Description
M. GHILA.
TIE AND RAIL FASTENER.
I Patented May 21, 1912.
APPLICATION FILED MALES. 1912.
INVENTOR I ATTORNEYS WITNESSES rnmmum PLANOGDAPI! cu WAslllNo'rnN D c MIKE CHILA, OF WRITING, INDIANA.
TIE AND RAIL-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 21, 1912.
Application filed March 6, 1912. Serial No. 681,939.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MIKE CHILA, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Whiting, in the county of Lake and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ties and Rail-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accom panying drawing.
This invention relates to ties and rail fasteners, and the objects of my invention are, first, to provide a strong and durable metallic tie for supporting rails; second, to furnish the tie with novel fasteners for retaining the rails thereon, and third, to accomplish the above results by a mechanical construction that is durable and highly eflicient for the purposes for which it is intended.
WVith the above and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein like numerals denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a tie, partly broken away and partly in section, Fig. 2 is a plan of the same partly broken away and partly in section, Fig. 3 is an end View of the tie and rail fastener, Fig. 4 is a bottom plan of the rail fastener, and Fig. 5 is a plan of a washer forming part of the rail fastener.
A tie in accordance with this invention is of the Lbeam construction, comprising a thick web 1, lateral base flanges 2 and lateral top flanges 3, said top flanges supporting the base flanges 4 of a rail 5. The tie, adjacent to the base flanges 1 of the rail 5, is provided with vertical sockets 6, the object of which will presently appear.
Slidably mounted upon the top flanges 3 of the tie are inner and outer rail fasteners, comprising blocks 7 having longitudinal dove-tailed grooves 8 to receive the upper edges of the tie. The inner ends of the fasteners are cut away, as at 9 to provide clearance for the base flanges 4, whereby said flanges can rest upon the inner ends of the blocks 7 and be retained upon the tie by the overhanging portions 10 of said blocks.
The underneath side of each block is provided with an oval recess 11 having one wall thereof provided with a lug 12. The top of each block has a longitudinal slot 13 with one end thereof vertically alining with the socket 6.
Extending through the slot 13 into the socket 6 is a bolt 14 having a rectangular portion 15 within the recess 11. The upper end of the bolt has a head 16 and a nut 17, said head closing the slot 13 when the bolt 14 is in position.
Mounted upon the rectangular portion 15 of the bolt 14 is a washer 18 that has a notch 19 to receive the lug 12. The washer 18 serves as an eccentric, and to assemble the parts, it is necessary that the washer 18 be placed in the oval recess 11 prior to placing the blocks 7 in engagement with the tie. After the block has been placed in engagement with the tie, the washer 18 can be rotated, whereby the walls of the opening 20, which receives the rectangular portion 15 of the bolt 14, will aline with the walls of the slot 13. The bolt 14 can then be placed in position and by partially rotating said bolt, the washer 18 shifts the lug 12 out of the notch 19, as shown in Fig. 2, thereby forcing the fastener block into engagement with the rail. The washer l8 binds against the lug 12 and prevents an outward movement of the fastener block, until the bolt 14 is partially rotated by placing a wrench or other instrument upon the nut 17.
What I claim is In a metallic tie and rail fastener, the combination with rails, and a tie of the I- beam construction adapted to support said rails, said tie having sockets formed therein, of inner and outer fastener blocks slidably mounted upon said tie and engaging the base flanges of said rails, each block having an oval recess formed therein with one of the walls of said recess provided with a lug, each block having the top thereof provided with a longitudinal slot in communication with said recess, a bolt extending through tener block can be shifted by partially rosaid slot and said recess into the socket of tating said bolt. 10 said tie, a head carried by said bolt and In testimony whereof I aflix my signature closing the slot of said fastener block, and in the presence of two witnesses.
a washer detachably mounted upon said bolt MIKE GHILA. within the recess of said fastener block and Witnesses:
having a notch to receive the lug carried by CHAS D. GAINER,
the wall of said recess, whereby said fas- Jos. HRUSKOVICH.
