Description

I. P. GOWAN.
WATER CLOSET. APPLICATION rum) NOV. 28, 1910.
1,077,221. Patented om; 28, 1913.
WITNESS! JOSEPH P. COWAN, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
WATER-CLOSET.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed November 28, 1910. ser l No. 594,428.
Patented Oct. 28, 1913,
all whom it may concern it known that I, J osErH P. COWAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and Stateof Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tater-Closets, of which improvement the following is a specification.
My invention relates to water closets, and more particularly to .the parts connecting seat with the bowl. Closet bowls are ordinarily made in several sizes, and owing to variations in location of the bolt holes therein for securing the seat connections thereto, it has been necessaryto have seats and connections to suit each size, said openings varying transversely, between the same, from a to 5%} inchesfand from the front edge of the bowl to said openings from 16 to 17 inches. *iMy invention has for its object to provide connecting means adapted to suit several sized closet bowls and to bring about proper positioning of the seat withrespect to the bowl, which has heretofore been found practically impossible particularly where it be desired to employ oneparticular form of seat to the different makes of bowls, such improper positioning being dueto variation rear portion of the bowls, to receive the bolts of the seat connection, are located with of which variations tend to cause the seat to either project too much forward, too much rearward, or laterally, and to cause the seat 'to assume a position out of alincmcnt with respect to the bowl, thus causing inconvenience in applying the seat as well as aifecting its appearance.
-My invention has for a further object to provide means to limit the distance which the scat may be elevated and thrown back,
it-being found in some instances this limiting of the seat movement is desirable, particularly where the lid is dispensed with and the plumbing is expose at the rear of the seat and liable tobe damaged by the "'59 seat Striking the same.
Vith the above objects in view, the in- .Wention comprises a hinge connection provided With means to connect same to the vbowl, the reversal of which means will perunit of longitudinal adjustment of the seat respect to the bowl; means tovary.
out 5% in the distance at which the openings in the both the longitudinal and lateral position of the seat with respect to the bowl, and means to limit the'distance at which the seat may be raised and thrown back, or not, as may be desired, all of which will be hereinafter more fully described in this specification and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, in which drawings:
Figure 1 isa side elevation of a portion of a closet bowl and seat embodying my improvement, said view being partly sectional and the seat shown as elevated to the point limited by the connections. Fig. 2 is a front view of the seat and connection, showing the seat elevated and means for limiting the seat elevation. Fig. 8 is a similar view showing the connections as appl-ied so as to not limit the seat elevation.
Fig.- 4 is a plan view of the hinge members, disconnecte Fig. 4 is an end elevation of the hinge pivotal member. Fig. 5 is an elevation of one of the seat adjusting bolts, in two positions, as employed to secure the connection to the bowl. Fig. 6 is an inverted plan of the adjusting bolt. Fig. 7 is a plan of one of the eccentric washers for adjusting the position of the bolt in the openings of the bowl. Fig. 8 is a side elevation of a portion of the hinge connection showing the bolt adjusted in an opposite direction to that shown in Fig. a plan view of a closet bowl.
In said drawings, the reference numeral 1 indicates a closet bow], of any desired form, provided at its rear with bolt openings 1', through wlqffh the bolts of the seat connection pass, said openings being provided with a concave recess at each end 1 2 and 2 indicate two side sections of a sanitary form of seat hingedly connected to the bowl at the rear thereof,-by my improved conncction, and secured to one another at their forward ends by a transversely disposed segmental shaped member 3. Y
The structural combination and parts here shown comprise an integral hinge pivotal 1. Fig. 9 is member transversely disposed with respect to the seat and forming a connection for the rear of the divided parts thereof, said pivotal member having its intermediatev por tion 4 slightly bowed outwardly and its extremities 5 broadened out in right-angular "form, in cross section, to correspond -with the rear edges and underside of the 'seat, the broadened portions being provided with openings through which screws pass for V securing the member to the seat, said pivotal through within which the portion 8 seat the mere transposing of the standarc 1' member having formed thereon a suitable shoulder or abutment 7 from where its pivotal portions 8 project.
To the bowl is secured a pair of hinge posts or standards 9, each comprising an upright portion 9 having" an opening 9" thereof the pivotal member mounted, and an extended base 2) within which is formed an opening 10, preferably of elongated form, the upright portion or each standard being provided with a suitable shoulder or stop 11 adapted to be engaged bythe abutment or stop 7 on the pivotal member to limit the upward swingof the seat, if desired.
Each standard is connected to the rear of thebowl by means of a suitable bolt 12 and nut 13, said bolt having a la crally disposed or projected head 13, provided with a shouldered port-ion l-il extending thereabout adapted to tit or engage within the elongated opening: it) in the standard base so as to hold and retain the standard in firm position and preventing the bolt from turning. 'lhe bowl openings 1 through which the bolts pass once have loosely seated within the rec portion 1 formed at each end thereoit', an eecentrically formed bolt positioning member or washer 15, of concave form in crosssection', correspondingin term with the recess portion, for the purpose of adjusting the position or the bolt in the opening.
The raising of the scat may be limited to an approximate vvertical position by the abutments or steps 7 oi the transverse hinge member and the shoulders or stops ll oi the standards coming into engagement with one another, shown in Figs. l and 2, but
if it is desired not to limit the raising" of the as shown in Fig. 3, so as to bring the abutments 11 outwardly, will permit; of the seat being so operated. I
By reversing thejbolts'lz the seat may be adjusted forwardly or rearwardly in a longitudinal direction, as shown in Figs. 1 and. 8, as occasion requires for the different sized bowls, to bring the seat in the desired posi tion. By rotatively adjusting the eccentricv washers 15 within their recessed seats at the ends of the bolt openings, the position of the bolts passing tllltETGtlUOtitQh maybe varied to permit a lesser degree of adjustment of the hinge pos or standards than maybe de sired by reversing the bolts, or increase or diminish the bolt reversal adjustment, occasion may require, as shown in li ies. 1 and 3. l urthermore, the rotative adp t:- ment of these eccentric washers will permit of the bolts being properly spaced laterally, even though the openingsin the bowl be not spaced to correspond therewith, or 'said washers'may be adjusted so as to cause the bolts to be properly positioned vertically should the openings be irregularly formed in the bowl, or be the means of Varying the position of the seat, in any direction, with re spect to the bowl.
By the use of my improvements the dilliculties of properly positioning seat upon abowl are overcome and also the connecting parts are so constructed and arranged as to give strength to the seat and retain the same in lll'l'lz position.
White I have shown and described. one particular embodiment of my invention, to a certain form .of seat and. bowl, I do not wish to limit myself to the particular structure shown, as the same may be varied with out departing from the spirit of my invention.
i claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent: t
