RAIL-EASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application led March 14, 1912. Serial N o. 683,807.
Patented Aug. 13, 1912.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE HALINKA, a subject of the King of. Hun ary, residing at tark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had .therein to the accompanying drawing.- l
This .invention relates to rail fasteners, and the objects of my invention are, rst, to obviate the necessity of using spikes as a fastening meansfor. rails; second, to pro` a fastener that will preserve the alinement longitudinal and ventifastener that is inexpensive to-manufacture and highly eflicient. for the purposetgfiir which itis intended? I attain the above objects by a mechanical construction that will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will lnow be had tothe drawing, wherein I I provided, with sets of and engaging in these-openings are tlie illsI fastener members 7.
Figure l i'sfa'y plan of the rail .fastener in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a .Y side lelevation of the same, partly broken laway and partly in sectlon, vperspective view of one of the fasteners.
and Fig. 3 is a The reference numeral l denotes a portion of a tie of the ordinary and well known construction, and this tie can be made of wood or metal to provide a firm support for a rail 2. The rail vertical openi s 4 5 of hooks 6 carried by The fastener members 7 are arranged against the lohgitudinal edges ofthe flanges durable and not liable vflanges/3 Will be held 2 has the basel flanges 3 thereof 3 and the hooks 6 are carried by the ends thereof. Each fastener, intermediate the ends thereof, has the outer edge providedv with a. horizontal apertured extension or eye 8 and this eye is retained upon the tie 1 by the head 9 of a rivet or bolt 10 that passes through the tie. The rivets or ybolts 10 retain the fasteners in sition against the lon itudinal edges of t e flanges 3, and the hoo s 6 anchor the base flanges 3, of the rail relatively to said fasteners, said hooks preventing vertical displacement, while the fasteners 7 prevent lateral displacement.
The fasteners can be made of light and durable metal, and it is preferable to oppositely disposeth'e same, whereby the base at opposite points and the rail prevented from shifting upon the surface of the tie.
In a rail fastener, the combination with av tie, and a rail-supported by said tie and having the .base flanges thereof provided with sets of openings, of fasteners arranged against the longltudinal edges of the flanges of said rail, hooks carried by the ends of said fasteners and having the bills thereof engaging in the openings of the base flanges of said rails, apertured extensions carried by the outer edges of said fasteners intermediate the ends thereof, and bolts mounted in said tie an'd having the heads thereof engaging in said apertured extensions to retain said fasteners upon said tie.
In testimony in the presence of two witnesses.
