(01. 16-144) s to Figuresv 1 and 3, ll) designates a casement This invention relates to an adjustable latch for hinged members, herein designed for use in connection with a casement, but adaptable to general use.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive and positive latch for ad-justably latching a casement at its hinge from moving relative to its jam or frame.
Another object of the invention is to obtain adjustable latching of a casement by means of a bolt slidable in one direction toopen the latch and slidable in the other direction to close the latch, but not requiring turning of the bolt to either latch the easement or unlatoh it.
Another object of the invention is to provide a casement latch adapted to coact with. the casement hinge; which will normally rest in a position positively latching the casement from moving; which will grip both wings of the easement hinge in effecting the latching function, and which will release the wings of the hinge tomove freely relatively by movement of the latch member in one direction and again latch the hinge wings from relative movement by movement of the latch member in the opposite direction.
Another object is to provide a casementlatch adjustable in a considerable plurality of positively held positions, and one that is void of springs, snaps, lock screwsor any of the numerous forms of latching instrumentalities employed in window latches.
Still another object is to provide. a casement latch for installation on the inside and particularly in close proximity to the rabbet between the sash and frame, in which location it is most inaccessible from the outside and therefore unusually efiective to prevent further opening of the casement from a partially open ventilating position.
And still another object of the invention is to provide an adjustable casement latching device which lends itself to the obtaining of both adjustment and latching functions by means 7 of a single slidable latch member adapted to be moved in a plane parallel to the axis of the hinge to obtain the advantage of gravityfor holding the latch member in its latching functioning position.

