Description
J. JENDRAL. METALLIC TIE AND RAIL FASTENER.
Patented Mar. 26, 1912.
I INVENTOR all j776ZI"0/&.
ATTORNEYS WITH STATES ATENT OFFICE.
JACOB JENIDRAL, OF BARNESBORO, PENNSYLVANIA.
METALLIC TIE AND RAIL-FASTENER.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jacon Jnxnuan, a subj ect of the Emperor of Austria-H11ngary, residing at Barnesboro, in the county of Cambria and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful. Improvements in Metallic Ties and Rail-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to metallic tie and rail fasteners, and the objects of my invention are to provide a strong and durable metallic tie that can be easily and quickly anchored in the ballast of a roadbed, and to furnish the tie with novel fasteners for retaining rails upon a tie, whereby the rails cannot become laterally or vertically displaced.
Further objects of my invention are to furnish a tie with swiveled fasteners that can be swung into and out of engagement with a rail to permit of a rail being removed, and to provide fasteners that can be adjusted to hold rails upon a tie with said rails positioned at an acute or obtuse angle relatively to the tie.
lVith the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the novel construc tion, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of the tie. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View of a portion of the tie showing the fasteners, and the wrench in connection with one of said fasteners. Fig. 3 is a detailed sectional View of a portion of the wrench used in connection with the fastener, and Fig. 4 is a plan of a portion of the tie and the fasteners thereof.
A metallic tie in accordance with this invention comprises an oblong body 1 that is rectangular in plan and V-shaped in cross section, the shape of said body permitting of the tie being firmly anchored in a roadbed. The tie adjacent to each end thereof is provided with a transverse rail seat 2 and fastener seats 3, the seats 3 having sockets 4L with the walls thereof screw threaded. At
Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 664,904.
the outer edges of the seats 3 are enlargements presenting semicircular walls 6 that are provided with equally spaced angularly disposed sockets 7.
Movably mounted upon the seats 3 by screw bolts 8 are fasteners 9. The inner end of the fasteners are adapted to extend over onto the base flanges 10 of a rail 11 located upon the seat 2. These fasteners prevent vertical displacement of a rail and the walls 12 of the seat 2 prevent lateral displacement.
The outer ends of the fasteners 9 are provided with angularly disposed recesses 13 and located in said recesses are locking pins let adapted to extend into the sockets 7 to hold the fasteners in adjusted position. The inner ends of the pins 14. are reduced, as at 15 and encircling the reduced ends of said pins are coiled compression springs 16 located in the inner ends of the recesses 13. The walls of the fasteners 9 are slotted, as at 17 for the ends of a guide rod 18, carried by each of the locking pins 14. The guide rod 18 within the slots 17 limits the movement of the locking pins 14:.
For simultaneously releasing and shifting the fastener a claw wrench 19 is employed. The claw 20 of said wrench engages the side walls of the fastener and said claw has recesses 21 to receive the ends of the rod 18. When the wrench is pushed into engagement with the fastener, the ends of the rod 18 protruding into the recesses 21 are shifted by the walls of said recesses, and after the locking pins have been withdrawn from the sockets 7, the wrench 19 can be swung to move the fastener out of engagement with the rail.
It is through the medium of the sockets 7 that the fastener can be adjusted at various angles to the tie for engaging rails that are disposed at an acute angle to said tie.
lVhat I claim is In a metallic tie and rail fastener, an 0blong metallic body V-shaped in cross section and having rail seats adjacent to the ends thereof and fastener seats at the sides of said rail seats, enlargements at the outer sides of said fastener seats and having semicircular walls provided with angularly disposed sockets, fasteners swiveled upon said teners can be swung upon the seats of said tie.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of tWo Witnesses.
JACOB JENDRAL.
