EDWARD J. DE GUEIIlf-IEE, OF IHILW'AUKEE, lVISCONSIN HINGE FOR CLOSET-TOPS.
Application filed July 1, 1
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, l lnwlxnn J. DE Gunnrnnn, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of l i isconsin, have invented c rtain new and useful Improvements in Him ce for Clo et-l ops; and I do hereby declu that the following is full, clear, and exact description thereof.
This invention relates to toilets or closets and particularly to the means for mounting the seats and cov rs thereon.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a hinge for closet seats and covers having means whereby th covers may be retained in open position.
It is also an object of this invention to provide a hinge fixture, the parts of which are so constructed that the hinge element thereof may be pro )erly associated with the fixed element when the latter is disposed upon either the right-hand or left-hand side of a support or other pardon which the same is mounted. The usual number of parts which it is necessary to keep on hand is thus reduced substantially one-half.
A further object is to simplify and otherwise improve fixtures of this character to reduce their cost of manufacture and application, and increase their case in operation.
With the foregoing objects and advantages in view the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter more particularly referred to and illustrated in the accompanying draw ing, in which:
Figure 1, represents an elevational View of a hinge fixture constructed in accordance with the invention, and
Fig. 2, is a sectional view thereof.
In the drawing the portion of the closet bowl to which my invention is secured is designated by the numeral 1, and the open top of said bowl is provided with a usual seat 2 and cover 3. Ordinarily a pair of the fixtures comprising the invention is used for hinging the seat and cover 2 and 3 respectively to the bowl. With most closets it is necessary to provide some outside means to retain the cover in raised open po sition.
My invention is designed to incorporate such supporting means in the hinge fixture itself. This fixture comprises a standard t having a screw threaded attaching shank 5 Specification of Letters Patent.
Serial No. 307,950.
adapted to extend through an opening in the portion 1 of the bowl and to be secured thereto by a nut 6, a hinge element 7 for securenient to the seat 2, and a second hinge element 8 which is attached to the cover 8.
'llhe head of the standard dis provided with two flat opposed faces 9 and 10; a pintle 11 extends laterally and centrally from the face 9, and a similar pintle 12 projects from the other face 10. The pintles 11 and 12 are longitudinally alined and the first mentioned one slidably and rotatably receives an eye 13 formed on the hinge .element 7.
The other pintle 12 cooperates with an eye i i of the hinge element 8 said eye being slidable and rotatable thereon. When the cover is closed, the hinge elements 7 and 8 are disposed substantially horizontal and parallel to each other, but when said cover i s open, the hinge element 8 is arranged approximately vertical and is retained in this position by the engagement of an inclined shoulder thereon with the similarly positioned face 16 of a stop lug 16. This lug 16 extends laterally from the standard a below the pintle 12 and substantially parallel thereto. In other words the lug is relatively horizontal and is provided with a second inclined face 16*. The faces 16 and 16 are inclined upwardly and toward each other to define ridge longitudinally of the top of the lug as indicated in 1.
It will be noted that the ear 14 has a pair of opposed faces, one of which is engaged with the face 10 of the standard head when the shoulder 15 is in a position engaged with, or to be engaged with, the contact surface 16. On the other hand when it is desired that the shoulder 15 encriminately connected with either side of. the cover and operated with equal facility.
It is simply necessary to notice that the lugs 16 and the shoulders 15 are properly located with respect to each other so that the cover may be retained in relatively upright position when raised to the limit of its opening movement. When the cover is open, the seat 2 may be raised and allowed to rest against the former.
Various minor changes may be made in the form and proportion of the several parts of the invention Without departing from or sacrificing any of the principles thereof.
1' claim:
1. A hinge comprising a fixed element and a hinge element, the hinge element including an eye, a pintle extending from the fixed element and being rotatably disposed in the eye, a shoulder on the hinge element, and a lug projecting from the fixed element in the direction of said pintle for engagement by the shoulder to retain the hinge element against pivotal movement in one direction.
2. A. hinge comprising a fixed element and a hinge element, the hinge element including an eye having a pair of faces, a pintle extending from the face of the fixed element and being rotatably and slidably disposed in the eye and detachably engageable therewith to selectively contact either of the faces of the hinge element with the face of the fixed element, a lug projecting from the fixed element, said lug having a pair of contact faces, and a shoulder on the hinge element engageable with either of the lug contact surfaces, one surface being engaged when one face of the eye contacts with the face of the fixed element, the other surface being engaged when the other face of said eye and the said face of the fixed element are adjacent.
3. A hinge comprising a fixed element and a hinge element, the hinge element including an eye having a pair of faces, a pintle extending from the face of the fixed element and being rotatably and slidably disposed in the eye and detachably engageable therewith to selectively contact either of the faces of the hinge element with the face of the fixed element, a lug projecting from the fixed element, said lug having a pair of contact surfaces inclined upwardly and toward each other,,and a shoulder on the hinge element engageable with either of the lug contact surfaces, said shoulder being inclined similarly to the contact surfaces, one inclined contact surface being engaged by the shoulder when one face of the eye contacts with the face of the fixed element, the other inclined contact surface being engaged when the other face of said eye and the said face of the fixed element are adjacent.
l. A hinge comprising a supporting standard, a pintle extending laterally from said standard, a hinge element having an eye slidably and rotatably receiving said pintle, a shoulder carried by the eye, and a lug extending laterally from the stand ard and in the direction of said pintle, said lug having a pair of inclined contact surfaces for selective engagement by said shoulder, said selection being procured by reversing the position of the eye of said pintle.
5. ii hinge comprising a supporting standard, a pair of pintles extending in opposite directions from the standard, said pintles being alined, a seat hinge element rotatable on one of the pintles, a cover hinge element slidable and rotatable on the other pintle, a lug projecting from the standard in the direction of the last mentioned. pintle, and a shoulder carried by the cover hinge pintle for engagement with said lug to limit movement of the former and to retain the same in a substantially upright position, the seat hinge element being held in a similar position by engagement with the cover hinge element.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin.
