OLIVER T. DUTRO, OF BUFFALO, NEV YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO IVILLIAM II. MORAN AN D FRANCIS S. TEARNEY, OF NIAGARA FALLS, NEIV YORK.
WATER-CLOSET SEAT.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 557,780, dated April 7, 1896.
Application filed February l1, 1895. Serial No. 537,877. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, OLIvER T. DUTRO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tater-Closet Seats, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to water-closet and commode seats which can be adjusted for either adults or children; and it has the object to provide a comfortable seat of this character which is applicable to ordinary closets having a single seat and cover.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a longitudinal section of my improved seat and the supporting-bowl, showing the seats and the cover lowered. Fig. 2 is a similar section of the seat, showing the cover and the supplemental seat raised. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the supplemental seat swung down into position. Fig. 4 is a front view corresponding to Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a top plan view, partly in section, corresponding to Fig. 3.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several figures.
A is the bowl of the closet, and B the usual fixed cross-piece, arranged in rear of the bowl and having its front edge stepped to form ledges b b b2.
O is the main seat for adults, arranged immediately above the bowl and preferably hinged at its upper rear edge to the lower ledge b2, so that it may be raised to clear the bowl, if desired.
D is a supplemental partial seat arranged above the main seat and adapted to cover the rear portion thereof, so as to reduce the size of its aperture and render the seat suitable for children. This supplemental seat is pivoted at its upper rear edge to the intermediate ledge b of the cross-piece B, as shown at d, so that it may be swung down upon the main seat, as shown inFigs. 1, 3, 4, and 5, orraised to clear the aperture ofthe main seat, as shown in Fig. 2. The supplemental seat is provided in its front edge with a concave recess CZ', which forms the rear portion of the reduced seat-aperture when said seat is lowered upon the main seat, and which is arranged to form a continuation of the edge of the main seataperture, as shown in Fig. 5. The edge of ered, as shown in Fig. l.
this recess is preferably beveled to correspond to the bevel of the main seat-aperture.
E is the cover of the seats, arranged to rest upon the supplemental seat, and which is hinged at its upper rear edge to the top ledge of the cross-pieceB, as shown at e, so that it may be raised clear of the seats.
F is a filling-piece which is secured to the under side of the front portion of the cover and which occupies the vacant space above the main seat and in front of the supplemental seat when the` latter and the cover are low- This filling-piece is of the same thickness as the supplemental seat, so as to rest upon the main tseat when the cover is lowered. The lling-piece serves to support the front portion of the cover when in this position, thus preventing breakage or splitting thereof by sitting upon it, which would be liable to occur in the absence of the iilling-piece. The inner edge of the latter is preferably shaped to conform to the front.
edge of the supplemental seat, as shown in the drawings.
g is a turn-button or other suitable catch arranged near the inner edge of the fillingpiece and adapted to engage with the outer portion of the supplemental seat, so as to cause the latter to move with the cover. The supplemental seat is normally connected with the cover, as shown in Fig. 2, so that upon raising the cover the seat is suitable for adults, while when it is desired to adjust the seat for children the supplemental seat is disengaged from the cover and lowered. Owing to the different elevations at which the cover and the supplemental seat are hinged, the front edge of said seat recedes from and approaches the inner edge of the filling-piece in opening and closing the cover, and in order to maintain the connection between these parts the turnbutton is made long enough to overlap the supplemental seat in all positions thereof.
When my improved water-closet seat is adjusted for children, the rear edge of the seataperture is higher than the front edge and acts as a brace or rear support, which enables a small child to sit upright more comfortably than is the case when the entire edge of the aperture is in the same plane. This construction possesses the further advantage IOO that it permits the employment of hard Wood, such as Walnut or cherry, for the supplemental or half seat, and the use of a cheap or inferior Wood for the filling-piece secured to the cover, thus reducing the cost of the seat.
The seat can be applied at small additional expense to closets having the usual main seat and cover by providing the usual cross-piece or seat-support With an additional ledge, providing the cover with the lling-piece and hinging it to this ledge, and hinging the supplemental seat to the intermediate ledge.
I claim as my invention* l. The combination with a main seat having an aperture, of a supplemental partial seat arranged to cover the rear portion of the main seat for reducing the size of its aperture, whereby the reduced seat-aperture is formed partly by the main seat and partly by the supplemental seat, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination with a main seat having an aperture, of a supplemental partial seat arranged above the main seat, adapted to cover the rear portion of the latter for reducing the size of its aperture and provided in its front edge With a concave recess forming the rear portion of the reduced aperture, substantially as set forth.
cover the rear portion thereof for reducing the size of the aperture, and a cover arranged above the supplemental seat and having on its under side a filling-piece adapted to occupy the space in front of the supplemental seat, and provided at its inner edge with a catch adapted to engage with the supplemental seat for connecting the latter with the cover, substantially as set forth.
Vitness my hand this 0th day of February, 1895.
OLIVER T. DUTRO.
