RAILWAY-TIE AND FASTENER.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED A. JENSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Merrill, in the county of Lincoln and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway-Ties and Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip" tion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The primary object of this invention is to admit of the companion rails of a track being conveniently and expeditiously clamped in position on a tie and positively held against spreading.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a novel type of metallic tie for supporting the rails and novel rail-fastening means which have permanent and slidable connection with the tie and can be readily moved into and out of engagement with the rail.
Other objects will appear and be better understood from that embodiment of my invention of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part thereof, in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the tie,
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof and of the rail-fastening member, showing the latter partly in section,
Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 41 is a side elevation of a modified form of the tie.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the numeral 1 designates, as an entirety, the preferred form of tie, having its body portion formed of a single blank of metal bent longitudinally upon itself to provide a vertical stem 2, and having the upper edges of the sides of the stem, deflected laterally to provide flanges 3. The sides of the tie are spaced from each other, at a point centrally of the tie body, so as to provide a recess 1, and the upper surfaces of the flanges 3 are serrated, as shown at 5.
Mounted upon the flanges 8 is an elongated plate 6, which has its under surface serrated, as shown at 7 so as to coiiperate with the serrated surface 5 on flanges 3 to serve as means for preventing longitudinal move- Speeification of Letters'latent.

ment of the plate 6 on the flanges 3. The plate 6 is provided with a central opening 8,
which registers with the recess 4 and the 12 is provided with a longitudinal raised portion 13, formed centrally thereon to provide a housing, and the said plate 12 is provided with slots 14, which register with similar slots formed in the plate 6 and with openings in the flanges 3, for the accommodation of bolts 15, which have nuts 16 turned on their lower ends and adjustable against the under side of the flanges 3.
Slidably mounted within the raised por tion 18 on the plate 12 is a pair of keys 16. These keys 16 cooperate with the portions 9 on the plate 6 for anchoring the rails 11 in position, and, as shown more particularly in Fig. 2, the outer. ends of these fasteners 16 are reduced to provide the flanges 17, which engage over the inner longitudinal edges of the base flanges of the railsll.
The keys or fasteners 16 are moved to operative position by means of a manipulating member 18. This manipulating member 18 includes a triangular shaped base 19 and a threaded stem 20. The base 19 overlies the recess 4: in the tie body, and when the manipulating member is in inoperative position, the base is received by the said recess. hen the member 18 is moved upwardly, the inclined sides thereon engage the adjacent ends of the keys 16, so as to move the keys 16 outwardly or in the direction of the rails 11, the inner ends of the keys 16 being beveled to agree with the beveled or inclined sides of the base flange 19. When the manipulating member 18 is in the position shown. in Fig. 2 the sides of the base 19 engage the beveled sides of the opening 8 so as to limit the upward movement of the inanipulating member, and when the manipulating member is inoperative position the stem 20 thereon projects through an opening in the raised portion 13 and has a. nut 21 threadedly mounted thereon and adjustable against the raisedportion 13 so as to hold the manipulating member 18 in operative position.
The tie shown in Fig. 4: consists of a body 22, formed in the same manner as the body of the tie shown in Fig. 1, and has its upper surface thereof serrated, as shown at 23.
The plate 26 is superposed on the tie body 22 and has'its under side serrated to cooperate with serrated surface 23 on the upper surface of the tie body, and the said plate 26 has a longitudinally extending raised portion 27, similar to the raised portion 13 of the plate 12 as shownin Figs. 1 and 2, for the reception of slida-ble locking keys 28, which are identical with the keys 16 shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing. The walls of the body 22 are spaced from each other, at a medial point, as shown at 29 to provide a central recess for the accommodation of the triangular-1y shaped base carried by the lower end of the manipulating member 29 similar to the manipulating member 18, shown in Fig. 2, and which manipulating member is adapted, when moved upwardly, to slide the keys 28 outwardly and into'engagement with the inner flanges of the rails. The opposite ends of the body 22 are formed to provide the raised portions 31, the inner edges of which have extensions 82 formed'thereon to engage over the outer' longitudinal edges of the base flanges of the rail to hold the rail in operative position.
When it is desired to release the rails from the structureshown in either the preferred ormodified form, the nuts on the stems of the manipulating members are removed and the members moved inwardly so as to release the rail-engaging keys. After this operation the said keys are moved in the direction of each other by any suitable tool, so asto release the rails and admit of the same being removed from the tie body.

1. The combination with a rail tie body having rail engaging members located at the opposite ends thereof, and adapted to engage the outer sides of the rail, a housing interposed between the rail engaging members and having its opposite ends opened and spaced from the rail engaging members, means slidably mounted within the housing and operable through the ends thereof, and adapted when slid in one direction to engage the inner side of the flange of the rail, and means operable within the housing for moving the first mentioned means to operative position.
2. The combination with a rail tie body having a central recess therein, and a housing associated with the upper side of the tie body having its interior communicating with the recess, the upper wall thereof provided with an opening registering with the recess of the tie body, the said housing having its opposite ends open, rail engaging members slidably mounted within the housing and operable through the open ends of the housing, means comprising a vertically movable plate having inclined sides adapted when the plate is moved upwardly to engage the rail engaging members and move the members outwardly, the said plate being adapted when moved downwardly to be received by the recess in the tie body, so as to admit of the rail engaging members being moved inwardly, a threaded stem carried by the plate and slidably extending through the opening in the upper wall of the housing, and a nut turned on the stem.
