To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES PFAU, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Connecting-Braces, Shields, and Buffer-Holders for Water-Closet Seats, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to combined connecting brace, shield and buffer holder for water closet seats, especially of the divided or split t pe. Y

The object of my invention is to provide a compact, neat, strong and economical combined connecting brace, shield and buffer holder for water closet seats.

My invent-ion comprises, in combination with a water closet seat and bowl, a combined connecting brace, shield and buffer holder.

My invention also consists in the peculiar construction, combination and arrangement as more specifically set forth and claimed herein.

In the accompanying drawing which serves to illustrate the construction, application and use of my invention: Figure 1 is a plan View looking at the bottom of a water closet seat equipped with my invention. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary cross sectional view taken through the seat on the line 2 -2 of Fig. 1 and showing it in position on the bowl. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the seat and lid in position upon the bowl, part of the bowl being broken away forthe sake of clearness. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the combined connecting brace, shield and bufier holder with the buffers mounted thereon. F ig. 5 is a view in side elevation of the lid and seat in position upon the bowl.

In the embodiment of my invention as illustrated and which shows a preferred construction, 1 and 2 represent the two side members or sections of the seat spaced apart and firmly secured in fixed relation to each other at the front end by the combined connecting brace, shield and buffer holder 3. The rear end of the seat is pivotally connected to the bowl inthe usual manner by hinge plates 4, connecting rod 5 and hinge posts 6. The lid 7' is pivotally mounted on the rod 5 in the usual manner.

The connecting brace 3 is provided with a flange 8, which is preferably constructed integral therewith and which extends downwardly from said connecting brace 3 within and below the upper edge of the closet bowl 11. This shield prevents the user from urinatlng upon the top front edge of the closet bowl or over it upon the floor or down over the front of the bowl or between the seat and the top edge of the closet bowl when seated upon a seat equipped with my invention. The ends of the connecting brace are disposed at an angle to said connecting brace forming angular extensions 10 which extend transversely of the upper edge of the bowl and of the seat. This permits of a more secure and firm fastening of the connecting brace to the under side of the seat at each end, and serves to securely brace and hold the

1 and 2 in fixed relation to each other at their front ends. It also holds the rubber buffers 9 transversely of the upper edge of the bowl 11, insuring a direct contact of the buffer with the bowl under varying conditions as .to size and contour of the bowl and seat. It also permits the connecting brace to be fastened with screws centrally of the edges of the side members of the seat, thereby insuring against splitting of the same.

The connecting brace 3 is preferably curved to conform to the contour of the seat as well as to that of the bowl, the shield or flange 8 also being curved to conform therewith.

The position of the connecting brace 3 when the seat is placed upon the bowl ready for use is readily seen by referring to Fig. 2, the connecting brace 3 being shown in cross section taken through the seat, showing the shield or flange 8 extending downwardly inside and below the top edge of the bowl a sufficient distance to prevent the user from discharging any urine between the seat and the top edge of the bowl. The rubber buffers 9 are also shown in position upon the angular extensions 10 of the connecting brace It will beseen that the device shown in Fig. 4 constructed in accordance with my invention is neat in appearance, compact and thoroughly efficient for the purposes intended. Being combined in a single piece it is stronger in use and more economical than if formed in separate pieces. In addition to this, the shield is more efficient and more sanitary.
