This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a lifting device for skylights and the like.
More specifically, the invention proposes the construction of a lifting device for skylights and the like characterized by a means operable by a handle for causing a skylight, transom or similarly pivotally mounted window to be opened when the said handle is rotated.
Still further it is proposed to characterizethe lifting device by a casing mounted at one side of the frame and a bearing on the other side thereof for rotatively supporting a shaft which extends across the window and which is connected to the window through the medium of links in a manner to cause the window to be opened when the shaft is turned.
Still further it is proposed to provide a handle which extends into said casing at right angles to said shaft and which is provided with a screw portion upon which a follower is mounted in a manner to cause the follower to be moved up and down thereon when the handle is rotated.
Still further it is proposed to provide a means for connecting the follower to said shaft in a manner to cause said shaft to be rotated when said follower moves up and down on said screw portion.
Still further it is proposed to provide a means for locking the handle against being rotated to lock said window in a closed, or various open positions for preventing the window from being opened from the outside.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

Thelifting device for skylightsand. the. like, ac.-
cording to this invention, is to be used in conjunction with a frame 50 having a transom H or other similar window element pivotally mounted thereon at the sides thereof, as indicated at l2.
The lifting device proper, comprising a casing i3 is mounted on the frame it at one side of the transom H. A bracket M is mounted on the frame it on the opposite side of the transom II. A shaft 25 has one of its ends rotatively supported in the bracket M and the other of its ends extended into the casing H3. The end of the shaft it which is extended into the casing I3 is provided with a collar it for preventing the shaft from being accidentally disengaged therefrom. This collar 56 is held in position by means of a set screw ll. The casing l3 has a removable side plate 13 held in position by means of screws which extend into bosses l3 formed on a portion of the casing l3.
A screw it is rotatively mounted within the casing I3 and is extended at right angles to the shaft l5. A manually operable means is provided for rotating the screw it. This means comprises a shaft it which extends from the bottom of the screw it and which has its free end rotatively supported in a bearing 29 mounted upon the wall located beneath the frame I4. The extended end of the shaft I9 is provided with a handle portion Hi by which it may be conveniently rotated for correspondingly rotating the screw I8. p
A follower 2i is mounted upon the screw l8 and is provided with a portion 2 l which extends througha slot lt formed in the side of the casing 53. That portion of the follower 2| which extends through the slot l3 prevents the follower 2! from rotating with the screw it. Thus the slot l3 acts to limit the follower 2! against rotating, causing the same to move vertically upwards and downwards depending on the direction in which the screw i8 is rotated.
A radial arm 22'has one of its ends fixedly attached to the shaft l5 immediately adjacent the casing l3. A link 23 has one of its ends pivotally'connected to the free end of the radial arm 22. The other end of the link 23 is pivotally attached to the extended portion Zi of the follower 2! for causing the shaft IE to be rotated as the follower 2! moves upwards and downwards upon the screw iii.
A second radial arm 24 is mounted upon the shaft 55 intermediate the ends thereof. A link 25 has one of its ends pivotally connected to the free end of the radial arm 2%. The other end of the link 25 is pivotally connected to a bracket 26. This bracket 26 is fixedly attached to the bottom edge portion of the transom H. Thus as the shaft 15 is rotated through the medium of the radial arm 22 and the link 23, the radial arm 24 will be correspondingly moved to cause the transom l I to be pivoted about its pivot points l2.
If the handle l9 is turned in one direction the transom I I will be pivoted to an open position, and if the handle I9 is turned in the other direction the transom II will be moved back to its closed position.
According to the modification of the invention shown in Fig. 6 a means is provided for locking the shaft I9 against being rotated to hold the transom ll closed or partially open as desired, and prevent the same from being completely opened from the outside. This means comprises a boss 21 formed on the bottom wall of the casing l3 and through which the shaft l9 extends. The screw 18 is in the form of a. tube rotatively mounted between the top and bottom walls of the casing It. The shaft [9 has a square upper end 19* which slidably but non-rotatively extends through a square opening formed in the tubular screw IS. The top end of the shaft I9 extends beyond the top wall of the casing l3 and has a washer 28 freely mounted thereon.
A head portion 29 is mounted upon the free end of the shaft l9 and an expansion spring 30 is mounted on the extended end and operates between the adjacent faces of the washer 28 and the head 29 for urging the shaft l9 upwards. A collar 3| is fixedly mounted upon the shaft I9 below the boss 21. The bottom face of the boss 21 is provided with a plurality of serrations 21 and the adjacent face of the collar 3| is provided with complementary serrations 31* which are adapted to engage each other for holding the shaft l9 against being rotated. For rotating the shaft it is necessary to pull the handle l9 downwards against the handle action of the spring 30 to disengage the teeth 3| from the teeth 21*. The shaft I5 is then free to be rotated and when the handle l9 is again released the spring 30 will draw the shaft upwards to re-engage the teeth 3i with the teeth 21 In other respects this form of the invention is similar to the previous form.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. A lifting device for skylights and the like, comprising a frame, a transom hingedly mounted in said frame, a casing mounted on one side of said frame, a bearing mounted on the other side of said frame, a shaft extending across said transom and rotatively mounted on said casing and said bearing, a screw rotatively mounted in said casing, manually operable means for rotating said screw, a follower on said screw, radial arms on said shaft, a link pivotally connected with said follower and one of said radial arms, and another link pivotally connected with another one of said radial arms and said transom to move the transom when said screw is turned.
2. A lifting device for skylights and the like, comprising a frame, a transom hingedly mounted in said frame, a casing mounted on one side of said frame, a bearing mounted on the other side of said frame, a shaft extending across said transom and rotatively mounted on said casing and said bearing, a screw rotatively mounted in said casing, manually operable means for rotating said screw, a follower on said screw, radial arms on said shaft, a link pivotally connected with said follower and one of said radial arms. and another link pivotally connected with another one of said radial arms and said transom to move the transom when said screw is turned, said follower being formed with a portion extending through a slot formed in the side of said casing for preventing said follower from turning with said screw to limit the movement of said follower to the verticaL.
3. A lifting device for skylights and the like,

