UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WATER-CLOSET BOWL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 17, 1906.
Application filed June 2, 1905. Serial No. 263,399.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, AMBROSE WM. HOWE, a citizen of the United States of America and a resident of Honolulu, in the Island of Oahu and Territory of Hawaii, have invented a new and Improved WVater-Oloset Bowl, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This inventionrelates to water-closet bowls; and the object is to produce a bowl with which a cuspidor is incorporated, to the end that the cuspidor may be automatically cleaned.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts to be described more fully hereinafter and definitely set forth in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specifica-- tion, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
. Figure 1 is a perspective of a water-closet bowl with which my invention has been incorporated. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 3, and Fig. 3 is a plan.
Referring more particularly to the parts, 1 represents a water-closet bowl having a basin 2 for water and formed below into a suitable base 3. The bowl is provided with the usual seat 4 and cover 5 and is furnished with the usual flush-pipe connections 6, leading to a flush-tank 7. The valve of the flushtank is opened when desired by pulling a chain 8. (Shown in Fig. 1.)
In applying my invention I provide the bowl 1, preferably on one side, with a neck 1*, which projects laterally, presenting an upwardly-opening mouth 1 The interior of this neck is in communication with the interior of the basin 2 by means of openings 9, formed through the adjacent wall of the basin, as indicated. The openings 9 preferably comprise a main or large opening 9 below, through which the inner face of the outer wall 10 of the neck passes in such a way as to constitute a continuation of the bottom and side wall of the basin, and a plurality of smaller openings 11 at a higher level, all as indicated most clearly in Fig. 2.
The mouth 1 is on the same level as the upper edge of the bowl 1.' It is closed by a revoluble cover 12, pivotally attached at 13, Within the mouth 1 under the cover a platter 14 is supported, as shown in Fig. 2,the
same preferably consisting of a nickeled plate dished so as to present a conical wall converging downwardly toward an opening 15.
From the arrangement described evidently the cuspidor may be used by a person using the closet, as the cuspidor would be within easy reach. In using the cuspidor its cover 12 would be thrust to one side, as indicated in Fig. 3. As is usual in bowls of this kind, a quantity of water stands constantly in the basin 2. This water will enter. also the neck 1 and maintain itself at the same level there. When the bowl 1 is flushed, the Water within the basin 2 will be violently ej ected in the usual manner. The water contained in the neck 1 a or cuspidor will be also suddenly sucked out through the opening 9 In this way the cuspidor is automatically cleaned, and as the basin 2 refills the water within the cuspidor is replenished and returns to its former level. The openings 11 operate beneficially to increase the efficiency, as the upper ones constitute air-vents enabling an influx of air to the upper portion of the cuspidor. In this way any tendency to checking which might be exerted by the rarefioation of the air in the cuspidor would be overcome.
The device is evidently very sanitary and admirably fulfills the purposes of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A closet-bowl comprising a water-basin with a cuspidor communicating therewith below the water-level of said basin, and a cover seated on said cuspidor, said cuspidorhaving an air-vent above the water-level therein.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
AMBROSE WM. HOWE.
