RAIL-BRACE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 21, 1914. Serial No. 862,733.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL F. LINDSTROM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Garrison, in the county of Pottawatomie and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail- Braces; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in railroad appliances and more particularly to a bridle or brace that may be readily attached to rails between ties or at any desired point and will serve to prevent spreading of the rails.
Another object of importance is to provide a brace that may be readily attached without the necessity of the employment of bolts or other fastening elements and which is inexpensive to manufacture.
The above and additional objects are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specification and then more particularly pointed out in the claim.
With reference to the drawings, wherein I have illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention as it is reduced to practice, and throughout the several views of which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts,
Figure 1 is a fragmentary plan view of a track showing my improved brace applied to I the rails, and
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the brace in position.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, 3 designates the rails and 4 the ties of a track.
My improved brace comprises coiiperating brace members designated 5 and 6 as entireties. Each of these members consists of a rectangular base plate having its outer end bent inwardly back upon itself to provide an overhanging rail base clamping jaw 7 which engages the outer half of'therrail bases. The inner edges of the base of the rectangular plate-forming the body portions of the members 5 and 6 are disposed in engagement with each other as clearly shown in Fig. 2 in the drawings. These members 5 and 6 are constructed of malleable iron or any other suitable metal. Mounted upon the members 5 and 6 upon the body portions thereof is a connecting plate 8 that is rectangular and disposed flush along its longitudinal edges with the corresponding edges of the members 5 and 6. The members 5 and 6 are provided with openings I which aline with openings in the plate 8 and bolts or other suitable fastening elements 9 are inserted through said alined openings. Nuts 10 are turned on the bolts and cotter or other suitable pins 11 are inserted transversely through the threaded ends of the bolts to prevent accidental derangement of the nuts. The ends of the connecting plates 8 overlap the inner halves of the rail bases a slight distance and to provide for such Patented Mar. 6, 1917;
an arrangement small wedge plates 12 are intightening the nuts 10 a clamping action between the members 5 and 6 and plates 8 upon the rails is effected.
It will be readily seen that my improved brace may be easily and quickly attached to rails and will serve to effectively hold them against creeping or spreading.
In practice, I have found that the form of my invention, illustrated in the drawings and referred to in the above description, as the preferred embodiment, is the most eflicient and practical; yet realizing that the conditions concurrent with the adoption of my device will necessarily vary, I desire to emphasize the fact that various minor changes in details of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, when required, without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention, asset forth.
What I claim is A rail brace comprising a pair of longitudinally alined sections, having their inner ends in abutting engagement, outer rail base clamping members formed on the outer ends of said sections, a plate for securing said sections together, said plate being formed from spring metal and located upon the upper sides of said sections, bolts-en-j' members down into and hold them in enfrom having any inward movements with 19 gagement with the rail bases, and wedge relation to each other.
shaped members mounted between said In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature plates and the inner clamping members and in presence of two witnesses.
between the last named bolts and the rail bases, said wedge shaped members being CARL LINDSTROM' held in position by the inner clamping Witnesses: members and said last named bolts, and said S. H. KUNAU, wedge shaped members preventing the rails W. H. PIERCE.
Gopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents Washington, D. G.