ed in said frame, a casing mounted on one side of said frame, a bearing mounted on the other side of said frame, a shaft extending across said transom and rotatively mounted on said casing and said bearing, a screw rotatively mounted in said casing, manually operable means for rotat ing said screw, a follower on said screw,-radial arms on said shaft, a link pivotally connected with said follower and one of said radial arms, and another link pivotally connected with another one of said mdial arms and said transom to move the transom when said screw is turned, said casing being formed with a removable side.
4. A lifting device for skylights and the like, comprising a frame, a transom hingedly mounted in said frame, a casing mounted on one side of said frame, a bearing mounted on the other side of said frame, a shaft extending across said transom and rotatively mounted on said casing and said bearing, a screw rotatively mounted in said casing, manually operable means for rotating said screw, a follower on said screw, radial arms on said shaft, a link pivotally connected with said follower and one of said radial arms, and another link pivotally connected with another one of said radial arms and said transom to move the transom when said screw is turned, the end of said shaft which extends into said casing being provided with a collar fixedly mounted thereon for preventing said shaft from being accidentally disengaged therefrom.
5, A lifting device for skylights and the like, comprising a frame,a transom hingedly mounted in said frame, a casing mounted on one side of said frame, a bearing mounted on the other side of said frame, a shaft extending across said transom and rotatively mounted on said casing and said bearing, a screw rotatively mounted in said casing, manually operable means for rotating said screw, a follower on said screw, radial arms on said shaft, a link pivotally connected with said follower and one of said radial arms, and another link pivotally connected with another one of said radial arms and said transomto move the transom when said screw is turned, said manually operable means comprising a handle extending from the bottom of said screw in a manner to be rotated for correspondingly rotating said screw.
6. A lifting device for skylights and the like, comprising a frame, a transom hingedly mounted in said frame, a casing mounted on one side of said frame, a bearing mounted on the other side of said frame, a shaft extending across said transom and rotatively mounted on said casing and said bearing, a screw rotatively mounted in said casing, manually operable means for rotating said screw, a follower on said screw, radial arms on said shaft, a link pivotally connected with said follower and one of said radial arms, and another link pivotally connected with another one of said radial arms and said transom to move the transom when said screw is turned, and a means for locking said screw against being rotated.

A lifting device for skylights and the like, comprising a frame, a transom hingedly mounted in said frame, a casing mounted on one side of said frame, a bearing mounted on the other side of said frame, a shaft extending across said transom and rotatively mounted on said casing and said bearing, a screw rotatively mounted in said casing, manually operable means for rotating said screw, a follower on said screw, radial arms on said shaft, a link pivotally connected with said follower and one of said radial arms, and another link pivotally connected with another one of said radial arms and said transom to move the transom when said screw is turned, said means comprising a boss formed on the bottom face of said casing, said screw being in the form of a tube and having a square opening, a shaft forming a handle having a square portion extending through the square opening in said screw, a collar mounted on said handle and engageable against said boss, complementary teeth formed on the adjacent faces of said boss and said collar and engageable with each other for holding said shaft against being rotated, and
resilient means for urging said collar and boss into contact with each other.
8. A lifting device for skylights and the like;
arms on said shaft, a link pivotally connected v with said follower and one of said radial arms, and another link pivotally connected with another one of said radial arms and said transom to move the transom when said screw is turned, said means comprising a boss formed on the bottom face of said casing, said screw being in the form of a tube and having a square opening, a shaft forming a handle having a square portion extending through the square opening in said screw, a collar mounted on said handle and engageable against said boss, complementary teeth formed on the adjacent faces of said boss and said collar and engageable with each other for holding said shaft against being rotated, and resilient means for urging said collar and boss into contact with each other, said resilient means comprising an expansion spring mounted on said shaft for urging the same into a direction in which said collar and said boss will be in engagement.
