METALLIC RAILROADTIE AND RALCLAMZ.
Specification of Letters latent.
Patented Novc l.,
Application filed December 18', 190'?. Serial No. 466,938.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that L Jorrit GALAMBos, e citizen of the United States, residing,l at Lorain, in the county or Lorain and State of Chio, have invented certain new and usefnl improvements in Metallic Railroad-Ties and Rail-Clamps, of which the followingis specification.
This invention relates to rail 't'es partiei ularly hollow metallic ties and rail holders or clamps for use with such ties.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide e tie of the above type, which is strong, durablel and can he easily und cheaply manufactured.
A lrther object is to provide n reil clamptwhich will hold the rail lirnily to the metallic tie,'a11d which will be easily placed in position without requiring its insertionfroin the open end of the tie.
invention consists in certain novel details of construction and combination and arrangement of parts7 which will be described in the specification und set forth in the appended claims.
F or a better understanding or' iny inveir tion reference is hud to the accompanying drawings in which- Figure l is a section taken transversely of the rails and longitudinally through a tie showing iny improved clzunp in side elevetion, ports being broken nwey; Fig. S2y is n transverse section of the tie showing the cleinp in end elevation and n portion of the rail in side elevation; Fig. 3 4is u section teken 'transversely through the vnil end cleinp, 'the parts being' slightly enlarged; and Fig. It is :i perspective view or one of the clamping' members.
Referring now to the gures of the drziw ing, l() represents my improved railroad tie which is hollow and is formed of n single sheet or plete of instel. The top l und bottoni 10b of the tie are parallel und the si des 10 and 10d are inclined outward. The bottom is not continuous but is formed by bending the opposite sides toward each other to the center where said perte engage. The free ends l0e and lOf of the sheet or plate nre within the tie, extendinvf from the engaging with n lug or projection which entends respectivelyin the two angles oined by the top and the two inclined sides. The angles formed by the sides 10C und l0 and the free ends l()e and l0i with the bottoni nre preferably equal so that the interior of the tie is divided into three substantially equal isoseelcs triangles. Thus it will be seen that e braced and trussed tie or greet strength is formed from n. single sheet or plate of metal7 since the free end portions within the tie serve as struts to sustain the weight on thetie equally with the sides.
The rail holders or clamps euch consists of a bolt ll which extends within the tie across the bottom of the reil and has its ends projectingF upward on opposite sides thereof through suitable openings or slots l2 in the top of the tie.- and clamping nienibers 13 mounted on the ends oit' the `bolt. The clamping members 13 ure provided over und bears upon the ,delige of the rail and below the lug or projection with r. portion 13b which extends downward intonfhe opening. The heel; or rear side olf the clamping member is preferably roundel und this rounded portion beers upon the tie7 preferably on the edge of the opening therein. The top of the clamping ineniher is provided with n slightly elongated opening` through which the end of the holt ein tends and this opening` is continued in the lower portion i3 in the Vi'forni or" e slot. or passageway v `ch is open toward the ruil and inclines slight A inward the bottoni er the slot forming sezi'- i3d for trie holt. The clamping nieinh'er i3 hns two suhstrintinlly parallel sir ,Se which have notches or recesses 13" which receive the iinnge of the ruil.
rl`he holt il is orovieed horizontal eentrnl portion li against the lower of the top oi lthe tie5 with two portions l'lb which wtcnd :it ongles of about 4:5 degrees und h end portions 1l which extend substantially vertically up ward through the top of the tie. @ne oi these ends is in this case7 provided with an integral head lld 'which upon the upper face of the clamping nieinher and the other is threaded and receives e nutI il@ which also bears on the tace of the corre I in the tie and inclined upwardly and out.
spending clamping member With this construction it is unneeessarv to insert the bolt from the end of the tic, but alter slipping one clamping, member thereon, the threaded end is inserted in the opening on one side ot the rail, and by pivoting said clamping member about the end otl the lug or proyection 131l on the flange ot' the rail, the opposite end o't' 'the bolt can be easily swung upward through the opposite opening, the rounded portion of the claniiiiing member permitting such movement ot the bolt. The other clai'nping member can then be inserted on the free end ot tliebolt and the whole tight'.- Acned in position by tightening the nut.
lt will be seen that when the nut is tightened, not only will the lugs or projections' 13"'-be brought down tightlyl upon the llanges, but on account ot the rounded backs oli the clamping members, there is a wedging action which forces the claniping ii'iembers inward until the faces ol the bolts tightly engage the .flanges ot" the rail` so that; lateral play ot the rail is elin'iinated. lhe l'act that the flanges of the rail bear against the ends of the bolt rather than the clamping members is a, decided advantage for the reason that the lugs or projections 13L can be brought down on the tlai'igcs ot the rail and at the same time the sides or edges et the flanges of the rail are tightly clamped regz'lrdless ot whether the holes or slots in the tie are accurately located or whether the clai'nping members are of uniform size or shape.
lt will be seen that with the clamping means above described the rails will be held tightly to the ties and that there can be no' downward nioven'ient o 't the rail. will only draw the elaniping members and bolts more l tightly against the rail. lt; will not, be neeessary that the clamping members 1?) be arranged directly opposite each other, butthey may be staggered or diagonally arranged. lt', will also be apparent thatthe above clamping means can be employed 'for holding in position` 'frogs or other special constructions, a longer bolt only being necessary.
l do not desire to be contined to the exac details shown but aim in my claims to cover all modifications which do not involve a deH parture Yfrom the spirit and scope ot my invention.
What l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