Fig. 3 is a plan view looking downward on the axis line of the easement hinge and showing the form of the present invention illustrated by Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing and. for the present adapted for swinging motion relative to a jam or frame indicated at H. Supporting the casement I0 for horizontal swinging motion frornthe frame II is a hinge 12 having two wings or leaves l3 and, the leaf I3 being secured to the easement I0 and the leaf l4 being secured to the frame or jam II. This hinge is of the conventional form and is jointed at its leaf axis by the usual pin l5. It will beobvious that this hinge ofiers two exposed bar edges l6 and I1 comprising the top or bottom edges of the two leaves l3 and'l4 'disposed between the axis of the hinge and the'oute'r portions which engage the sash and frame, re-
spectively. Since these exposed and coincident bar portions I6 and I! extend radially from the hinge axis, and swinging toward and fromeach other, upon closing and opening the casement H), the two upper or lower edges I6 and ll therefore would accommodate a toothed, recessed or notched radius disk or mushroom shaped portion of the latch member I8 when raised and lowered intoengagement with the upper or lower COlIlCl-r dent edges l6 and ll of the hinge leaves l3 and [4, whereby the hinge is latched and the casement latched accordingly. Hence the present invention is found to include a bolt or slide bar part [9 slidably mounted preferably by a guide plate or base member 20 provided with guides 2! and 2| receiving the slide bar part l9 and which is secured to the casement (sash) l0 and which slide bar part I!) ispreferably formed to include an integral and outwardly off-set portion [8 provided with irregularly spaced notches 2| for engagement with the edges l6 and ll of the hinge wings l3 and I4.
It will be seen that if the invention is installed vertically, above the hinge, the slidable bolt [9 and flanged disk l8 will constitute a gravity inclined member which will maintain in any selected position the easement Ill from moving relative to the jam orframe.
To change the position of the casement, it will be obvious that this simple latch only requires that the bolt [9 beraised, the casement moved to the desired position, and the bolt l 9 again moved into engagement with the hinge leaves 13 and. M.
Referring now. to Fig. 2, a modified form of making the slidable bolt and latching portion is shown. The numeral 22 indicating this main part of the invention consisting of a ribbon of metal is bent to suffice therequirements of both the slide bolt I9 and the notched portion l 8. All other parts being the same as illustrated in Fig. 1 are indicated by the same numerals. The construction' of the modified form of the invention illustrated in Fig. 2 differs from the construction. illustrated in. Fig. 1, principally, in that a bar stock of substantially one size from end to end is used for the bolt and projecting latching portion l9 and I8, thus integrally forming the movable latch member. The stock being twisted at substantially right angle to the bolt portion l9 and from the angularly projecting juncture point with the bolt portion l9 being twisted spirally to a central point so as to provide the latching portion I8 in which the series of recesses 01' notches 2| are irregularly spaced for cooperalation While I have illustrated preferred forms of the present invention, it will be understood that varrious changes may be made and other forms employed without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims,
Thus it will be seen that I have provided a singular adjustable and positive latching device which is simple, inexpensive of manufacture, easily installed and novel particularly in its making use of the established hinge found on the easement to complete an adjustable latching apparatus therefor.
I claim:
1. A casement window hinge latch, comprising a base portion having guides for a reciprocal latching member and adapted to be mounted on said window adjacentsaid hinge, a latching member comprising a bar portion reciprocal in said guides parallel to the hinge axis, and carrying a laterally projecting hinge leaf engaging member, said laterally projecting portion having around its periphery irregularly spaced notches adapted to be brought into engagement with the adjacent edges of the hinge leaves to latch them in any adjusted position of the casement window.
2. A casement window hinge latch, comprising a base portion having guides for a reciprocal latching member and adapted to be mounted on said window adjacent said hinge, and a latching member comprising a bar portion reciprocal in said guides parallel to the hinge axis, and carrying a flanged disk-shaped'end portion laterally projecting with respect to said bar portion to span the coaxial edges'of the'hinge leaves, said flanged disk-shaped portion having around its periphery irregularly spaced'notches adapted to be brought into engagement with said coaxial edges of the hinge leaves to latch said hinge guides for a reciprocal latching member operative in a vertical plane coincident to the said hinge vertical axis, said base member being'mounted on said vertical sash'part of said casement, and a slidable latch member reciprocal in said guides for movement parallel to said vertical sash part toward and away from the pivotally-coaxial and adjacent edges of the hingeleavea'said slidable latch member having its end, being that contiguous to said hinge, notched at irregularly spaced points forming a dentated member adapted to be brought into engagement with the pivotallycoaxial and adjacent edges of both leaves of the hinge to latch them in any adjusted position of the casement window.
'4; A casement window hinge latch, comprising a reciprocal latching member comprising a bar portion for reciprocal mounting on one of the hinged elements and carrying an irregularly notched portion adapted to be brought into dentate engagement with the edges of the leaves of the hinge to latch them in any adjusted position of the casement window and carrying a guide portion adaptedto engage the pivot pin of the hinge,'a pivot pin of said hinge one end of which being formed to project beyond said engagable edges of the leaves of the hinge and adapted to fit within said carried guide portion of said latching member and forming one reciprocal movement guide therefor, and a base portion adapted to be mounted on said one of the hinged elements and having guides for said bar portion of said latching member and forming another reciprocal movement guide therefor.
5. A casement window hinge latch, comprising, in combination, a bearing member for the reciprocal movement mounting of a slidable hinge latch member and adapted to be mounted on one of the hinged elements, a slidable latch member reciprocal in said bearing member parallel to the hinge axis, said latch member carrying an irregularly notched portion adapted to be brought into engagement with the adjacent edges of the hinge leaves to latch them in any adjusted position of the casement window, and said latch member also carrying a guide member adapted for reciprocal bearing movement over the adjacent end of the hinge pivot pin.

Ina casement window hinge latching device means for latching the leaves of said hinge in any adjusted position of said casement window gagement with the adjacent edges of the hinge leaves and a guide member carried by said bolt and adapted to operate as a bearing to reciprocally engage the pivot pin of the hinge.

A casement window hinge latch, comprising a slidable latch member adapted to be slidably mounted on one of the hinged elements, means for slidably mounting said latch member on said one of'said hinged elements reciprocal parallel to the hinge axis, said slidable latch member carrying a laterally projecting hinge leaf engaging member, said laterallyprojecting portion having a turned rim with irregularly spaced notches formed in said turned rim adapted to be brought into engagement with the adjacent edges of the hinge leaves to latch them in any adjusted position of the casement window, and a hub formed in said laterally projecting portion and adapted to fit over the pivot pin of the hinge, said hub acting as a supplementary mounting means for said latch member to slide parallel to the hinge axis,
