Be it known that 1, WILLIAM D. BURK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toilet Seats, of which the following is a specification.

One object of my invention is to provide an improved toilet-seat which will be particularly adapted for childrens use and which will be.so constructed and designed that it can be readily secured in position by a person even though the person is not a skilled Workman. i

' Another object is to so make my improved seat that it will not injure, impair or interfere with the use vof the usual-or adults seat.

A further object is to make my improved seat of a simple and durable construction so that it can be made and sold at a low cost and at the same time to make it neat and of such appearance that it can be used as a' first class fixture so as not to be unsightly.

These objects, and other advantageous ends which will be described hereinafter, I

attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in Which- I Figure 1 is a side elevation of a toilet pro vided with my improved seat,

Referring to the drawings, 6 represents the body portion of my improved seat which is preferably made of sheet metal such as aluminum and includes a substantially central oval aperture 7. The body portion immediately to the rear ofthej aperture 7 includes a rearwardly extending lip 8. This lip has its rear edge extending transversely and cut away at distances apart as shown at 9. The edge is turned under so as to provide a bearing for a hinge or pivot pin 10. A plate 11 has its forward edge turned and interrupted, as shown at 12, within its length so as to fit within the cut out portions 9; said hinge or pivot pin 10 serving 920. Serial'Nd; 385,420.

The outer edge of the body portion is turned or beaded as shown at 15; said beadincluding a Wire 'or' core member 16; the arrangement beingsuch that the turned edge of the body portion extends under the uppermost part of'the body portion as clearly shown in Figure 3;] This reinforces and increases the strength of the body" portion and at the same time presents a rounded and smooth edge of comparatively great thickness; thus enabling-a strong structure to be provided without using sheet metal of any great thickness. In the same manner the-inner edge part of the body portion 6 which produces the aperture-7 is turned and beaded under asshoWn at 17; said bead also including a core Wire 18. 1

. As shown in Figure 4, the major portion of the plate 11' is arrangedbelow the level of the top 19 of the body portion 6. The edge 12 of theplate is bent upwardly while the transverse edge of the lip 8 is bent downwardly. This brings the plate at practically 1116 8211116 level as the lower portions of the heads 15 and 17 I provide novel contact ing members on the body portion 6 for en gagement withthe top of theusu'al or adults seat 20. These oontactingmernberjs consist of strips 21 of sheet steel; one end portion being wrapped around the .core wire 16' within the confines of the bead 15. The

strips 21 have offset portions 22 adjacent 19 as clearly shown in Figure 5. Rubber or other soft resilient members 24 arefsecu'red to the end portions 23 of the strips-21 and are adapted to engage the u per surface of the adults seat 20 when the body portion 6 is in its operative position as shown in Figure 1. In this manner a suitable an d dependable resilient bearing is provided for the body portion 6 upon the seat 20 without scratching or injuring the seat 20 and even though the rubber members 24: become Worn or hard after extended use, a slight cushion or resilient mounting is provided for the body portion 6 at all times. When-not desired for use the body portion 6 can be swung upwardly on the hinge pin 10 as a pivot and the seat 20 Will then be exposed for use.

By making my improved seat of light Weight sheet metal as above described and forming the reinforcement-s; the seat can be easily and quickly manipulated and at the same time it will be strong and durable.

\Vhile Ihave described my invention as taking a particular form; it will be understood that the various parts of my invention may be changed without departing from the spirit thereof, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise construction set forth, but consider that I am at liberty to make suchchanges and alterations as fairly come Within the scope of the ap ended claims.

Having thus describe my invention, what I claim as new andv desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A seat of the .characterdescribed including a body portion; a plurality of resilient members extending inwardly from the outer edge of said body portion; and cushioning members carried by said resilient members; substantially as described.

2. A seat of the character described illcluding a body portion; a member hinged to said body portion, said body portion having a downturned beaded outer edge and an aperture located within the confines of said edge; resilient strips having portions secured to said body portion within the con fines of said beaded edge; and cushioning members secured to said strips; substan-- tially as described.

3. A seat of the character described including a body portion; member hinged to said body portion, said body portion having a downturned beaded outer edge and an aperture'looated within the confines of said edge; resilient strips having portions secured to said body portion Within the confines of said beaded edge; and cushioning members secured to said strips, said strips havingoffset portions normally spaced below the top of said body portion; substantially as described;

The combination with a seat having an aperture, of an auxiliary seat having an aperture smaller than the first named aperture and arranged to engage the first seat; and a plurality of cushioning members resili ently carried beneath the auxiliary seat to engage the first named seat; substantially as described. g

5. The combination With. a seat having an aperture, of an auxiliary seat having an aperture smaller than the first named aperture and arranged to engage the first seat, said auxiliary seat having rolled inner and outer edges; and cushioning members car ried by said edges with means which resiliently support said members in spaced rel-a tion to the bottom surface of the auxiliary seat; substantially as described.

6. A seat of the character described including a body ortion; a member hinged to said body portion, said body portion havcores; substantially as described.

8. A seat of the class described coinprising an apertured body portion fashioned from sheet metal with the outer. edge and the aperture edge formed with down-turned beads; cores in said beads; strips having ends fastened between said beads and cores; and cushioning means secured to the free ends of said strips and'being spaced from said seat; substantially as described.
