification of Ijetters Patent.
PatentedApr. 11,1916.
Application filed May 12, 1915. Serial No. 27,588.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RoBER'rH. WORRELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Surveyor, in the county of Raleigh and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail Fasteners and Ties; and I do hereby de.
clare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which 7 embodies in its construction means for engaging and securing the outer sides of the rails. V
The invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings :-Figure 1 is a plan of a railwaytie and rail fastener constructed in accordance with my invention, and showing the rails. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same with the rails shown in section. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view on the plane indicated by the line 14 of Fig. 1, and on a larger scale. Fig. 5 is a detail longitudinal sectional view, also on a larger scale, and on the plane indicated by the line 5-5 of Fig. 1. 7
My improved tie 1 is made of any suitable metal and comprises a horizontal web or top 2 and downturned side flanges 3 which are adapted to be engaged in the road bed.
Near the ends of the tie are upwardly and. inwardly inclined rail securing lugs 4 which are integral with the tie, are struck up therefrom and are adapted to bear on the outer sides of the bases of the rails A. At a suitable distance from the inner sides of the rail bases the tie is provided with openings 5 in which are arranged the arched portions 6 of keepers 7, which are substantially of inverted U-shape and are provided at the lower ends of their vertical arms 8 with outturned arms 9 which bear against the under side of the web or top 2 of the tie and are secured thereto by rivets 10. Since the arched portions of the keepers pass upwardly through and fit in the openings 5 it will be noted that said keepers are very securely fastened to the tie. I also provide locking arms 11 which are arranged on the upper slde of the tie, are longitudinally slidable in and through thekeepers 6 and have beveled or undercut inner ends 12 adapted to bear on the inner base flanges of the rails to secure the latter on the tie, the said locking arms being held in engaged position with the rails, by means of wedge shaped keys 13 which are driven through Q openings 14 in the locking arms 11.
By first removing the keys, the locking arms 11 may be readily detached from the" arms and enable the rails to be lifted from the tie when desired.
My improved tie is of cheap and simple construction, and extremely strong and durable and in connection with the rail fastening devices serves to securely fasten the rails thereon so that the rails cannot spread. I
Having thusdescribed my invention, I claim A metal railway tie comprising a horizontal web portion, a vertical depending side portion, said web portion having fixed lugs in its upper face at opposite ends thereof adapted to engage one side of the rail base therein, said web also provided with an opening adjacent said fixed lug, a
U-shaped keeper having its arms bent laterally in opposite direction, the web portion of said keeper extended up through the opening in the top of the tie and its laterally extended arm engaging the under face of the tie and secured thereto, a tapered locking arm having the .under side at one end inclined inserted through the U-shaped keeper, the inclined portions engaging the upper face of the rail base adjacent the portion engaged by the fixed lugs, said arm In testimony whereof I afiix my signature provided adjacent its inclined end with a in presence of two Witnesses.
slot a pin driven through said slot and beaiing against the side of the lug which ROBERT WVORRELL 5 is opposite the rail for preventing any movement of the same, substantially as set forth.
copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
Washington, D. 0.
