MEANS FOR ATTACHING BAILS TO RECEPTAGLES.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD M. GEIGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mansfield, in the county of Richmond and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Means for Attaching Bails to Receptacles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters marked To this, end my invention consists in the combination and construction of parts herein- In the said drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a coal-scuttle provided with a bail and ears for attaching them em Fig. 2 represents a bodying my invention. detail perspective view of one of the ears. A designates the bail, B the coal-scuttle, for which any other receptacle may be substituted, it being shown for purposes of illustration only, and O the nearer one of the ears which connect the two. The other ear is necessarily hidden by the scuttle; but its construction is identical with that of the one shown. Said car has lugs or flanges E, through which rivets or other fastenings pass to hold it to the scuttle. Its top is bent to form a horizontal flange constituting two braces H and I separated by a slot C, which receives the vertical round wire of the bail, as shown in Fig. 1. The forward brace, I, is higher than the rear brace, H. The body of the said ear is also provided with a slot D, consisting of two continuous parts or limbs, one of these being vertical and below the forward end of brace H and the other extending obliquely forward and upward to the level of brace H. Thus the two ends of slot D being presented upward, afford two seats or resting-places for the outwardly-bent lower end of the bail. The bail end is in the upper end of the vertical part of the slot D when the receptacle is carried by the bail, which takes naturally the position shown in full lines in Figs. 1 and 3. The braces H I then hold the bail rigid. WVhen the receptacle is set down, the end of the bail drops down through the vertical part of the slot D to the bottom thereof, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 3, is raised along the oblique part of said slot to the upper end thereof, and the bail may then be turned back on top of brace H into the horizontal position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1, so as to be out of the way.

I am aware that various other constructions of ears and bail have heretofore been made use of to brace the bail and hold. it rigid while the receptacle is carried by hand, though permitting the bail to be folded over horizontally when the receptacle is set down. struction I therefore do not broadly claim; but,

Having thus described my invention, what I claim-as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In combination with a bail having a bent lower end, an ear adapted to be attached to a receptacle, and having a slot formed therein, which is partly vertical and, partly inclined upward and forward, the two ends of the said slot providing resting-places for the said end of the hail, the said ear being also provided with means for bracing said bail in an upright position when the said bail is in one of these resting-places, substantially as set forth.

2. In combination with a bail having a bent lower end, an ear adapted to be attached to a receptacle and provided with a slot, which receives the said end and presents two restingplaces therefor the said ear being provided with two braces of different height, arranged on opposite sides of the'bail to hold the latter rigid when upright the lower brace cooperating with one of the said resting-places to permit the folding down of the bail when its end occupies the latter substantially as set forth.

3.
